26、 Louise Blanchard Bethune showed early promise in math. But Louise did not go to school. Instead, her father taught her at home until she was 11 years old. She also discovered a skill for planning houses. It developed into a lifelong interest in architecture and a place in history as the first professional female architect in the United States.
After graduating from high school in 1874, Louise traveled and studied. She hoped to prepare herself to attend the new architecture school at Cornell University. But then Buffalo's leading architectural firm of Richard A. Waite and F. W. Caulkins offered her job. She knew that architects gained their training from practical experience, not from school. She took the job.
Louise worked there as an assistant, 10 hours a day for five years. She learned and mastered the drawing and architectural design. She also met her husband, Robert A. Bethune. Their new firm, R.A. and L. Bethune, opened in October 1881.
Bethune appeared to be the strength of the business. At the turn of the 20th century, the city of Buffalo was rapidly expanding to meet the demands of growing industry. The firm received tasks to build hundreds of structures throughout western New York. The firm designed lots of schools, apartment buildings, department stores, churches and factories.
Bethune believed that being an architect meant being an artist, a scientist and a business person. She made a point of advocating for women in the profession. She became a member of the Western Association of Architects (WAA) in 1885. In 1888, she was the first woman to join the American Institute of Architects (AIA). Besides, Bethune took a firm stand on equal treatment for women architects. She insisted on equal pay for equal work.

27、I was lucky enough to have a chance to study in the United States as an international student from Ukraine when I was fourteen years old. I went to a wonderful school, West Seattle High School, for my freshman year.
I remember my first day at that school as if it were yesterday. I was very nervous, and I could feel my heartbeat on the tips of my toes. My main fear was that I would not be able to express myself due to the language barrier (语言障碍). I was trying to have as little communication as I possibly could. And I almost succeeded, until we had to introduce ourselves in front of the class.
And the moment the word “international” flew out of my mouth, I was surrounded by thirty people who were asking questions one after another. I remember some of the questions were “Where is Ukraine? Is it a kingdom?” “Do you have McDonald’s? Does it taste the same?” and “Say something in your language”. It turned out to be the opposite of less communication, but it was so much fun.
During the first three months, I certainly experienced a bit of cultural shock. I think Americans are the nicest people I have ever met in my entire life. They always smile and say, “Hi, how are you?”
One day, I noticed the students looking at me suspiciously. Finally, my classmate came up to my locker and whispered, “Is that true that you are a princess and that you came to study here so that nobody would recognize you?” At one point, I even had an image of myself wearing a gown (长袍) and waving at the crowd. What? People do have a wild imagination! During my study abroad experience, I saw a totally new world, experienced great culture, met a lot of incredible people and improved my language. This trip inspired me to learn foreign languages. That is one of the reasons why I speak five different languages today.

28、Maggie Perkins had been working as a teacher in Georgia for nearly five years before she decided to “quietly quit” her job. The decision didn’t mean leaving her position, but rather limiting her work to her contract(合同) hours, nothing more and nothing less.
Perkins joins a larger online community of workers who have been sharing their experiences on TikTok. But as “quiet quitters” defend their choice to take a step back from work, company managers and workplace experts argue that although doing less might feel good in the short term, it could harm their career and their company in the long run.
In the wake of the global pandemic and the following Great Resignation, employees began to reimagine what work could look like. Gallup’s State of the Global Workplace report in June found job dissatisfaction being at an all-time high. Disengaged(工作不投入的) workers cost the global economy about $7.8 trillion in lost productivity.
But with worries of an economic slowdown, and falling worker productivity, Johnny C. Taylor Jr., president and CEO of the Society for Human Resource Management, warns that anyone who tells their business leader they are a quiet quitter is likely not to have a job for very long. He says companies have become sensitive to worker burnout, especially for employees who are working from home.
Gergo Vari, CEO of the job board Lensa, suggests another choice for quiet quitting: “loudly persisting(坚持)” . That is, allowing employees to speak up about how their organization can serve their goals. “When you loudly persist, you have a sense of belonging and have a share in where the company is going,” he says.
Career coach Allison Peck says she views “quiet quitting” as a sign of employees not connecting to their work or managers. Her career advice for quiet quitters is to take even braver action. “Finding a new job, manager, team, or company that better fits you can improve your attitude towards work,” she says.
【1】What will “quiet quitters” do in real life?
A.They quit their jobs.
B.They work part-time.
C.They hate their jobs.
D.They refuse extra work.
【2】What consequence will “quiet quitters” bring?
A.A global economic loss.
B.Less competition at work.
C.Conflicts between colleagues.
D.A shortage of labor on the market.
【3】In Johnny’s view, who do companies care about more regarding worker burnout?
A.Those working at home.
B.Those taking several jobs.
C.Those just returning to offices.
D.Those sticking to their duties.
【4】Instead of quiet quitting, what should employees do according to Gergo Vari?
A.Find a more suitable job.
B.Improve their work efficiency.
C.Get along with their colleagues.
D.Speak up about their demand for the company.
29、 Would you give your Social Security (安全) Number to the worker at the supermarket? Of course not, right? Yet, if you're like most people, you wouldn't hesitate to give out a different, but equally important number to the same person.
Experts now say that your cellphone number may be more pivotal than any other personal information in the eyes of spammers(垃圾邮件发送者) and identity thieves. In other words, you should guard that cellphone number with your life.
Today, your cellphone number will likely be with you for a very long time. That means if spammers get your cellphone number, it will be much harder to get rid of them. It also means that over the years, your cellphone number will be linked to a lot of personal information from contact lists to bank card numbers, all information that hackers would love to get their hands on.
A few years ago, German security researcher Karsten Nohl showed what he could get using only a person's cellphone number. Califomia Congressman(国会议员) Ted Lieu was given a new cellphone for a day and Nohl was given that cellphone number. Using just that number, Nohl was able to find Lieu's location and movements throughout Los Angeles, read his emails and text messages, and record phone calls between Lieu and his team. And Nohl did all of this from his office in Berlin using just a cellphone number.
Still think it's a good idea to post your number on the Internet?
When you sign up for an account(账户)online, you usually provide your email address and a password. But if you forget that password, many of these companies will send you a password retrieval code(检索码)to your cellphone. Let's say you post something for sale online and you include your name, email, and cellphone number. You've now given a potential(潜在的))thief everything he needs to hack into any of your online accounts. Therefore, it just makes sense to protect yourself by guarding that number as closely as you would guard any other personal information.
【1】What does the underlined word "pivotal" in Paragraph 2 most probably mean?
A.Accessible B.Familiar
C.Important D.Manageable.
【2】What does the third paragraph mainly talk about?
A.Why people should protect their cellphone numbers.
B.Why people seldom change their numbers.
C.How to protect our personal information.
D.How to get rid of spammers.
【3】What did Karsten Nohl's show intend to prove?
A.Nohl is a real expert in hacking.
B.It's necessary to fight against hackers.
C.Lieu's new cellphone has powerful functions.
D.It's easy to hack information through cellphone numbers.
【4】What can we infer from the last paragraph?
A.It's a good idea to sell something online.
B.It's necessary to register several accounts online.
C.It's common for people to forget their passwords.
D.It's risky to post your cellphone number online.

31、Directions: Complete the following passage by using the words in the box. Each word can only be used once. Note that there is one word more than you need.
Many trees and shrubs change color in fall. For years, scientists have worked hard to understand the changes that happen to them. They find that three factors 【1】 fall's colorful farewell — leaf pigments (色素), length of night, and weather. The timing of the color change is mainly regulated by the increasing length of night. None of the other 【2】influences, such as temperature, rainfall, food supply, are as unchanging as the 【3】increasing length of night during fall. As days grow shorter, and nights grow longer and cooler, biochemical 【4】 in leaves begin to paint the landscape with an explosion of colors. And Nature puts on one of its most splendid 【5】 of beauty.
The timing of the color change【6】 by species. Some species in southern forests can become vividly colorful in late summer while all other species are still vigorously green. Oaks put on their colors long after other species have already shed their leaves. These differences in timing among species seem to be genetically 【7】, for a particular species, whether on a high mountain or in warmer lowlands, will change color at the same time.
However, some species are evergreen. Pines, for example, are green all the year round because they have toughened up. They have developed over the years a needle-like or scale-like foliage (绿叶植物), which is【8】 with a heavy wax coating. And the liquid inside their cells contains cold-resistant elements. So the leaves of evergreens can safely withstand (经受住) all but the most 【9】winter conditions, such as those in the Arctic.
