  • 26、Can You Trust Your Brain?

Your brain lies to you a lot. We’re sorry to have to tell you this but it’s true. Even when your brain is doing important and difficult stuff, you’re not aware of most of what’s going on.

Your brain doesn’t intend to lie to you, of course. For the most part, it’s doing a great job, working hard to help you survive and achieve your goals in a complicated world. Because you often have to react quickly to emergencies and opportunities, your brain usually tries to get a simple answer in a hurry rather than a prefect answer that takes time to work out. But as the world is not simple, this means that your brain has to take shortcuts and make a lot of assumptions. 1

The problem start when the brain takes in information from the world through the senses. Even if you are sitting quietly in a room, your brain receives far more information than it can hold on to or than you need to decide how to act. You may be aware of the detailed pattern of colours in the rug, the photographs on the wall and the sounds of birds outside. 2 Usually these things aren’t important so we don’t often notice how much information we lose.

When people look at complicated pictures, they can identify differences if the images remain still. But if the image moves quickly, then they have a lot more trouble. 3 To test this, psychologists have tried more interesting ways of getting people to fail to notice things. In one of our favorites, a researcher approaches someone on the street and asks for directions. While the person is replying, workmen carry a large door between the two people, blocking their view of each other. Behind the cover of the door, the person who asked for directions is replaced by another researcher who carries on the conversation as if nothing had happened. Even when the second person looks very different from the first, the person giving the directions has only about a fifty per cent chance of noticing the change. 4

A.Your brain’s lies are in your best interest—most of the time—but they also lead to predictable mistakes.

B.This is because we imagine that we remember more details than we really can.

C.The experiments illustrate that you perceive only a little bit of what’s going on in the world.

D.Your brain selectively processes details that are important for you to notice.

E.Your brain perceives many other aspects of the scene initially but quickly forgets them.

F.This happens because our visual memory isn’t very good.

  • 27、Many countries have traditional dishes, made with special ingredients and prepared in a certain way. 【1】, and when tourists visit, these are the foods they want to try. But why are some foods more popular than others in certain areas?

    Traditional ingredients

Typical recipes (菜谱) are usually made with native plant and animal products. For example, Korean dishes often include rice and soybeans because both plants are native to East Asia and grow well in hot, wet areas. In contrast, wheat grows well in drier areas, like the Middle East, where bread is a common staple food.【2】, whereas inland cuisines tend to use more meat from farm animals.

    Food preservation

Local cuisines often depend on how people traditionally prepared food for storage. In warm weather, meat and fish can go off quickly, so they must be cooked right away or preserved for later. 【3】, for that reason, modern Norwegian cuisine includes many smoked foods.

    Cooking techniques

【4】. In China, people often fry food in a deep metal pan or steam it in a basket over hot water. In Morocco, people cook traditional dishes in a special pot called a tajine. And some local dishes aren’t cooked at all.

    Imported (进口的) ingredients

Sometimes local cuisines include ingredients that originally came from another place. 【5】, while many Russian dishes are made with potatoes. However, all of these ingredients were brought to Europe from South America in the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries. But now they are common around the world.

A.Seafood is often a key ingredient in coastal areas

B.There is a danger that local food traditions will be lost

C.Many different cooking techniques are used around the world

D.For example, Italian dishes often include tomatoes and peppers.

E.These local dishes can become symbols of a place and its culture.

F.Nowadays, we can buy food products from all around the world

G.In Norway, the Vikings used to “cure” meat and fish by smoking them over a fire

  • 29、   The Aral Sea was once the world's fourth largest lake. Filled with salt water and at least 24 species of fish, the Aral Sea supported a large fishing industry. In the 1960s, water from the Aral Sea started to be used to irrigate dry fields to produce cotton. Three quarters of the water was pumped from the sea over the next two decades, leaving behind a salt-covered desert. The disappearing Aral Sea split into two separate lakes-the small Northern Sea and a much larger body of water to the south.

By that time, most fish in the Aral Sea were gone. Salty irrigation water soon damaged the soil in the cotton fields, so huge amounts of chemical pesticides(杀虫剂)and fertilizers were used trying to keep the fields productive, which could be found in the groundwater and drinking water although must cotton fields disappeared, And the wind picked up salt from the dried-up lake and carried it to farmland far from the Aral. Besides, people who lived in the area experienced many health problems.

Today, however, there is some hope for the region. In the late 1990s, people in Kazakhstan used sand and soil to build a dam that would prevent the Syr Dar'ya river water that fed the lake from flowing, out of the lake. They also decided to take less water from the river for irrigation. The water level began to rise, and places that had been completely dry for decades began to show signs of life. People who lived nearby began to believe that the Aral Sea might return.

A permanent dam, the Kok-aral dam, was completed in August 2005. By April 2006, the water level had already risen three meters, and the water was less salty. The northern part of the Aral Sea may soon be a much healthier place to live for both fish and people.

1What aspect of the Aral Sea does paragraph 1 focus on?

A.Description of the landform. B.Protection of the ecosystem.

C.Methods of the development. D.Reasons for the disaster.

2What measure did Kazakhstan employ to save the Aral Sea in the 1990s?

A.They gave up the cotton fields for it.

B.They reduced its consumption for irrigation.

C.They replaced the earthen dam with a new one.

D.They stopped the Syr Dar'ya river water running into it.

3What is the writer's attitude towards the future of the Aral Sea?

    A.Concerned B.Positive. C.Skeptical. D.Cautious.

4What is the best title of the passage?

    A.Bringing Back the Aral Sea

B.Building dams in the Aral Sea area

C.The disappearance of the Aral Sea

D.The development of the Aral Sea

  • 40、Directions: Read the following passage and fill in the blanks to compete the summary. No more than seven words for each blank.

Sports can help you keep fit and get in touch with nature. However, whether you are on the mountains, in the waves, or on the grassland, you should be aware that your sport of choice might have great influence on the environment.

Some sports are resource-hungry. Golf, as you may know, eats up not only large areas of countryside, but also tons of water. Besides, all sorts of chemicals and huge amounts of energy are used to keep its courses in good condition. This causes major environmental effects. For example, in the dry regions of Portugal and Spain, golf is often held responsible for serious water shortage in some local areas.

There are many environment-friendly sports. Power walking is one of them that you could take up today. You don’t need any special equipment except a good pair of shoes; and you don’t have to worry about resources and your purse. Simple and free, power walking can also keep you fit. If you walk regularly, it will be good for your heart and bones. Experts say that 20 minutes of power walking daily can make you feel less anxious, sleep well and have better weight control.

Whatever sport you take up, you can make it greener by using environment-friendly equipment and buying products made from recycled materials. But the final goal should be “green gyms”. They are better replacements for traditional health clubs and modern sports centers. Members of green gyms play sports outdoors, in the countryside or other open spaces. There is no special requirement for you to start your membership. And best of all, it’s free.

The sport you choose may 1.Some sports are 2, like golf, which not only 3, but 4 as well, doing damage to environment; while others 5, like the power walking, which is 6. Thus 7 you choose to do, use 8.
