  • 26、Lizzie’s diary from Antarctica (南极洲)

    Day 3: Tuesday December 2

We planned to go to Rothera that morning. We’d be staying there for the next two weeks. Because Antarctica is the windiest place on earth, sometimes you can’t fly at all.

We had a nervous wait over breakfast to find out if we’d be leaving that day. People have to stay in Stanley for weeks while the pilots wait for good weather.

It turned clear at 9:30 and we took off at 10:30 on a little red plane called a Dash-7. But even when we were in the air, there was still a chance we wouldn’t be able to fly the whole day.

    Day 4: Wednesday December 3

After waking up in the Antarctic for the first time today I can understand why everybody who comes here falls in love with the place. It is really beautiful.

We’re staying at Rothera Survey base with mountains of ice all around. It is about minus 20C today, which for me is very cold, but the regulars(常客) here are often seen walking around in T-shirts !

    Day 5: Thursday December 4

I woke up to another beautiful sunny day here in the Antarctic. I’m told it’s a bit colder today, about minus 50C , but it’s not very windy so it feels warmer. Those of us who are new to the base have to do a special training course before we're allowed to go off base to other stations or to go snowboarding over the nearby hill.

    Day 7:  Saturday December 6

Not a cloud in the sky and it’s warm enough to sit outside (in a jacket).

The most amazing thing about this place is how the scenery (风景) changes every day.

At first I thought I was going mad. I’d step outside in the morning and think, “I’m sure that big mountain of ice wasn’t there yesterday.” It’s because the sea ice is always moving—slowly thankfully !

1Lizzie sat outside wearing a jacket on_______.

    A. Tuesday B. Wednesday

    C. Thursday D. Saturday

2What could stop Lizzie from leaving Stanley for Rothera?

    A. Strong winds. B. Thick clouds.

    C. Mountains of ice. D. Low temperatures.

3How did Lizzie feel during her stay in the Antarctic?

    A. Afraid. B. Nervous.

    C. Amazed. D. Bored.

4Rothera was unforgettable to me because _______.

    A. people walked around in T-shirts B. there was a special training course

    C. the weather was sometimes warm D. the scenery changed every day

  • 27、If you are a fruit grower — or would like to become one —join in Apple Day to see what’s around. It’s called Apple Day but in fact it’s more like Apple Month. The day itself is on October 21, but since it has become popular, events now last through most of October around Britain.

Visiting an apple event is a good chance to see, and often taste, a wide variety(品种) of apples. To people who are used to the limited kinds of apples such as Golden Delicious and Royal Gala in supermarkets, it can be quite eye-opening to see some classical apples still in existence, such as Decio which was grown by the Romans. Although it doesn’t taste of anything special, it’s still worth a try.

There are also varieties developed to suit certain local conditions. One of the very best varieties for eating quality is Orleans Reinette, but you’ll need a warm, sheltered place with perfect soil to grow it, so it’s a pipe dream for most apple lovers who fall in love with it.

At the apple events, you can also meet expert growers and discuss which ones will best suit your conditions, and because these are family affairs, children are well entertained with apple-themed fun and games.

Apple days are being held at all sorts of places with an interest in fruit, including stately gardens and commercial orchards(果园). If you want to have a real orchard experience, visit the National Collection at Brogdale, near Faversham in Kent.

【1】What can people do at the apple events?

    A. Attend experts’ lectures.

    B. Visit fruit-loving families.

    C. Taste many kinds of apples.

    D. Plant fruit trees in an orchard.

【2】What can we learn about Decio?

    A. It is a new variety.

    B. It is rarely seen now.

    C. It has a strange look.

    D. It has a special taste.

【3】What does the underlined phrase “a pipe dream” in Paragraph 3 mean?

    A. A clever idea. B. A selfish thought.

    C. A great plan.   D. A useless hope.

四、短文填空 (共1题,共 5分)
  • 31、Directions: Complete the following passage by using the words in the box. Each word can only be used once. Note that there is one word more than you need.

It is not unusual for us to gather with our nearest and dearest on the weekends. But do you know that holidays, much like relationships, can be “made, 1 and broken” through conversations? Deborag Tannen, a Georgetown University linguistics(语言学)professor, believes so. She offers suggestions to improve communication at the holiday table and beyond. Let’s take a look.

A round dining table is best for 2 a lively conversation because everyone faces one another.

Avoid 3 grandparents at the ends of a rectangular table, even though it is the traditional place of honor. Elderly people may feel lonely there because they will be 4 to hear or keep up with a conversation.

Women prefer to face each other and make eye contact when they talk. Men might look around at other things. “Guys may be more relaxed keeping staring on the TV,” says Tannen. “They’ll still be 5, though.”

Be 6 that people have different ways of talking. Each person has a different sense of tone, rhythm, timing and how long of a pause is normal in a conversation. Pay attention to people who seem left out. If you feel you are doing all the talking, hold back to give others a chance to join in. If you feel you aren’t getting a chance to speak, try pushing yourself to start talking before it seems natural or 7.

Some families find that gatherings go more 8 if they participate in an outdoor activity. Going to a park for a walk may be more 9 than sitting around chatting.

五、书面表达 (共1题,共 5分)
  • 32、阅读下面材料, 根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段, 使之构成一篇完整的短文。

    My Best Teaching Experience

Tyler was only in my senior class for a semester. He had been suspended (使停学) many times in previous years because of his anger issues. When he entered my class, I thought the worst.

Tyler sat in the back row. Every time I talked to the class, I would ask students questions, calling them by name. Unfortunately, every time I called on Tyler, he would respond with a joke. If he got an answer wrong, he would become angry.

About a month into the year, I was still trying to connect with Tyler. I can usually get students involved in class discussions or at least have them sit quietly and attentively (专心地). By contrast, Tyler was often loud and sometimes rude.

He had been in so much trouble over the years. He expected his teachers to know about his past;about how many times he had been sent to the office or suspended from school. I had found that these sorts of referrals (移交) were not very effective and that students would return from the office behaving worse than before.

One day, Tyler was talking over me while I was teaching. I stopped my lesson and said, “Tyler, why don’t you join in our discussion instead of having one of your own?” With that, he got up from his chair, pushed it over and yelled something. I can’t remember what he said other than that he included some impolite words. I sent Tyler straight to the office, and he received a week’s suspension.

To this point, this was one of my worst teaching experiences. Tyler’s anger was almost too much for me. The week Tyler was suspended from school was a wonderful time, and we got a lot accomplished as a class. However, the suspension week would soon come to an end, and I was fearful of his return.

    续写要求:

    1. 续写词数应为 150 左右;

    2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。

On the day of Tyler’s return, I stood at the door awaiting him.
