二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 26、Australia was always a country I wanted to visit, so I saved up some money and booked a flight to go traveling up the east coast of Australia at the end of my work in London.

The flight made me realize exactly how far away Australia is from home. I spent 10 hours traveling on a plane from London to Hong Kong, then a further 8 hours to Sydney, my first stop in Australia. The flight went quite quickly though, since there were lots of films to watch to keep me amused. It was strange when I arrived because everything was upside down over there; it was the start of winter (in May)! It also took me a while to get used to the time difference as I was always one day ahead of all my friends and family back home.

The country is truly beautiful, full of amazing views and wildlife you wouldn’t find anywhere else in the world.

One of my experiences of my trip was seeing koalas closely in Brisbane -- there were koalas everywhere sleeping in the trees and I even got the chance to hold one. There was also big grassland full of kangaroos that we were allowed to feed. They were really smart and very friendly.

The highlight of my trip was snorkeling in the Great Barrier Reef, as the water as amazingly clear with a beautiful shade of blue. I also got the chance to see some special creatures underwater, such as sea turtles and even a shark.

Australia is an amazing country and worth visiting one day if you ever get the chance.

【1】Why didn’t the author get bored on the plane?

A.Because the journey didn’t take him too long.

B.Because he could experience time difference.

    A.Fishing on the sea.

    B.Watching animal shows.

A.Exciting sports during the trip in Australia.

  • 27、   Generally speaking, if you can see lightning or hear thunder, you are already at the risk of storms. While most people choose to stay in their home, it is important to know what else to do to stay safe. 1.

Stop outdoor activities whenever you see lightning or hear thunder. Avoid dangerous things in open areas, such as tall trees and advertising boards. 2. Large buildings might be much safer than smaller or open structures.

If you are driving, safely pull over and park your car. 3. Do not touch any metal part of the vehicle. Leave the overhead light on when the engine is running so that you can be seen. Then stay in the vehicle and wait for help.

    4. Avoid using the telephone, taking a shower, washing your hands, doing dishes and watching TV. Stay away from windows and doors and stay off balconies (露台). Listen to a local radio for the latest weather information.

Most thunderstorms produce heavy rain for a brief period. 5. Keep away from broken power lines and avoid storm-damaged areas. Because the lightning threat can exist even when it is cloudy and not raining.

A.Make sure its windows are closed

B.So, here are some additional tips for you

C.And immediately find your shelter in a firm building

  • 28、   If you know a bottle of water has been recycled from urine (尿液), will you drink it? Chinese astronauts have done so.

China National Space Administration(CNSA)says it uses a high-tech machine to recycle wastewater. The machine will recycle everything from sweat, the water for washing hands, shower water, water used for brushing teeth, and even urine, to make drinking water.

It saves CNSA millions of YMB each year. At present, each CNSA astronaut uses about 4.4 liters of water every day. It costs about 150 million a year to transport water up to space.

The urine recycling system is needed for astronaut stations because it won’t have to ship up as much water to the station by space shuttles or rockets. Besides, it’s important as the space station is about to expand from three people living on board to more.

The recycling system was brought up to the space station last August by space shuttles. The three-man crew stood holding their drinks and congratulated engineers in CNSA center that worked on the system.

“This is something that has been the stuff of science work,” astronaut Chen Dong said before taking a small mouthful. “The taste is well worth trying.”

Is the water clean? Scientists say the wastewater will go through a very complicated (复杂的) process. For example, different chemicals will be put in the wastewater; the water will be heated to 130C to get rid of bacteria. The recycled water is thousands of times better than the water from a city tap, scientists say.

1What can the water recycled from urine be used for?

    A.Drinking.

    B.Washing hands.

    C.Brushing teeth.

    D.Taking a bath.

2Why is a high-tech machine to recycle wastewater needed on space stations?

A.To get astronauts to keep healthy.

    B.To help astronauts do experiments.

C.To provide astronauts a basic living condition.

D.To save the cost of transporting water up to space.

3Scientists get rid of bacteria in the wastewater by ________.

    A.recycling

    B.freezing

    C.heating

    D.collecting

4What does the text mainly talk about?

A.Water recycled from urine tastes good.

B.How to recycle the wastewater on space.

C.New technology is used in the Chinese space station.

D.CNSA uses a high-tech machine to recycle wastewater for astronaut stations.

  • 29、I was in the Altai Mountains with Biosphere Expeditions(生物圈考察队). I was a member of the expedition which was the first to take part in a survey of snow leopards(雪豹)in this part of the world.

Getting to the base camp had already been an expedition. It was getting dark as we arrived. After a very welcome night’s sleep, we were up early for some training on how to write down the data, how to identify animal tracks, and what to do with useful animal droppings.

The next day, our group set off up one of the mountains to do our first research with our guide Oleg. We spent most of the morning climbing the endless mountains. By early afternoon, we reached what appeared to be the top but was another ridge(山脊). My 47-year-old bones were shaking, and I was trying very hard to breathe. We hadn’t seen a thing except for rocky mountains. Our guide was keeping going, but we had very little idea about what we were supposed to be doing. Energy was dropping rapidly.

Then everything changed. Hardly able to speak with excitement, one of the other groups told us that they had just discovered fresh snow leopard tracks!

On arrival, we found the group silently looking at the mountain. A set of very clear paw prints(爪印)ran from top to bottom. I was filled with a feeling of complete excitement. One of the rarest big cats in the world had passed through where I was standing! They were here and what we were going to do would help them survive.

Health Workers Aim to Save Lives of Mothers, Babies with Smartphone Data

A new project in India and Uganda is aimed at helping health workers save the lives of mothers and babies with information from electronic devices.

The $100 million project is 1 by the Rockefeller Foundation, the World Health Organization, UNICEF, the World Bank and other groups. Officials plan to 2 the project to a total of 10 countries. The goal is to 3 the premature deaths of 6 million women and children by 2030.

Raj Shah is president of the Rockefeller Foundation, which leads the project. The group is providing $60 million of the $100 million 4 cost. Shah said the plan is to give health workers low-cost tools to help them gather the information they need to help communities and families most at risk.

The project will provide 5 such as real-time risk maps to help health workers reach mothers and children. Workers also will be able to study non-health data on climate or social media patterns to predict and prepare for local disease 6 or health emergencies.

Shah told Reuters, "A few years ago, these community health workers had no real technology ... today the vast majority of them have smartphones with data and software technologies in their hands --- and with those, we can help them do their work better."

A U.N. report published last week 7 that more women and newborn babies survive now than ever before. But the report said that a baby or a 8 woman still dies every 11 seconds somewhere in the world.

Deaths of mothers are nearly 50 times higher for women in sub-Saharan Africa than in 9 countries. The report also found that babies in Sub-Saharan Africa are 10 times more 10 to die in their first month of life.
