二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 26、   Every feature of the supermarket--from floor plan and shelf layout to lighting, music, and ladies offering free sausages on sticks ---is designed to bring us in , keep us there , and get us into spending money.

From my own experience , once I enter a supermarket, it' s often not easy for me to get out again. A common feature of supermarkets is the one-way entry door; to get back out, you have to walk through a good portion of the store----with its attractive displays of buyables---to find an exit. I am often subjected to this clever arrangement.

After the one-way front door, the first supermarket feature you encounter is the produce department. There’s a good reason for this: the sensory impact of all those good smells and beautiful colors makes us feel both cheerful and hungry. Similarly the store bakery is usually near the entrance with its delicious smell of fresh-baked bread, as is the flower shop, with its buckets of roses and banks of greenery. The message we get right off the bat is that the supermarket is a welcoming place, fresh, natural, fragrant, and healthy.

Plus, dairy departments are almost invariably located as far from the entrance as possible, ensuring that customersmost of whom will have to walk the length of the store, passing a wealth of tempting products, en route  (在途中)to the milk, cheese, and yogurt. Especially popular items are routinely located in the middle of aisles (过道),so that even the most single-minded buyer has a chance to be attracted by alternatives. Mid-aisle positioning is intended to sideline the so-called Boomerang Effect, in which some shoppers simply head for the item they need , then return the way they came.

So what to do about all this? Make a list and stick to it. Try not to shop so often and don't shop when you' re hungry. And when it comes to supermarket psychology, know what to look for. Forewarned is forearmed.

1What might be unavoidable after the author enters a supermarket?

A.Having difficulty in finding the exit.

B.Getting out with many unintended purchases.

C.Feeling at a loss in front of so many alternatives.

D.Being annoyed by the ladies offering free sausages.

2How does the author introduce the function of the produce department?

A.By quoting an expert. B.By drawing comparisons.

C.By making classifications. D.By following the order of space.

3What does the underlined word"sideline"in Paragraph 4 mean?

    A.Inspire. B.Estimate C.Prevent D.Expand

4What is the best title for the text?

A.Surviving the tricky psychology of the supermarket

B.Reducing your must-buys during grocery shopping

C.Tips on buying cheaper products in supermarkets

D.Things to look for when shopping in supermarkets

  • 27、His interest in Chinese language and characters dates from 1972, when Richard Sears, was a 22-year-old physics major at Portland State University in Oregon. To Sears, the characters were complex with many strokes(笔画)and almost no apparent logic. But when he could get an explanation of a Chinese character’s original meaning and an interpretation of its pictographs (象形文字), it would suddenly become apparent how all the strokes had come to be. “I’m a physicist, so I don’t like blind memorization. I knew that Chinese characters came from pictographs and I wanted to know the stories behind the Chinese characters.”

As he studied, Sears found that many of the explanations were conflicting and even the experts were at odds. He decided to computerize the characters, so that he could separate good opinions from bad ones. He scanned about 96,000 ancient characters and established the database of them.

In 2002 he got his website up and named it Chinese Etymology, where visitors can check for free the development of Chinese characters in various forms, from the original pictographs to the modern simplified forms. The clicks to the website went up to 600,000 in one day. Overnight he became American Uncle Hanzi, a nickname(绰号)given by Chinese netizens.

Besides, he has explained the origin of 15,000 modern characters. For example, the character jia (home) has a rooftop and a pig underneath. In southern China where it rains a lot, people put their houses on stilts(木桩), so if it flooded, the inside of the house would not get wet. So, the pigs live underneath the house.

Last year, Sears set up his studio in Nanjing that focuses on applying AR, animation(动画)and artificial intelligence to tell stories of Chinese culture and character origins. He has made over 60 such videos in English with Chinese subtitles for Bilibili, a video website. “They have both entertainment and educational value,” he says.

In the meantime, Sears has been updating the database. “My philosophy is huo dao lao xue dao lao.”

【1】According to Paragraph 1, why did Sears want to know the stories behind the Chinese characters?

A.To make his life in China much easier.

B.To become an expert at Chinese characters.

C.To solve some related problems in physics.

D.To memorize Chinese characters more easily.

【2】What does “were at odds” in Paragraph 2 mean?

    A.Held different views.

    B.Showed no interest.

    C.Had no doubt at all.

    D.Were under attack.

【3】What did Sears do to tell the stories behind the Chinese characters?

A.He established a database for all the ancient Chinese characters.

B.He built a website about the development of Chinese characters’ forms.

C.He illustrated the structures of 15,000 modern Chinese characters.

D.He set up a studio to make videos about the stories of Chinese history.

【4】What does the passage mainly talk about?

A.Chinese characters catching the world’s wide attention.

B.A Chinese character website established by an American.

C.American Uncle Hanzi devoted to Chinese characters.

D.The secret to language learning — long-lasting interest.

  • 28、   Kieron Graham always knew he had an older brother. His adoption papers, signed and sealed when he was three months old, listed a sibling named Vincent but no last name. Though Kieron spent years thinking about Vincent, he could never track him down.

That changed in December 2017, when Kieron’s adoptive parents gave their four adopted children AncestryDNA tests as Christmas gifts. Kieron, now 21, sent his saliva sample in for analysis. When his results came back, he was stunned to find he had a slew of DNA matches for relatives who had also taken the test. Most were distant connections, but one match was so strong that it was labeled “close family”. His name was Vincent Ghant. Kieron looked for him on Facebook and soon made a possible connection. “This is going to sound so wild … but I think you’re my brother,” Kieron wrote on Facebook’s Messenger app.

“I was given up for adoption in 1997 and it says on my paperwork that my mother has a son with your name and your birth date. Her name is Shawn.”

“OMG do you know your real name?” wrote Vincent, now 30.

    “I think it was Tyler.”

“OMG YES!!! You are my brother.”

    “Wow,” wrote Kieron.

    “This is crazy,” said Vincent.

The craziness was just beginning. As they talked, the brothers realized they lived about 20 minutes from each other, outside of Atlanta. More mind-blowing, they attended the same university and majored and minored in the same subjects: political science and legal studies.

“We were like, what are the odds we’re separated our entire lives and then end up at the same school with the same interests?” says Kieron.

Vincent was nine when Kieron was born and remembers caring for his baby brother. But times were tough, and Shawn, who worked 15-plus hours a day as a nurse, decided that placing Kieron for adoption would give him the best chance to succeed.

Now the brothers had the chance to make up for lost time. They decided to meet at a local tea shop that week. “I was really nervous,” says Kieron. “I was wondering what I should say, what I should do.” As he waited outside the shop, he heard someone call his name, and he suddenly found himself in a hug with the brother he’d thought about his entire life.

The men went inside and talked. “We connected,” says Vincent, “like we already knew each other.”

1The underlined word “mind-blowing” is closest in meaning to “_______”.

    A.desperate B.grateful C.ridiculous D.surprising

2Which of the following statement is true about the two brothers?

A.Kieron was given up for adoption as soon as he was born.

B.They grew in different environment but had a similar educational background.

C.Kieron had met Vincent before as they lived quite close to each other.

D.It was rather difficult for Kieron to track down his own brother after the AncestryDNA test.

3What can be inferred from the passage?

A.Adopted children usually show deeper affection for their birth family.

B.Vincent lives with his mother all the time.

C.Kieron’s mother was unwilling to give him up but she had no choice.

D.The four adopted children have found their birth family after the AncestryDNA tests.

  • 29、   Researchers at Pennsylvania State University chose 45 healthy overweight people who agreed to try three different kinds of diets. Their study appeared on Wednesday in the Journal of the American Heart Association.

One was a lowfat diet that included lots of fruits, lowfat milky products, and small amounts of red meat. The other two were moderatefat diets. That is, the fat they included was not very high or very low. The kinds of foods and meals were similar to the lowfat diet, but they included more nuts and oils. The only difference between the two was the avocado(牛油果) -a pearshaped fruit with a thick green or dark purple skin. One diet included a daily serving of one avocado, and the other diet had the same amount of fat from other sources.

At the end of the study, the researchers found that the avocado diet led to a big, noticeable drop in LDL compared with the other two diets. LDL is the bad kind of cholesterol (胆固醇), which is found in your blood. Too much LDL in your body may cause heart disease.

“I was surprised to see the added advantage of the avocado,” said Penny KrisEtherton, a nutrition scientist at Penn State and the lead author of the study.

She says she’d like to do further research to explain the added drop in LDL in the study groups. It’s possible that the fiber in avocados may play a role in lowering the cholesterol, she says. “In the U.S, most people do not eat an avocado every day because of its high prices. Some people take it with chips,” Penny added.

But one caveat for anyone who loves avocado dip (): When it’s served up with chips, the calories can add up, which is not good to your health. Calories show how much energy food will produce. A half cup of avocado dip has about 200 calories all on its own.

1What can we learn about the three kinds of diets?

A.The lowfat diet mainly included nuts and oils.

B.The avocado diet included three avocados a day.

C.All three diets had totally different kinds of foods.

D.The moderatefat diets probably had milky products.

2The study shows that the avocado ________.

    A.always causes heart disease

    B.makes people put on weight

C.can reduce the level of LDL

D.is a good source of nutrition

3What does the underlined word “caveat” probably mean?

    A.Joke. B.Choice.

    C.Pity. D.Warning.

Rapidly advancing technology and its impact on education has been a subject of debate. How can schools equip students with the skills they need to succeed in a challenging job market?

Since technology is driving these changes, there is a theory that governments should keep focusing on STEM subjects. These are often referred to as “hard skills,” which are 1 in primary school and right through to university level. In the meantime, ‘soft skills’ are being 2.

This is a mistake. Much evidence suggests that soft skills are far more 3 to graduates in the long term. Research from Harvard University on the global job market has shown that STEM- related careers grew strongly between 1989 and 2000 but have slowed down since. In contrast, jobs in the creative industries----the sector probably most 4 with the need for soft skills---are growing rapidly. Soft skills are, in fact, increasingly in demand in the workplace: Google cites creativity, leadership 5 and communication skills as top requirements for both potential and current employees.

So why are soft skills so highly 6 for?

With the rapid evolution of technology, a focus on hard skills leaves students 7 to change, as these often have a short shelf life. According to research by World Economic Forum, more than one in four adults reports a mismatch between their skills and those needed for their job role. If soft skills are taught well, these skills should enable students to adapt to change more easily and progress further in their 8 career.

Of course, technical skills are important. But without the curriculum placing equal--- if not greater --- 9 on soft skills, our education systems are missing a huge trick. Hard skills may help a student get a job in a particular industry, but soft skills will help them disrupt it, achieving a wider 10 in their chosen field.
