  • 26、Cloning: Where Is It Leading Us?

When it was announced in 2018 that the Chinese Academy of Sciences in Shanghai had created the world’s first cloned monkeys, Zhongzhong and Huahua, heated discussions followed online. In fact, cloning has always been with us. It is a way of making an exact copy of another animal or plant. It happens in plants when gardeners take cutting from growing plants to make new ones. It also happens in animals when identical twins are produced from the same egg. These are both examples of natural clones.

Cloning has two major uses. First, gardeners use it to produce large quantities of plants for sale. Second, it is valuable for research on the new plant species and for medical research on animals. Cloning plants is fairly straightforward, while cloning animals is much more complicated and difficult. Over the years, many scientists failed in their attempts to clone animals, but their determination and patience paid off in 1996 with a breakthrough - the cloning of a Dolly the sheep.

With the advances of scientific research, cloning will have several major uses in the future. For one thing, it could be used to breed animal species which are endangered, or even bring back species which are now extinct. For another, it could be used to grow human organs or tissue in animals, which could be used for human organ transplants or medical treatments. Finally, cloning could be used to breed animals that will provide us with higher quality meat, milk, or eggs.

While there are technical issues that need to be worked through to make widespread cloning possible, the biggest issue concerns our moral. For example, if scientists brought an extinct animal back into existence, it would be probably end up living in a zoo. That is not very good for the animal. Even worse for the animal is using it as a source of organ transplants - because it will be injured or even die. In addition, many people worry that eating animal products that result from cloning might be harmful to our health over time. The possibility of using cloning to produce human beings is an even bigger concern. What would happen if such knowledge ended up in the wrong hands?

When it comes to cloning, we wonder, ultimately, whether cloning will help or harm the world. No doubt, we will be talking about this question for a long time to come.

【1】What does the underlined word “straightforward” in Paragraph 2 probably mean?

    A.Frank.

    B.Harmful.

    C.Simple.

    D.Useful.

【2】What’s the writer’s attitude towards cloning?

    A.Supportive.

    B.Negative.

    C.Positive.

    D.Objective.

【3】What can we learn from this passage?

A.Cloning might result in eating animal products.

B.Cloning could be used for medical treatments.

C.Cloning has been largely used to produce human beings.

D.Cloning may lead to the destruction of the balance of nature.

  • 27、   The traditional tent cities at festivals such as Glastonbury may never be the same again. In a victory of green business that is certain to appeal to environmentally-aware music-lovers, a design student is to receive financial support to produce eco-friendly tents made of cardboard that can be recycled after the bands and the crowds have gone home.

Major festivals such as Glastonbury throw away some 10,000 abandoned tents at the end of events each year. For his final year project at the University of the West of England, James Dunlop came up with a material that can be recycled. And to cope with the British summer, the cardboard has been made waterproof.

Taking inspiration from a Japanese architect, who has used cardboard to make big buildings including churches, Mr. Dunlop used cardboard material for his tents, which he called Myhabs.

The design won an award at the annual New Designers Exhibition after Mr. Dunlop graduated from his product design degree and he decided to try to turn it into a business.

To raise money for the idea, he toured the city's private companies which fund new business and found a supporter in the finance group Mint. He introduced his idea to four of Mint's directors and won their support. Mint has committed around £ 500,000 to Myhabs and taken a share of 30 percent in Mr. Dunlop's business. The first Myhabs should be tested at festivals this summer, before being marketed fully next year.

Mr. Dunlop said that the design, which accommodates two people, could have other uses, such as for disaster relief and housing for the London Olympics.

For music events, the cardboard houses will be ordered online and put up at the sites by the Myhabs team before the festivalgoers arrive and removed by the company afterwards. They can be personalized and the company will offer reductions on the expense if people agree to sell exterior advertising space.

The biggest festivals attract tens of thousands of participants, with Glastonbury having some 150,000 each year. Altogether there are around 100 annual music festivals where people camp in the UK. The events are becoming increasingly environmentally conscious.

【3】It is implied in the passage that ________.

B.most performances at British festivals are given in the open air

C.the cardboard tents produced by Mr. Dunlop can be user-tailored

D.cardboard tents can be easily put up and removed by users

  • 28、We went to the T. B. Blackstone Library, not far from Lake Michigan. You could easily miss the building if you didn’t know what you were looking for. But once you were inside, you could never mistake it for anything else. We passed through two sets of heavy brass doors to the lobby of the library. And if we turned right then, we could see an alcove with tables; this led, in turn, to a big reading room with a gigantic and ancient globe that sat in front of the largest windows. I liked to look at Africa, with the coded colours of the different countries like the Belgian Congo and Rhodesia, and try to remember which countries were fighting to be free just as we were struggling for civil rights. I had heard Daddy talking about the struggle, arguing with the television as someone discussed it on a news show.

One Saturday, as I wandered through the young adult section, I saw a title: Little Women, by Louisa May Alcott. I could tell from looking at the shelf that she'd written a lot of books, but I didn't know anything about her. I had learned from experience that titles weren't everything. A book that sounded great on the shelf could be dull once you got it home, and every bad book I brought home meant one less book to read until we went back in two weeks. So I sat in a chair near the shelves to skim the first paragraphs:

"Christmas won't be Christmas without any presents," grumbled Jo, lying on the rug.

"It’s so dreadful to be poor!" sighed Meg, looking down at her old dress.

"I don't think it’s fair for some girls to have plenty of pretty things, and other girls nothing at all," added little Amy, with an injured sniff.

"We’ve got Father and Mother and each other," said Beth contentedly from her corner.

It was a good thing I’d already decided on some other books to take home, because I didn’t look through the rest of the section that day. I read and read and read Little Women until it was time to walk home, and, except for a few essential interruptions like sleeping and eating, I would not put it down until the end. Even the freedom to watch weekend television held no appeal for me in the wake of Alcott’s story. It was about girls, for one thing, girls who could almost be like me, especially Jo. It seemed to me a shame that she wasn't Black; then our similarity would be complete. She loved to read, she loved to make up plays, she hated acting ladylike, and she had a dreadful temper. I had found a kindred spirit.

  • 29、When should a child begin to take music lessons? To answer this question, it’s important to look at the reasons why a parent might want their child to take music lessons.

There is a growing body of research that shows a “window of opportunity” from birth to age nine for developing a musical sensibility within children. During this time, the mental structures and mechanisms(机制) associated with processing and understanding music are in the best stages of development. And that is why it is important to expose children in this age range to music.

The important question then is not when to start lessons, but the goal of music lessons for young children. For example, very young children are exposed to instruments not to master them, but to gain experience and learn to develop meaningful relationships with music. If this is your goal, then the “lessons“ can and should start soon after birth and certainly within the child’s first year. These “lessons” do not have to be-in fact, at first probably shouldn’t be very formal.

Once the child is around age three, it may be time for more formalized “lessons”. Again, the goal is not to learn to play an instrument but to further develop skills like identifying(识别) a beat in music, identifying melody, or identifying instruments.

By age five, most children have built a foundation that has prepared them for formalized music lessons. Even now, the goal of the lessons is not to become a great performer on the instrument but the same as when they play music at three. Piano and violin are the two most common instruments played at his age, but others have tried the recorder, guitar, or ukulele with success.

By age ten, the child will have a variety of skills associated with their instrument of choice. They’ll also have the physical strength to try a different, bigger instrument that requires a higher level of strength and determination. Around this time, the goal of lessons properly changes from gaining experience with music to improving performance ability.

【1】Why does the author mention the research finding in Paragraph 2?

A.To tell us how to develop a musical sensibility.

B.To explain the phrase “window of opportunity”.

C.To inform a new finding in the field of child development.

D.To show the importance of experiencing music at a young age.

【2】What goal is suitable for a three-year-old child taking music lessons?

A.To learn to play an instrument.

B.To just have some fun with others.

    C.To recognize different musical instruments

D.To become a great performer on an instrument.

【3】When should a child start focusing on improving performance ability while learning music?

    A.At the age of 1.

    B.At the age of 3.

    C.At the age of 5.

    D.At the age of 10.

【4】What is the text mainly about?

A.The reasons to take music lessons.

B.The right age to begin music lessons.

C.The importance of formal music education.

D.The best way to learn a musical instrument.
