二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、   I. M. Pei, one of the best-known architects of the 20th century, has died. He was 102. Born in China, Ieoh Ming Pei moved to the United States in 1935 to study architecture at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Harvard University.

Pei’s works around the world include museums, government buildings, hotels, schools and other structures built with stone, steel and glass. One of his best-known and most disputed works was built 30 years ago. Pei created a new entrance for the world-famous Louvre Museum in Paris. Pei first spent four months studying the museum and French history. He then drew plans for a 21-meter-tall steel and glass id, with three smaller pyramids nearby. It was a very futuristic style of work for the 12th-century building.

A French newspaper criticized Pei’s pyramids as “an annex to Disneyland”. An environmental group said they belonged in a desert. Others accused Pei of ruining one of the world’s greatest landmarks.

Pei said the Louvre was the most difficult job of his career. He argued that he had wanted to create a modern space that would not take away from the traditional part of the museum. He said the glass pyramids were based on the works of French landscape architect Le Notre. They honored French history.

The pyramids opened in the spring of 1989. Over the years that followed, the structure came to be loved by most, if not all, of its critics.

Other well-known Pei buildings include the John F. Kennedy Library in Dorchester, Massachusetts, the National Center for Atmospheric Research in Boulder, Colorado, the East Wing of the National Gallery of Art in Washington and the Dallas City Hall in Texas. Pei officially retired in 1990. However, he continued to work on projects—including museums in Luxembourg, Qatar and his ancestral home of Suzhou.

1What is true about the entrance created by Pei for the Louvre Museum?

A.Pei spent four mouths drawing plans for it. B.There are four pyramids in total.

C.It’s in a style of the 12th century. D.It took 30 years to complete the work.

2What can we infer from Pei’s words in Paragraph 4?

A.The glass pyramids were originally designed by Le Notre.

B.The glass pyramids were based on the French landscape.

C.The glass pyramids were in harmony with the Louvre.

D.The glass pyramids reflected both French and Chinese style.

3What were most people’s attitudes towards Pei’s pyramids years after its opening?

    A.Indifferent. B.Puzzled.

    C.Critical. D.Favorable.

4What do we know about Pei according to the passage?

A.He was hardworking, optimistic and easygoing.

B.He spread Chinese traditional architecture to the world.

C.He created many great works both in China and other countries.

D.He was the most outstanding architect of the 20th century.

  • 23、   The team, led by Michael T. Tolley, a professor of mechanical engineering at the Jacobs School of Engineering at UC San Diego, details its findings in the Feb 17, 2021 issue of the journal Science Robotics.

“This work represents a fundamental yet significant step towards fully-autonomous, electronics-free walking robots,” said Dylan Drotman, a Ph. D. student in Tolley’s research group and the paper’s first author.

Applications include low-cost robots for entertainment, such as toys, and robots that can operate in environments where electronics cannot function, such as MRI machines. Soft robots are of particular interest because they easily adapt to their environment and operate safely near humans.

Most soft robots are powered by air and are controlled by electronic circuits. But this approach requires complex components like circuit boards, valves (阀门) and pumps -often outside the robot’s body. These components, which make up the robot’s brains and nervous system, are typically large and expensive. By contrast, the UC San Diego robot is controlled by a light-weight, low-cost system of air-powered circuits, made up of tubes and soft valves, onboard the robot itself. The robot can walk on command or in response to signals it senses from the environment.

“With our approach, you could make a very complex robotic brain,” said Tolley, the study’s senior author. “Our focus here was to make the simplest air-powered nervous system needed to control walking.”

In the future, researchers want to improve the robot’s ways to walk so it can walk on natural field and uneven surfaces. This would allow the robot to navigate over a variety of obstacles (障碍). This would require a more complicated network of sensors and as a result a more complex air-powered system. The team will also look at how the technology could be used to create robots, which are in part controlled by air-powered circuits for some functions, such as walking.

【1】What is the achievement of the team’s study?

A.Their robots can walk a huge step.

    B.Their robots work following commands.

C.Their study gets their electronics for free.

D.They find a new technique in walking robots.

【2】What can the team’s robots be applied to from the passage?

    A.Toy companies’ products.

    B.Environmental protection.

    C.Human safety.

    D.Factories without workers.

【3】What will the researchers probably do?

    A.Change the way of power.

    B.Help robots walk as human.

    C.Improve robots to avoid obstacles.

D.Build a network to control robots.

【4】What is the passage mainly talking about?

A.The introduction to electronics-free walking robots.

    B.The functions of newly-developed robots.

C.The applications of soft walking robots.

D.The ways to improve traditional robots.

  • 24、   Holidaymakers planning to hit the beach in Ibiza this summer will need to wear face masks even when they’re sunbathing on the beach.

Previously, the Balearic Island had exempt (免除) sun-seekers from wearing face masks on beaches, provided they were social distancing. However, new rules have come into force from the Spanish central government which will make mask-wearing compulsory for anyone visiting outdoor public spaces - including beaches and pools. The new face mask policy also applies regardless of whether there is social distancing in place (1. 5m in Spain); so someone who is lying on a towel sunbathing away from others will still be required to wear a face mask. Those who break the rules could face fines of up to €100.

There will be some exemptions such as children who are under six, and adults with illnesses that could cause them breathing difficulties.

The decision comes as Spain has been noting a gradual rise in Covid-19 cases. And it’s not just Ibiza which will be affected - the new rules will be enforced in the Canary Islands and mainland Spain too, including popular tourist destinations such as Costa del Sol.

However, the Balearic Islands government is protesting against the new rules, arguing that the regulations could put people off holidays especially during the hot summer months. Earlier this month Spain ended a travel ban for British people, which had been in place since December due to a mutant strain of coronavirus (冠状病毒的突变株) found in the UK. It’s hoped that some international travel could begin again from May.

What do you think of Spain’s new face mask rules? Let us know in the comments below.

【1】What do we know about Spain’s new face mask rules?

A.Whoever breaks them will be fined at least €100.

    B.They won’t apply if people keep a social distance of 1.5 m.

C.Kids and adults with breathing difficulties needn’t obey them.

D.They’re policies reacting to the increase in Covid-19 cases.

【2】Why is the Balearic Islands government against the new rules?

A.It’s the area most affected by the new rules.

B.The new rules have a negative impact on its tourism.

C.The new rules will lead to a travel ban for the British.

D.Residents can’t live a normal life due to the new rules.

    【3】What’s this text?

    A.A travel brochure.

    B.An annual Survey.

    C.An online news report.

    D.An introduction to a book.

四、书面表达 (共1题,共 5分)
  • 26、阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

One evening I was resting in a cafe. I wore a pair of newly bought white leather shoes, which were rather expensive. Then a boy came to me.

He was in an unfit shirt, looking pale and about eleven. At sight of my new leather shoes, his big eyes were bright with hope. No sooner had I begun to speak than he opened the box in his hand and took out the tools of shoe-polishing. He quickly bent down, took off my leather shoes, and began to shine them.

He was busy doing his work when heavy rain began to pour down. People rushed to the café for shelter from the rain. More and more people crowded in and gradually separated the boy from me before I realized it. Hours passed, and it turned dark. I had no shoes on my feet and wondered where the boy had been. I thought he would not return my expensive shoes, and I would have to go home on my bare feet.

When it was near midnight the rain ended, and there were fewer and fewer people in the café. The café was to be closed. I had to move slowly to the door, head lowered. Just as I went to the gate, was surprised to find that a boy of about eleven, looking very familiar, was sleeping at the door with his head leaning against a box and his upper body being bare. He was holding a package made of his shirt tightly in his arms.
