26、How to Study Smarter, Not Harder
Here are some of our favorite study tips that will help any student study smarter, not harder:
Recite As You Study
Reciting—saying things out loud should first take place as you read through each paragraph or section. Test yourself. This will help you to understand as well as learn faster because it is more active than reading or listening. It will also help you to notice your mistakes and the topics you have trouble understanding.
Take Fuller Notes
Notes should be in your own words, brief and clear. They should be tidy and easy to read. Writing notes will help you better than just underlining as you read, since it forces you to rewrite ideas in your own words.
Study the Middle
The best time to review is soon after you’ve learned something. You are more likely to remember the material at the beginning and the end of the lesson, so make sure you focus on the middle when you review.
Sleep On It
Study before going to bed, unless you are very tired. It’s easier to remember material you have just learned after sleeping than after an equal period of daytime activity, because your brain continues to think even after you’ve fallen asleep.
Combine(结合) Memory and Understanding
There are two ways to remember: by memorizing and by understanding. Multiplication tables, telephone numbers, and math formulas are better learned by rote. Ideas are best learned by understanding.
The more ways you have to think about an idea, the more meaning it will have; the more meaningful the learning, the better you can remember it. Pay attention to similarities in ideas and concepts, and then try to understand how they fit in with things you already know. Never be satisfied with anything less than a completely clear understanding of what you are reading. If you are not able to follow the thought, go back to the place where you first got confused and try again.
【1】You can notice your mistakes by .
A. studying the middle B. taking notes
C. speaking things out aloud D. sleeping on it
【2】When taking notes, you should to better help you with reading.
A. underline important notes

C. take down every detail
D. write notes in your own words
【3】The writer advises you to as it is easier for you to remember material.
A. study before going to sleep
B. do some exercise after studying
C. study as soon as you get up
D. study after a period of activity
【4】Which of the following is NOT helpful for your understanding?
A. Thinking about an idea in different ways.
B. Reading from the beginning to the end without stop.
C. Relating ideas and concepts with what you already know.
D. Going back to what first made you confused and start again.
27、 A new video involving John Cena is popular, but it isn't of the popular wrestlercompeting with another wrestler. No, it's 9-year-old Benjamin Russo creating a huge portrait of Cena with 750 Rubik's Cubes.
The video starts with Benjamin holding up a series of cards, in which he explains he has dyslexia and struggles with reading and writing. “I mix up my words. I get very upset sometimes,” the cards read. “But having dyslexia also means I can do something amazing! Like this...”. The video then shows Benjamin putting hundreds of Rubik's Cubes into specific places. In the end, all 750 cubes have been arranged and the patterns come together to show a portrait of Cena. Then, Benjamin lifts up two more cards. They read: “Dyslexia is not my disability. Dyslexia is my superpower.”
Benjamin's amazing talent caught the attention of Cena. “This young boy is proving to people that anything is possible—no matter what your learning disorder is,” Cena wrote online. “Benjamin shows up courage, determination, strength...and he's an artist!” Cena even called Benjamin “a hero of mine.”
Unfortunately, the family can't buy 750 Rubik's Cubes every time Benjamin takes on a new project. However, he has already completed his next one—it's none other than Keanu Reeves.
Benjamin's parents hope his story will change how people see dyslexia. “The general public sees dyslexia basically as flipping words around, and that's where it ends,” Louis, his father, said. “We never talk about the advantages and the special gifts that many dyslexics have, and Benjamin is not alone. So I think that's what we're trying to do: get the positives out there and leave the negatives behind.”
【1】What worries Benjamin according to the video?
A.He can't speak out at school.
B.He is uninterested in writing.
C.He has difficulty in learning.
D.He can't solve a Rubik's Cube.
【2】How does Benjamin look at his dyslexia?
A.It hides his gift and intelligence.
B.It has turned into an advantage.
C.It has helped him behave well at school.
D.It makes him embarrassed to speak in public.
【3】What was Cena's attitude to Benjamin?
A.He doubted Benjamin's ability.
B.He gave Benjamin plenty of praise.
C.He had mixed feelings about Benjamin.
D.He expressed his thanks to Benjamin.
【4】What do Benjamin's parents make an effort to do?
A.Discover Benjamin's special talent.
B.Get economic support from the public.
C.Change public opinion of dyslexia.
D.Buy 750 Rubik's Cubes for Benjamin.
28、Standing in my office 25 years ago was an unknown young astronomer with a half-smile on her face. She had come with an impossible request that my team modify (修改) our thoroughly tested software to make one of our most important scientific instruments do something it had never been designed for and risk breaking it. All to carry out an experiment that was basically a waste of time and couldn’t be done—prove that a massive black hole lay at the center of our Milky Way.
My initial “no way” gradually gave way in the face of her cheerful but firm determination. Andrea Ghez, one of three winners of this year’s Nobel Prize in Physics, impressed me with her work on providing solid evidence of a supermassive black hole with the mass of four million suns living at the center of the Milly Way galaxy.
That determination and the willingness to take calculated risks has always characterized Andrea. For 25 years she has focused almost completely on Sagittarius A—the name of our own local supermassive black hole. It is remarkable that an entire field of study has grown up in the quarter century, of searching for and finding evidence of these monsters thought to lie at the heart of every large galaxy.
Andrea did her work at the W. M. Keck Observatory’s (天文台) twin telescopes on Maunakea, Hawaii, in the calm and clear air almost 14000 feet above the Pacific Ocean. She started using the very first instrument fixed on Keck Observatory’s Near Infrared Camera (NIRC), now gracing the lobby (大厅) at our headquarters.
Andrea is fond of pointing out that one of the reasons for her success has been this tight and rapid loop (循环) between the needs of the needs of the astronomers and the engineers who responded to the challenge.
This is my friend and longtime colleague, the one who refused to take “no” for an answer: Andrea Ghez, winner of the 2020 Nobel Prize in Physics.
【1】Which words best describe Andrea Ghez?
A.Determined and creative.
B.Confident and adaptable.
C.Brave and kind.
D.Cooperative and generous.
【2】What is the passage mainly about?
A.The Noble Prize for physics.
B.Friendship between colleagues.
C.How Andrea won the Nobel.
D.What makes Andrea different.
【3】What does the underlined word “gracing” in Paragraph 4 probably mean?
A.Making more attractive.
B.Bring honour to.
C.Moving in a smooth way.
D.Advancing the level.
29、How is it that siblings (兄弟姐妹) can turn out so differently? One answer is that in fact each sibling grows up in a different family. The firstborn is, for a while, an only child, and therefore has a completely different experience of the parents than those born later. The next child is, for a while, the youngest, until the situation is changed by a new arrival. The mother and father themselves are changing and growing up too. One sibling might live in a stable and close family in the first few years; another might be raised in a family crisis, with a disappointed mother or an angry father.
Sibling competition was identified as an important shaping force as early as in 1918. But more recently, researchers have found many ways in which brothers and sisters are a lasting force in each others’ lives. Dr. Annette Henderson says firstborn children pick up vocabulary more quickly than their siblings. The reason for this might be that the later children aren’t getting the same one-on-one time with parents. But that doesn’t mean that the younger children have problems with language development. Later-borns don’t enjoy that much talking time with parents, but instead they harvest lessons from bigger brothers and sisters, learning entire phrases and getting an understanding of social concepts such as the difference between “I” and “me”.
A Cambridge University study of 140 children found that siblings created a rich world of play that helped them grow socially. Love-hate relationships were common among the children. Even those siblings who fought the most had just as much positive communication as the other sibling pairs.
One way children seek more attention from parents is by making themselves different from their siblings, particularly if they are close in age. Researchers have found that the first two children in a family are typically more different from each other than the second and third. Girls with brothers show their differences to a maximum degree by being more feminine than girls with sisters. A 2003 research paper studied adolescents from 185 families over two years, finding that those who changed to make themselves different from their siblings were successful in increasing the amount of warmth they gained from their parents.

In the beautiful city of San Francisco, it was spring. The flowers were blooming, the sun was shining, and the birds were singing their beautiful song. In a nearby basketball stadium, there was a basketball championship going on. Jesse like his elder brother Timmy, was one of the best in the competition; he scored most of his team's points, but his team did not like that. Jesse never passed the ball. His coach always told him that it was a team game and not a one-man show.
“Jesse, pass the ball more, ” insisted Coach Tyler.
“Coach, I am good; I can win this whole tournament by myself if I want to, ” responded Jesse.
“Jesse, you need to learn to respect the game! ” said Coach Tyler.
“I don't need to respect anything,” said Jesse.
“Okay then, and I don't need you in my team, Jesse. Get out of here! ” said Coach Tyler.
“Fine! ” replied Jesse angrily.
At school Jesse's friends Zack, Christopher, and De'Aaron were trying to calm down Jesse, who was still angry about what happened the previous day. Jesse was usually good in school, but after he was kicked out of the team, his attitude changed. He started doing poorly; he got in trouble and failed classes. Jesse tried to join other basketball teams, but he could not because their list was filled or he was too young or too old. Finally, Jesse was recommended a team by Zack.
“Thanks, bro, ” said Jesse happily.
“No problem, Jesse, ” responded Zack. Five months later...
Jesse started passing the ball more, but he still averaged 26.4 points per game. Jesse enjoyed how he played, but he did not like that he was coming off the bench. Jesse proved that he was a star on the court, but still the coach said that he was better coming off the bench. “Coach, I think I have shown that I can start next game, ”said Jesse calmly. “No, Jesse, you are not good. ” responded the coach. “But...” said Jesse before the coach interrupted him. “No, Jesse! ”Jesse started getting mad. “Coach, you need to start me. I’m the best in this team,” said Jesse arrogantly(傲慢地). “Jesse, how about you just leave? ”bellowed(吼叫) the coach.
