26、 A new study has found that ride-sharing services result in much more pollution than other kinds of private and public transportation. Ride-sharing trips also draw passengers away from more environment friendly methods of travel, like public transportation, walking or biking, the study found.
Several studies in recent years have suggested that ride-sharing services like Uber and Lyft can worsen traffic problems in cities. The new study represents an attempt to center on how ride-sharing services affect pollution. Overall, the researchers reported that ride-sharing trips now "result in a 69 percent more climate pollution on average than the trips they replace." The study notes that the same passengers could have chosen to travel by bus, train, bike or on foot.
One of the big reasons they give for this result is that ride-sharing vehicles are often driven with no passengers in the car. This happens when drivers are either waiting for rider requests or on the way to pick up passengers. This situation, known as "deadheading", takes up about 42 percent of all ride-sharing driving activity, the study found. The researchers said that deadheading results in about 50 percent more carbon dioxide than one person driving in a private vehicle. Both Uber and Lyft have said in the past that most studies on the subject overstate (夸大)the effects of their services on pollution. Uber told Reuters news agency in a statement it had no comment on the latest report and that the study made misleading claims about ride-sharing. Meanwhile, the company said it would work directly with cities to address climate changes, promoting sharing trips and other means of transportation.

D.the new report has forced Uber to make big changes to achieve its goal
27、Crossing your legs is an extremely common habit. While you may find it comfortable to sit with one knee crossed over the other, it might be causing health problems that you are not aware of.
A study published in Blood Pressure Monitoring stated that sitting with your legs crossed can increase your blood pressure. The reason this happens is because the blood in your legs has to work against gravity to be pumped back to your heart, crossing one leg over the other increases resistance, making it even harder for the blood to circulate. You won’t feel any immediate effects, but sitting for long periods of time will hurt you forever.
Crossing your legs can also lead to neck and back pain. Ideally, it’s best for our bodies to sit with our feet planted flat, hip width apart, on the floor, but it’s not easy to maintain perfect posture all day at the office. When you sit with your legs crossed your hips are in a twisted position, which can cause one of your pelvic bones(骨盆) to rotate. Since your pelvic bone supports your neck and spine(脊椎), this can cause pressure on your lower and middle back and neck.
You also might notice that when you sit with your legs crossed for long periods of time your feet and legs get painful or have the feeling of being asleep. This is because when one leg sits on top of the other it causes pressure on the veins(静脉) and nerves in your legs and feet. It can cause numbness and/or temporary paralysis in the legs, ankles, or feet. While the feeling of discomfort may only last a minute or two, repeatedly crossing your legs until they feel numb can cause permanent nerve damage.
So next time you sit down, try to get yourself in the habit of sitting with both of your feet on the floor. Not only will it help your posture and stability, but it will also save your health in the long run.
【1】Which of the following is not the consequence of crossing legs?
A.Neck and back get hurt.

D.Pelvic bones keep perfect postures.

29、This fall, Chinese students under compulsory education (义务教育) have welcomed the double reduction policy, which helps to reduce homework and out-school training. But how do students like to spend their time after school? Let’s look at homework around the world.
New Zealand
Before high school, teachers in New Zealand test their students to learn their level and arrange different teaching tasks. The school will give out a report on each student’s reading, writing, mathematics, science, art and sports at mid-year and end-of-year.
In senior high school, students’ homework and exams greatly increase. But they can select courses according to their personal interests and future career plan.
Japan
For students in Japanese primary and secondary schools, there are two types of homework: developing their living skills and getting knowledge in the classroom. And for high school students, many need to translate one page of English into Japanese every day and read it aloud, write 200 Chinese characters and do math exercises. Some schools allow students to go to tutoring schools to help them get admitted by their favorite universities.
The Netherlands
Dutch students under the age of 10ceive very lite, if any, homework, which gives them time for daily exercise. As for middle school students, teachers never spend time teaching the textbooks, and generally guide students to discuss related topics. “Besides learning, the most important task for middle school students is to have a clearer understanding of their abilities and interests, improve their social skills and have a basic plan for their future.” said Arie Slob, Minister for Primary and Secondary Education in the Netherlands.

32、阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
The house next door had been empty for more than a year. Then one day, workmen arrived and started to clean and paint the place. My siblings (兄弟姐妹) and I were curious about who would be moving in. We did not have long to wait. A week after the house was prepared, a truck arrived. We watched with interest as the movers carried the furniture into the house. The furniture looked expensive. Our new neighbors must be wealthy people.
However, it never occurred to us four children that rich people may not be interested in befriending us. Our house badly needed a new coat of paint. We were clean and tidy most of the time, but our clothes were clearly old and worn. Father drove an old car that we could hear coming down the road long before it was in sight. We were simple, ordinary people.
When the new occupants arrived in a big and shiny car, we pushed one another to get a good look at them from our bedroom window. Mother had forbidden us from hanging around our gate. She said our new neighbors needed privacy, whatever that was. A beautifully dressed lady got out of the car. To our joy, we saw a boy and a girl about our age following her into the house. They did not look excited to move into their new home though. That did not stop us from wanting to get to know them.
The next evening, we were playing hide-and-seek in the garden when we spotted the boy and the girl watching us. My siblings and I went to the fence that separated our gardens. My eldest brother Kian called to the pair. They looked at us unsmilingly. Their mother appeared next, took one look at us and brought the two into the house. We were disappointed to have such snooty (傲慢的) neighbors. We decided to leave them alone after that.
