二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 26、   A new study shows that when teachers participate in a training programme focused on prosocial (亲社会的) classroom behaviour, their students are better able to control their emotions, and that children who can regulate emotions are more likely to be academically successful.

For the study, which appears in Prevention Science, researchers looked at more than 100 teachers and 1,817 students from kindergarten to third grade to see if teachers could support students’ emotional and behavioural growth through the Incredible Years-Teacher Classroom Management (IY-TCM) programme.

The programme uses videos and training sessions, along with role-playing and coaching, to help teachers learn management skills such as using behaviour-specific praise, building positive relationships with students, and considering how to reduce poor behaviour. Teachers in the training group increased interactions with students by 64 per cent compared with 53 per cent for teachers in the control group without the training.

“Emotional regulation is the ability to recognize what behaviour is appropriate in the present situation,” says Wendy Reinke, a professor in the College of Education at the University of Missouri. “For example, a student might have difficulty controlling the feeling of anger if he or she becomes annoyed with another student. But under this programme, the teacher encourages them to move to a different spot in the classroom, effectively teaching them that sometimes stepping away and taking a break is a good way to calm down and manage the feeling.”

After one school year of using the programme in classrooms, students improved their social ability and ability to regulate their emotions. These improvements resulted in an increase in the tests for students in Incredible Years classrooms vs students in control classrooms. And this classroom management approach can help reduce the risk for struggling learners early on, which could help prevent more accumulative support needs in a child’s future.

1What do the teachers do in the IY-TCM programme?

A.Learn how to identify poor behaviour.

B.Offer the researchers advice on emotional control.

C.Take care of kids from kindergarten to third grade.

D.Apply different ways to learning how to manage kids.

2What do Wendy Reinke’s words suggest in Para. 4?

A.Now it is hard for students to control their anger.

B.A calm manner is an effective way to handle problems.

C.Few can realize their behaviour is unfit for a situation.

D.The programme will show how to handle troublesome kids.

3What can we learn from the last paragraph?

A.Study results of the programme are entirely unexpected.

B.Students in control classrooms can better control their emotions.

C.The programme advances the students’ academic performance.

D.Students change their bad behaviour shortly through the programme.

4What is the author’s attitude towards the training programme?

    A.Positive. B.Negative. C.Subjective. D.Indifferent.

  • 27、   Last weekend, I was talking about winter vacation plans with a friend when I suddenly realized that this year I should start up an old plan of learning how to skate again.

I’ve always wanted to learn skating. But I didn’t have a proper chance to learn it. When I was young, the small coastal city where I lived had no ice rink (溜冰场). My parents signed me up for classes at a skating school out of town, but I had to catch the early bus on weekends to get there, and it took two hours to go and come back, so I gave it up pretty quickly.

Now is my chance to fulfill my childhood dream! Excited, I started calling skating rinks in Beijing, hoping to sign up for lessons. But some said they only had classes for children. Some said it was too much trouble to teach adults. One receptionist paused after my question and said strangely, “You never learned this as a child?”

I understand if they don’t get many adult learners, but to say that adults are harder to teach than children is such a slap in the face. I thought I lived in a society that encourages people to take on lifelong learning. Is there some unspoken rule that says after one reaches a certain age, he or she is not allowed to learn systematically with a trainer anymore? Are adults not allowed to pursue new hobbies?

There were many things I didn’t have time to properly learn when I was young. I failed to see how important hobbies were, and I was sick of my parents nagging (唠叨) me to do after-school activities. Today, when I want to go out with friends, I find I have so few activities to do with them. And now I’m being told that I can’t even make up for my childhood mistake. It seems that I’ve missed my chance. I missed it 20 years ago. Now, I can only go on being ordinary.

1The author gave up learning skating when she was young because _____________.

    A.she wasn’t interested in it

B.her parents didn’t allow her to learn it

C.her parents couldn’t find any skating schools

D.it was inconvenient for her to take the lessons

2How did those skating rinks the author called respond to her request?

    A.Positively. B.Anxiously.

    C.Flexibly. D.Disappointingly.

3Which could be the author’s opinion?

A.It’s never too late to learn.

B.It’s understandable that adults don’t like learning.

C.Adults are harder to teach than kids.

D.Adults had better not pursue new hobbies.

4The passage is written to express the author’s ___________.

A.fear of going on being ordinary

    B.determination to learn skating well

C.regret for losing the chance of pursuing hobbies

D.blame on her parents’ nagging her to do after-school activities

  • 28、In the past several years, air travel has become less appealing for some travellers. Tighter security regulations mean longer waits. Rising fuel prices can lead to more expensive tickets. Despite(尽管) the inconveniences, air travel still has a number of advantages over car, train and bus travel.

For a long distance, air travel is the fastest way to get to your destination, but even on shorter trips planes are much quicker. On a medium-length trip from New York City to Detroit, a flight will take about 4.5 hours—including an hour’s driving to and from the airport and an hour’s waiting in the terminal(终点站) — while a car ride will take 9.5 hours, a bus ride almost 15 hours and a train ride about 16.5 hours. Buses, cars and trains only begin to become competitive on extremely short trips such as from NYC to Philadelphia.

Plane crashes are tragic events that can result in hundreds of deaths. Fortunately, they are extremely rare. According to Chance News, the odds(可能性) of dying on a 1,000-mile flight are significantly less than those from dying on a 100-mile car ride. Car, bus and train travel are also more dangerous than flying on a plane.

The cost of tickets for airplane, bus and train travel can vary greatly. In many cases, however, air travel is the cheapest way. A trip from New York City to Detroit costs $86 by plane. This is comparable to slightly cheaper train tickets ($75) and bus tickets ($80) and cheaper than car travel ($115). On the longer New York City to Los Angeles trip, the advantages of air travel shine: airplane tickets are more than 30 dollars less than train tickets, the cheapest alternative.

【1】Which means of transportation takes the longest time from New York City to Detroit?

    A.A train ride.

    B.A car ride.

    C.A bus ride.

    D.A flight.

A.He is worried about the safety of air travel.

B.He is familiar with the trip between New York City and Detroit.

C.He prefers travelling by car rather than by bus.

D.He chooses to travel by train while travelling around the US.

【4】What’s the best title for the text?

    A.The Traffic System in America

B.The Disadvantages of Air, Train and Bus Travel

  • 29、In my own case, as a reporter for a local newspaper, I had more than my fair share of interesting and exciting tasks. These included interviewing famous actors like Robert De Niro and Meryl Streep, presidential candidates (候选人) Jimmy Carter and Henry Jackson, Franklin D. Roosevelt Jr., son of a former president, and a variety of other stars, too many to mention. There were many other highlights too. The fact is, reporting is a great job and remains so.

Despite the low income, reporters are the beneficiaries (受益者) of free tickets, drinks or dinners. This practice enables reporters to broaden their news sources which are important in covering the news, and also adds to the excitement of the job. The downside to accepting these “perks (好处)” is that it colors or influences the reporting of actual news stories, and on occasion it does, although hardly at all when hard news coverage is involved.

In the old days, reporters had very little special training but they certainly knew how to gather facts and present them in a logical way that could be easily understood by readers. Old-timers also had unique and different news sources from all sectors of society and were often seen spending nighttime hours in the local pub (酒馆) cultivating those contacts.

That is pretty much over today. For better or worse, news reporters live in a kind of “bubble”, and the newsroom is closed off to the general public. Reporters tend to deal strictly with official government spokespersons for their information, and they are not so free to accept a lunch with whomever they choose and tickets to events. The result is that the daily news pretty much sounds the same around the world, despite there being hundreds of major outlets reporting on the news.

The old days of cultivating sources, working around the clock, and relying on your own sources and instincts (直觉) to report the news are fun to remember. It was a life of daily excitement, perks, and very little pay. Yet, if I could go back and do it all again, I would.

【1】Which word best describes the author’s career according to paragraph 1?

    A.Unrewarding.

    B.Successful.

    C.Political.

    D.Brief.

【2】What does the underlined word “That” in paragraph 4 refer to?

    A.Drinking on the job.

    B.Receiving free perks.

    C.Training to gather facts.

    D.Socializing to find news sources.

【3】What does the author say about the news reporting in the old days?

    A.It was a dead-end job.

    B.It was interesting.

    C.It was highly-paid.

    D.It was unprofessional.

【4】Which of the following can be the best title for the text?

    A.My understanding of real news

    B.A glance at modern newsrooms

    C.A journey down memory lane

D.My experience as a news reporter
