21、 More than 5, 000 species of birds manage annual round-trip migrations(迁徙). These journeys can be thousands of miles, with many birds often returning to the exact same nesting and wintering place from year to year.
Migration is very important in the life cycle of birds, and without this annual journey many birds would not be able to raise their young. Birds migrate to find the richest and most abundant food that will provide adequate energy to raise young birds. If no birds migrated, competition for adequate food during breeding(繁殖)seasons would be fierce and many birds would starve.
Of course, not all birds migrate. Some birds can take advantage of different food sources(来源)as seasons change, allowing them to stay in one place all year round. Other birds are better adapted to cold climates with thicker fat reserves and better feathers, and they can survive long cold seasons while they forage for winter food. For more than half the world's birds, however, migration is necessary to stay alive.
When the timing is right for their migrating needs, birds will begin their journey. Food, weather, temperature and illness or injury are several minor aspects that may affect migration by a day or two, but most bird species follow precise migration "schedule". While migration is at its finest during spring and fall, birds migrate all throughout the year. Migration is actually an ongoing process and there are always birds at some stage of their journeys. The distance the birds must fly, the length of time it takes to mate and the amount of young birds all affect when any one species is migrating.
Migratory birds have several changes before the journey. Among them is hyperphagia, the process of migration-related weight gain. As daylight changes and migration times near, a bird's hormone levels will change and they will build a greater fat supply. Besides, old, ragged feathers create more wind drag and air resistance, which requires a bird to use more energy in flight, so many birds replace old feathers with new ones.
【1】Without migration, many birds would .
A.stop reproducing during breeding seasons
B.abandon young birds for lack of food
C.be unable to find places for nesting
D.be in danger of starvation
【2】What does the underlined phrase "forage for" mean in Paragraph 3?
A.Run out of. B.Cut down on.

【3】What can we learn about birds' migration?
A.Most birds begin their journey at the arrival of spring.
B.Warm temperature usually advances it by a day or two.
C.There is almost little migration of birds in winter.
D.Birds' migration is affected by various aspects.
【4】How will migratory birds benefit from the process of hyperphagia?
A.They will tend to use less energy in flight.
B.They will store enough energy for travelling.
C.They will replace old feathers with new ones.
D.They will better sense the changes of daylight.
22、 There are already computer vision systems and sensor-equipped gloves that can detect a person’s hand gestures. Scientists at the University of California, Berkeley have developed an alternative technology, however, that offers some key advantages.
Computer vision systems not only require the users to have their hand clearly visible at all times, but they also raise privacy concerns, particularly if the person's face is visible in the video. Electronic gloves, on the other hand may be clumsy to handle or use and not practical in all situations.
With these limitations in mind, a team of UC Berkeley researchers developed a computer chip-equipped thin-film armband that is wrapped around the user's forearm. That person starts out by performing a number of hand gestures, one at a time. As they do so, electrical sensors in the band detect nerve signals at 64 points within the arm. This data is used to train a custom artificial intelligence-based algorithm(算法) that learns which signal patterns accompany which gestures.
When the user makes one of those gestures later on-or even thinks about doing so-the system is able to determine which one it is, by matching its distinct nerve signal pattern up with one that it’s already learned. It is currently able to recognize 21 different gestures, including a fist, a thumbs-up, a flat hand, holding up individual fingers and counting off numbers.
Importantly, the algorithm automatically updates what it's been taught, so it can compensate for new variables such as sweat on the arm, or the arm being held in an unusual position. Additionally, all of the processing takes place within the chip, so no user data is sent to the cloud.
It is hoped that once developed further, the technology could be utilized in applications such as gesture control of electronic devices, virtual reality, or possibly even the operation of prosthetic(假体的)hands.
【1】What is the disadvantage of the computer vision system?

23、Top chefs aren’t known for their friendly character. Assistants who overcook food by ten seconds usually struggle to get out of the kitchen alive. My father was a top chef. We’d had a stormy relationship for years, but I decided to follow in his footsteps anyway, and train as a chef. It was better than the dead-end I ‘d reach with the job I’d been doing.
After three years, I became head chef in a restaurant called The Tortoise. As the boss, I made important decision but if anything went wrong, I was the one who should take the responsibility. Experiencing the sweaty kitchens, I learned why my father was the way he was. When I began, I didn’t have my sights set on anything much---I just wanted a regular job—but soon I realized my career was taking off. The rich and famous started to visit the restaurant and eventually came the time when I had to decide about my future: I could either open my own restaurant or go and work for one of the big ones. Then life made the decision for me. My father tried and I got his job.
On my first day, I received an unfriendly welcome. No one would talk to me. What made it worse was that I was ill—I had a cold , and my hands were shaking as I went into the kitchen. I held my breath, stood up in front of everyone and said, My name is Leah Kleist. You all know my father. whether you loved him or hated him, I don’t care. He is the past. Now let’s get to work. And we did.

24、Most of the new diseases we humans have faced in the past several decades have come from animals. The more we come into contact with wild animals, the more we risk a so-called disease “spillover” from animals to humans.
“As people move and wildlife move in response to a changing environment, humans and wildlife and animals will come in contact more regularly,” said Jeanne Fair from the Los Alamos National Laboratory in New Mexico. Fair argues that by shifting animal habitats, climate change will also make the opportunities for disease spillover more frequent. “Everything is sort of shifting and will shift into the future as the environment changes through climate change,” Fair said.
Scientists, including climatologists and epidemiologists (流行病学家) on Fair’s team at Los Alamos, are beginning to model how changes to the climate will impact the spread of infectious diseases. It’s early days for this kind of research, but previous studies suggest that extreme weather has already played a role in at least one outbreak. Scientists say drought and deforestation have combined to force bats out of rain forests and into orchards (果园) in Malaysia to find food. Those bats, a common disease reservoir, then passed the Nipah virus through pigs to humans for the first time in the late 1990s.
“We’re going by the past data to really predict what’s going to happen in the future,” Fair said, “And so, anytime you increase that wildlife-human interface, that’s sort of an emerging disease hot spot. And so, that’s just increasing as we go forward.”
Jeffrey Shaman, head of the climate and health program at Columbia University’s public health school, argues we don’t yet know whether climate change will cause a net increase in infectious disease rates globally. For example, mosquitoes carry disease that affects millions of people across the world every year. As their habitats expand in some parts of the world, they might contract diseases elsewhere. Shaman says what we know for certain about climate change is that it will make it harder to predict where disease outbreaks will pop up.
