27、 China Youth says that more and more girl students have entered colleges to study in the recent few years. As we know, once the number of boys was larger than that of girls and boys did much better than girls in our country for a long time. Now, things have changed a lot.
In recent years, the proportion (比例) of girl students is growing fast. In 1998, about 39.7% of college students were girls. In 2000, it was 41.07% and in 2001, the number was 42.14%.
There are several reasons for this.
Firstly, there is little difference between boys and girls in their intelligence (智力). That’s to say, girls are as clever as boys. And boys have more interests than girls, so they may not always do well in their study.

28、Ask many actors and they will tell you it is hard to get work when you are just starting out and as you get older. However, it has not been the case for American musical (音乐剧) actress Susan Watson.
In 1958, at the age of 20, Watson was offered a part in the musical, West Side Story, in London. At that time, she was still a student at New York City’s Juilliard School for musicians, dancers and actors. More than 50 years later, she was offered another part. Watson took an important role in a remake of the musical, Follies, at the Kennedy Center in Washington and the Marquis Theatre in New York City. In both cases, the offers came from musical theater legend Stephen Sondheim. He wrote the lyrics for West Side Story and the music and lyrics for Follies.
As a teenager, Watson developed her dancing, singing and acting skills in her hometown of Tulsa, Oklahoma. She traveled to study at New York City’s Juilliard School before Sondheim interrupted her studies with the offer of a part in West Side Story. The awardwinning musical, based on William Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet, tells a story of the struggles of immigrants (移民) in New York City. In the following two decades, Watson had starring roles in such wellknown musicals as The Fantasticks, Bye Bye Birdie, Carnival, Celebration and No, No, Nanette.
Musicals are an American invention. They tell stories through many art forms: spoken words, songs, acting and dances. “Music adds an important emotional element, making an interesting story even more powerful,” Watson said.
At age 78, Watson now lives in California, but she has not stopped performing. She just released a new album called The Music Never Ends. She is excited that six of the 14 songs on her new album were written by “empowered (获得授权的) women”, including Nancy Ford and Gretchen Cryer. She says her new musical record is selling “very well” partly because people do not have to go to a store to buy it. They can buy it online, like almost any other product.

I live in a city where jobs are difficult to get and if you want to find a well-paid job, it will be even harder. Therefore, it is not surprising for you to see many people in our city walk a long way because they can’t even afford an old used car.
It was a cold windy day. I saw one of these people who often have to walk from and to work every day, when I was driving after work. A middle-aged man wearing only a thin overcoat was walking down the road and trying to ask for a ride from the passing cars. Unluckily, there was no driver willing to stop their cars. When I saw two cars in front of me pass him by, I wanted to do the same. But the sight of that poor man remained in my mind for quite a moment. I felt as if a big hand was dragging me and forcing me not to leave. Finally I drew back and gave him a ride.
As I drove along, we had a conversation, during which he told me something about himself and his family. I learnt that the man was doing everything he could to support his family using the limited salary from several part-time jobs. As you could imagine, every coin he earned was going to be used to pay for the house and food.
It was a long drive before we got to his home. All the way, I could feel his hardship and tiredness. But as we came close to the house where he was living, I saw his tired eyes grow bright and the whole body was lit up. His lovely girl was playing in the front yard. Seeing her father was out of the car, she ran to him as quickly as possible, reaching out her two small hands. He held the girl with his two strong hands, laughing and kissing her cheeks. I was lost in that happy moment. I smiled, said goodbye to them, wished them the future happiness and then drove off.
