26、Every year, hundreds of hopeful students arrive in Washington, D. C., in order to compete in the National Spelling Bee, which has been held every year since 1925.
In the competition, students under 16 take turns trying to properly spell words. The champion is the only remaining student who does not make a mistake. American students are familiar with the competition because it is practiced in many schools throughout the country. The National Spelling Bee, however, is a much bigger setting and showcases only the best spellers from all parts of the nation. Winning the competition nowadays requires the ability to perform under much pressure against so many talented students in front of a large audience. A student who wins the event in the twenty-first century will experience a much different challenge than the first winner, Frank Neuhauser, did in 1925 when he defeated only nine other competitors.
Clearly, the 90 years of the National Spelling Bee’s existence proves the importance of spelling in the English language. However, struggles with spelling English words go back much more than 90 years. The charming thing about spelling correctly in English is that it is in many ways without rules. English language can absorb new words from other languages and in doing so make them “English” words. Because of this, the number of words in English is much higher than any other languages. Thus, spelling in many other languages has fewer words and fewer strange exceptions to rules. It turns out that a spelling bee in most other languages would be a waste of time. Why is that? Well, without so many exceptions to common vocabulary, there would be very few words that everyone didn’t already know.
【1】How is today’s competition different from the first National Spelling Bee?
A.It produces more winners.
B.It draws more talented audience.
C.It attracts more competitors.
D.It tests more strange words.
【2】Why does the author mention “other languages” in Paragraph 3?
A.To introduce the new rules of the competition.
B.To gather students from other countries.
C.To explain the difficulty in English spelling.
D.To show the strict rules of written English.
【3】What’s the author’s attitude toward holding spelling competitions in most other languages?
A.Unfavorable.
B.Supportive.
C.Responsible.
D.Doubtful.
【4】What does the text mainly talk about?
A.Ways to win a Spelling Bee.
B.The most difficult language.
C.The best spellers.
D.A competition about spelling.
27、People will say firmly their childhood memory is real, offering amazing detail as proof that it must be, and getting upset if you suggest they are wrong.
But, for years, scientists have questioned whether these memories could actually be true, given what we know about neuroscience (神经科学) and the brain. The human brain grows and develops in clear stages. As it grows and creates and adapts, so different developmental stages are reached. These stages are the result of millions of years of evolution (进化). Now, finally, a study has proved this. Researchers from Memorial University in Newfoundland, Canada, reviewed decades worth of data to understand the earliest age at which lasting memories form and they have believed that it is around 30 months.
So people who think they remember something from when they were a baby are, I am afraid, mistaken. The problem with early memories is that they are very easy to fabricate, which is what I did.
I have a vivid image of standing in the garden, my mum holding a flower and laughing. It’s one of my first memories. I must have been 18 months old because we moved from that house before I was two. I could swear it was real.
Years ago, when I shared this memory with my mum, she shook her head and produced a photo. It showed her in a garden, laughing and holding a flower. But it was taken three years before I was born. That beautiful memory is a work of fiction (虚构): an old photo that used to hang on the wall.
I’ll admit to feeling shocked and robbed when I realized this memory was entirely false. It made me question other things I remember as a child, too. A study into this event published a few years ago found that around 40 per cent of us say that we have memories from before the age of two. But it’s the mind playing tricks on us taking old stories or photos and turning them into a memory.
While it can be disappointing to realize that a recollection you hold so dear might not be true, it does provide a good lesson in how changeable memory can be.

B.When he is two years old.

B.To attract readers’ attention.
C.To show off his good memory.

A.A study published a few years ago proved false.

29、Nonprofits usually try to give donors a simple message: Donate $50 now to help someone in poverty. But how does your donation get to the person in need? And how do these international nonprofits actually operate?
Nonprofits are usually headquartered in the USA or Europe. Many of them have “field offices” in the under-developed countries where they work. These offices often employ locals or nationals understanding the language and culture. Larger nonprofits sometimes create local affiliates (分支). So when you donate to World Vision, for example, your gift may get passed on to World Vision Kenya, a semi-independent organization.
Other international nonprofits partner with local organizations, which are smaller nonprofits started by people in poorer countries so they could help people in their own communities. Here’s how the partnership usually works: the international nonprofit asks for donations and then passes them on to the local partners. I work for an international nonprofit called West African Vocational Schools (WAVS) and we partner with a local organization called Ponte da Vida.
International nonprofits know that many donors like to support children in poverty, so child sponsorship programs are a popular way to raise funds. But how those donations are actually used varies. World Vision, for example, uses child sponsorship funds to help everyone in a community. Usually, these are communities where most people are living in poverty. World Vision has learned the hard way that giving special treatment to one child isn’t a sustainable way to help people in poverty. Besides, it often has unintended consequences: children who don’t get free stuff feel jealous (嫉妒的).
WAVS has a different model. We encourage our donors to join One Student, a community of monthly givers who help equip young people in West Africa with life-changing job skills. They usually give $40/month because that’s how much it takes to cover the cost of training one student for one month. The donations are sent to Ponte da Vida, which uses the funds to operate WAVS vocational schools in West Africa.
Still have questions? Feel free to email me.
【1】What can we learn about World Vision?
A.It is a partly independent organization.
B.It has branches in many countries.
C.It partners with WAVS.
D.It is based in Kenya.
【2】What does World Vision think of treating poor kids specially?
A.It causes negative effects.
B.It is helpful and effective.
C.It costs higher than expected.
D.It should have an age restriction.
【3】What is the duty of One Student members?
A.Operating vocational schools in West Africa.
B.Teaching children life-changing job skills.
C.Contributing money to WAVS regularly.
D.Seeking partnership with Ponte da Vida.
【4】What is the purpose of this text?
A.To call for donations.
B.To explain how nonprofits work.
C.To show how kids in need receive donations.
D.To recommend some nonprofits to volunteers.
