26、Technology is changing our lives. Our present aerospace (航天航空)companies are gradually disappearing as private space concerns are being born every day. I'm going to discuss three spacebased businesses that are sure to soon influence us all.
First we have to make space travel cheaply and safely. Engine design is the main challenge. To make money in space, the cost of space travel will have to diminish(减少). This problem will be the most difficult to solve. Liquid fueled rockets are the only way to get out of Earth's orbit. Finding new ways to power the flight to space is also another big challenge.
Finding the key to cheap space travel might be the biggest story of our times. There are a lot of great minds working on this problem. And companies are pouring money into research and development. In the next few years we'll see the first suborbital tourist. And not long after that we should really start to see new and exciting things as competition heats up.
Spacecraft design and production will naturally follow rocket technology. All sorts of crafts will be needed for the wide uses they'll be tasked with. Several companies in the United States have already made small, lowcost test vehicles.
Resources in space will provide great mining profits to those who can afford the cost of setting up such a huge operation. Can you imagine finding a huge asteroid(小行星) of pure gold? The benefit to mankind is limitless. Mining on other planets, like Mars, also adds CO2 into the very thin atmosphere. Over time this can lead to the formation of an atmosphere similar to Earth's.
Space is going to offer us untold opportunity and wealth. But this is only going to occur if wealthy investors step forward and fund the first steps forward. It is certain that technology will take us to worlds we could never have imagined.
【1】The passage is mainly about ________.
A.the future of space travel
B.the cost of space travel in the future
C.the development of spacecrafts
D.cheap travel in the future
【2】What should be done first to make travel in space cheap and safe?
A.A direct route from Earth to other stars should be found.
B.Some new kinds of fuel should be used in the rockets.
C.New material should be used to build the rockets.
D.New rocket engines should be designed.
【3】According to the passage mining on other planets might help ________.
A.increase the travel benefits there
B.form the atmosphere like Earth's there
C.bring some new species there
D.create more job opportunities there
【4】According to the passage, the spacebased businesses are ________.
A.likely B.imaginary

27、Is there anybody out there? For centuries humans have wondered, although the ways in which we have gone about this have varied. As we have gained a greater understanding of the universe, our searches have taken on more concrete forms. Questions about aliens(外星人) have become a subject for science rather than science fiction.
Now new cooperation between the Very Large Array (VLA) observatory in New Mexico and the SETI Institute in California means that our curiosity about aliens can be closer than ever before to being satisfied. Data from the VLA’s 28 radio telescopes, used to scan a vast area of sky, will be fed through a special supercomputer that will search for distant signals.
How likely it is that a signal will be found, and what this might mean, are hard questions to answer. SETI’s existing projects have not detected any signals from other planets so far. But recent discoveries in space and Earth sciences have provided some encouragement for those who are enthusiastic about the possibility, however remote, of detecting other civilizations.
Once it was thought that our solar system could be unique. Since the discovery of the first exoplanet (a planet beyond the solar system) in the 1990s, thousands more have been located. Around one in five stars is now thought to have a planet in their orbit in a so-called ”habitable(适合居住的) zone”— that is, at a distance from the star where the temperature means that life is theoretically possible.
Are Earth’s 7.5 billion humans, along with billions of other animals and plants they share their home with, on their own in the universe? If there is another life form somewhere, could it be as intelligent as humans? Or could it threaten them? I think all of these need further exploration. As explorations of Mars continue, and a new set of observations from the James Webb Space Telescope are set to begin, our interest in the possibility of alien life appears as much as before.
【1】Why does the VLA work with SETI?
A.To develop new radio telescopes.
B.To satisfy some people’s curiosity.
C.To build a special supercomputer.
D.To find evidence of aliens’ existence.
【2】What is the encouraging news for scientists exploring distant civilizations?
A.Some exoplanets may have habitable zones.
B.New technologies are adopted to find aliens.
C.Signals have been detected from other planets.
D.Life does indeed exist on exoplanets.
【3】What is the author’s attitude to the existence of aliens?
A.Positive.
B.Uncertain.
C.Worried.
D.Unacceptable.

28、How to Keep a Relationship Healthy and Strong
Are you new to experiencing relationships? Well, let me give you advice on having a healthy and possibly long-term relationship.
Be honest with them. 【1】 Getting them to believe in you is the most important element in any relationship. So please be honest and they'll learn to trust you.
Make sure you give them respect. Now respect isn't just simply treating her or him nicely. There's a lot more to it. You have to learn to adjust to their liking. 【2】 Don't just think about yourself.
【3】 Always be willing to help them and give them honesty and positiveness at the same time. Make them feel you are someone they can really count on and build a future with. This is an important step in a relationship. Your partners should be able to depend on you when you are needed.
Make sure you have a good sense of humor with them. Laughter is the key to happiness. Laugh a lot with them, and joke with them. Laughter may seem silly, but it's the secret to a lot in life. 【4】
Make sure the communication is good. This goes along with trust, but always communicate how you feel, even if it's something that upsets you. Instead of screaming, talk to them. 【5】 It's important to communicate this to them, not to keep it bottled up.
A.Show them your personality.
B.Don't hide things from them and don't lie.
C.Make sure you are helpful to your partners.
D.Laughter keeps the relationship strong and long-lasting.
E.Don't start to neglect them and make them feel unwanted.
F.Basically, learn to understand your partners' moods, wants and needs.
G.If they did something that made you unhappy, tell them about it in an acceptable way.
29、 Do you think Great Britain and the United States are alike? Winston Churchill once joked that the people of Britain and the people of America are separated(分离) only by their language. Do you think that is true? The British and the Americans both speak English as the official language. However, each uses some different words. We Americans are similar to the British. After all, our country was once owned by Great Britain, so we have a lot in common. But there are many differences between us.
Great Britain has a king or queen, and the leader of the government is the Prime Minister. The United States has no kings or queens. Our leader is the President.
Both the British and Americans use pounds and ounces, pints, quarts, and gallons. Both use miles, yards and feet. Our money is different, though. The British use pounds and pence. Americans use dollars and cents.
Driving in a car is very different in England. They drive on the left side of the road. We drive on the right. What we call the hood of the car, the British call the “bonnet”. British cars run on “petrol”, which we call gasoline.
In our everyday lives, we do many of the same things as the British. But we describe them differently. A young mother here might push a baby in a baby carriage. A British mom pushes a “pram”. The British watch the “telly”, while we watch TV. We like to eat French fries, but the British call them “chips”. Millions of Americans drink coffee, but most British prefer tea.
So we are different in many ways. But we stay friendly anyway.
