二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、Six-year-old Alice is building a magical kingdom brick by brick, imagining fairy-tale castles and fire-breathing dragons. This fantasy is helping her take first steps towards creativity. Minutes later, when she is playing board games with her brother, she’s learning to follow rules and take turns with a partner. Although she isn’t aware of it, this will play an important role in her adult life.

“Play in all its rich variety is one of the highest achievements of the human species,M says Dr. David Whitebread from the University of Cambridge. He’s also mindful of the worldwide decline of play. ”The opportunities for free play, which I experienced almost every day of my childhood, are becoming increasingly scarce now.He says. Outdoor play is restricted by parents’ perceptions of risk to do with traffic, as well as their increased wish to protect their children from being the victims of crime, and by their emphasis on “earlier is better” which is leading to greater competition in academic learning and schools.

Many researchers highlight play’s role in children’s development. Dr. Gibson said, “Playful behavior is an important indicator of healthy social development. In my previous research, I investigated how observing children at play can give us important clues about their well-being?” In Baker’s study, she found that preschoolers with greater self-control solved problems more quickly. Giving children the chance to play will make them more successful problem-solvers in the long run.

Whitebread’s recent research has involved developing a play-based approach to supporting children's writing. “Many primary school children find writing difficult, but we have shown that a playful stimulus (激励因素)was far more effective than an instructional one. Children can write longer and better-structured stories when they first play with dolls representing characters in the story.

Somehow the importance of play has been lost in recent decades. It’s regarded as something insignificant, or even as something negative that contrasts with “work”. Let’s not lose sight of its benefits, and the fundamental contributions it makes to human achievements in the arts, sciences and technology. Let’s make sure children have a rich diet of play experiences.

【1】What is the purpose of the first paragraph?

A.To illustrate the benefits of too much spare time.

B.To describe a kid’s peaceful and happy childhood.

C.To present the importance of a rich variety of play.

D.To introduce the distinctive functions of different toys.

【2】According to paragraph 2, outdoor playing is declining probably because parents ___________.

A.show concern over traffic jam on the way to play

B.worry their kids will fall victim to being cheated

C.perceive play as the opposite side of hard work

D.attach importance to academic learning in advance

【3】What has Dr. Whitebread's recent research found out?

A.Children with greater self-control solve problems fester,

B.Children at play often show hints about their well-being.

C.Students write better when they integrate work with play.

D.Play promotes healthy social and emotional development.

【4】How does the author feel about current people's awareness of play?

    A.Indifferent.

    B.Concerned.

    C.Inspired.

    D.Satisfied.

  • 22、   In this age of Internet chat, videogames and reality television, there is no shortage of mindless activities to keep a child occupied. Yet,despite the competition,my -year-old daughter Rebecca wants to spend her leisure time writing short stories. She wants to enter one of her stories into a writing contest,a competition she won last year.

As a writer I know about winning contests, and about losing them. I know what it is like to work hard on a story only to receive a rejection slip from the publisher. I also know the pressures of trying to live up to a reputation created by previous victories. What if she doesn't win the contest again? That's the strange thing about being a parent.

So many of our own past scars and dashed hopes can surface.

A revelation(启示)came last week when I asked her, " Don't you want to win again" No," she replied," I just want to tell the story of an angel going to first grade. "

I had just spent weeks correcting her stories as she spontaneously(自发地) told them. Telling myself that I was merely an experienced writer guiding the young writer across the hall,I offered suggestions for characters, conflicts and endings for her tales. The story about a fearful angel starting first grade was quickly "guided" by me into the tale of a little girl with a wild imagination taking her first music lesson. I had turned her contest into my contest without even realizing it.

Staying back and giving kids space to grow is not as easy as it looks. Because I know very little about farm animals who use tools or angels who go to first grade,I had to accept the fact that I was co-opting(借用)my daughter's experience.

While stepping back was difficult for me,it was certainly a good first step that I will quickly follow with more steps, putting myself far enough a way to give her room but close enough to help if asked. All the while I will be reminding myself that children need room to experiment grow and find their own voices.

1What do we learn from the first paragraph

A.A lot of distractions compete for children's time nowadays.

B.Children do find lots of fun in many mindless activities.

C.Rebecca is much too occupied to enjoy her leisure time.

D.Rebecca draws on a lot of online materials for her writing.

2What did the author say about her own writing experience

A.She was constantly under pressure of writing more.

B.Most of her stories had been rejected by publishers.

C.She did not quite live up to her reputation as a writer.

D.Her way to success was full of pains and frustrations.

3Why did Rebecca want to enter this year's writing contest

A.She had won a prize in the previous contest.

B.She wanted to share her stories with readers.

C.She was sure of winning with her mother's help.

D.She believed she possessed real talent for writing.

  • 23、   Read the following passage about four apps.

    1. Start Walking Path

This app was created by the American Heart Association to encourage people to walk more to stay fit. It makes it easy for you to find or create and then share nice walks wherever you are. For example, imagine you take a walk through a park on your way home from work one day. You can map your walk using this app and share it with your friends and coworkers so they can enjoy it too. Or you can search a new area to see if anyone else has posted a nice walk.

    2. Weigh What Matters.

This app was created by the American Medical Association to make it easy for patients to set healthy goals and then keep track of their progress. The app tracks three areas: weight, nutrition, and physical activity. Users record what they weight, what they eat, and how much exercise they get. From this information, a progress report is created and emailed to the patient’s doctor. If patients are not getting enough exercise, their doctors can encourage them to work out more often.

Here’s how it works. You places your phone on your bed, near your pillow. Then just go to sleep—you phone keeps track of your movement and breathing during the night. It records this information in an easy-to- read graph that shows you how much you move and how often and when you wake up during the night. It also choose the best time to wake you up so that you have a peaceful start to your day.

  • 24、   United States health officials say an estimated 80,000 people died of influenza (流感) and problems resulting from the flu last winter, making it the worst season since 1977. The director for the U.S.Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reported the number to The Associated Press. Health experts were expecting the winter of 2017-2018 to be a bad year for flu deaths, but not that.

Doctor William Schaffner is an expert on vaccines,  at Vanderbilt University in Tennessee. Schaffner noted that 80,000 deaths are nearly twice as much as what health officials once considered a “bad year”.

CDC officials say that between 12,000 and 56,000 Americans die every year from flu-related causes, but they do not have an exact count of how many people die from the flu each year. Influenza is a relatively common disease and not always listed on death records as the official cause of death. While last winter was a bad flu season in the U.S., it was not the worst. The 1918 flu lasted nearly two years. Historians estimate that the disease was to blame for between 500,000 to 700,000 deaths during that period. The exact number is still not known.

One thing that made the 2017-2018 flu season so bad was that the flu virus was strong. Usually the disease kills the very young, the very old or those who are already sick. However, last winter, the flu killed many healthy Americans. Another thing that made the flu season so deadly was that the flu vaccine was not as effective as experts had predicted. Drug makers have made changes to the vaccine. Even though the vaccine did not work well last year, health experts still strongly suggest getting vaccinated.

1What can we learn about influenza in the first paragraph?

A.The winter of 2017-2018 saw the deadliest flu in history.

B.Effective cures should be found to deal with influenza.

C.Health experts had assumed flu would be severer.

D.More people died of influenza than expected in the winter of 2017-2018.

2How many deaths did the health officials expect in a bad year?

    A.80,000. B.40,000.

    C.60,000. D.20,000.

3Why can't CDC officials give an exact number of deaths from flu?

A.Because flu is always considered as a common disease.

B.Because people usually don't take flu seriously.

C.Because CDC officials are unwilling to count the deaths.

D.Because flu is not always listed on death records.

4What do experts recommend people to do in the last paragraph?

A.Change the vaccine. B.Avoid using vaccine.

C.Get vaccinated. D.Do research on vaccine.
