二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、 Nobody likes an old poop(傻子). Developing a sense of humor is part of becoming a mature, emotionally healthy individual. Laughter is good for the soul, builds friendships and relieves stress. It serves as the glue for social situations and as an ice-breaker for sadness and boredom. If you’ve ever been told to “lighten up” or “chill out”, you should save the blue attitude for serious situations and develop your sense of humor.

Forgive the accidental. A sudden fall is humorous not because we like to see people fall, but because it surprises. From a spilled(溢出)water glass in a meeting to Aunt Rae’s teeth coming off in the Thanksgiving turkey, the embarrassment of accidents can be relieved by humor and a helping hand. After making sure that nobody’s hurt, forgive accidents with a chuckle(咯咯地笑)rather than a scolding.

Look for the unexpected. The kid who used to look at you with his eyes closed during a test had the idea. Parents who serve green eggs and ham to their children on graduation day get the idea. Unexpected actions lighten an atmosphere and relax people.

Learn to laugh with your kids. Most of what children say and do is funny. Help them learn that accidents are sometimes funny and sometimes occasions for joining in and helping another human being. By sharing laughs and attempting to explain humor, you develop your sense of humor, as well as help kids develop their own sense of humor.

【1】If you’ve ever been told to “lighten up” or “chill out”, it means ______.

    A. you are humorous   B. you are blue

    C. you lack humor   D. you are funny

【2】According to Paragraph 2, when your friend falls, you can ______.

    A. laugh at him   B. chuckle

    C. scold him     D. feel embarrassed

【3】 In the author’s opinion, if your mother serves green eggs and hum to you on your graduation day, she is ______.

    A. boring   B. serious   C. considerate D. humorous

【4】What is the best title for the passage?

    A. How to Develop a Sense of Humor

    B. Ways to Become a Healthy Individual

    C. The Function of Humor

    D. Proper Attitudes Toward Humor

  • 22、A plant swap is the perfect way to thin out some additional plants you have, while acquiring some brand-new ones to enjoy at the same time. Not only will you swap plants, but you’ll trade information about plant care. 【1】Here are some suggestions on how to organize a plant swap.

Prepare a place to host. A backyard is the ideal, casual area. Set up tables for every one of the plants and add some easy decoration to them. 【4】 Once you have the location ready, you can talk to the visitors about selecting the best date and time for the event.

Enjoy the swap. When all visitors arrive, let them arrange their plants on the tables and socialize. • 23、In recent years, a lot of “business thinking” books have been published, all of which search for new answers on how to run organizations effectively. Obliquity tells us that the most profitable companies are not the most aggressive in chasing profits. Wikinomics demonstrates new models of production based on community and collaboration. Peter Miller’s new book, Smart Swarm, however, challenge leaders to think differently. He studied creatures, like bees and ants and he found their habits, actions and instincts can be applied to business. Miller believes his book is the first time anyone has explained the science behind management theory. “The examples of how ant colonies (蚁群) or beehives (蜂窝) work are appealing models for organizations and systems that can be applied in a business context,” he says.

So how exactly can bees help run organizations? “By the way they work independently before they work together,” Miller says. “Picture a huge beehive hanging on a tree, with about 5,000 bees competing for space. They know their population is getting too big, leaving them unsafe. They must all agree to find a new home. In today’s business environment, managers need to be able to make the right decisions under intense pressure. Yet, it is clear that some of the best-paid leaders in some of the biggest organizations can get it dramatically wrong. How is it that they can fail to make efficient business decisions when a large group of bees can make a critical decision about their hive in just a few seconds?”

According to Miller, “swarm theory” can help managers in three simple steps: discover, test and evaluate. The bees first realize they have a problem. They then fly into the neighborhood to find potential new sites. They come back and perform a “dance” to get other bees to follow them. Eventually, the bees with the best dance attract the most votes – and a decision is made. Miller says. “The bee example tells you that you need to seek out diversity in your team. You need to have a way of gathering up quite different ideas so you can make sure you pick the right one.”

Ants, in addition, can help businesses organize workflow and people. In an ant colony, there is no leader. Ants are self-organized, and respond to their environment and each other. One ant on its own could not raid (袭击) a kitchen cupboard, but one ant telling the next one that it’s worth following him to find food ends up creating a food chain. “In an ant colony, you get the right number going in and out searching for food, you get the right number taking care of the babies,” Miller says. “As a manager, this can tell you that your hierarchy (等级制度) is getting in the way of getting the work done.”

【1】Miller believes his book differs from other “business thinking” books because ________.

    A.it focuses on maximizing profits

B.it supports the theory with evidence

C.it corrects faults in similar books

    D.it justifies the previous theory

【2】In the second paragraph, the author indicates that the behavior of bees can show managers how to ________.

A.make up for wrongly made decisions

B.justify exactly what the real problem is

    C.draw the correct conclusions quickly

D.keep the team safe under great pressure

【3】According to the “swarm theory”, managers need to ________.

    A.regard decision-making as a cooperative process

B.persuade others to follow your ways of thinking

C.accept different ideas and keep them balanced

D.pick out a right person to make the final decision

【4】Which of the following can be inferred from the last paragraph?

A.Leadership skills can be developed through practical work.

B.Employees work more efficiently when organized by leaders.

C.Strengthened hierarchy is the guarantee of work efficiency.

D.Employees should be allowed to make their own decisions.

  • 24、Linda Brown is a softly-spoken realtor (房地产经纪人) with a passion for helping the homeless. She’s moving mountains by combining her understanding of real estate (房地产) with her kindness-fueled determination to create beautiful permanent homes for disabled homeless people in her community.

In 2020, Mrs. Brown was awarded the Good Neighbor Award. This honor is initiated by The National Association of Realtors in the US. As its website details, working alongside her husband, Dr. David Brown, she has been transforming abandoned mobile homes into villages of tiny homes that offer permanent housing for homeless people who’re disabled.

The wish to help homeless people, and restore their dignity and self-worth, as Mrs. Brown explains, had been a joint mission for some years. As local blogger Aaron Nichols shares, the couple ran a local evening drop-in center for local homeless people called Gardening Tree, for almost a decade. This functioned as a shelter where people experiencing homelessness could grab a bite, shower, do laundry and relax.

But they wanted to do more than that. With local individual organizations’ help, the couple succeeded in raising almost $5 million, which enabled them to transform unused mobile homes and a deserted trailer park into a small village of tiny homes that opened in 2018. They named the shelter “Eden Village”.

As Mrs. Brown revealed in her award acceptance speech about her journey to creating Eden Village, helping homeless people is something personal, “I watched as my homeless friends walked off into the darkness to a hidden, wet and cold camp while we went home to a warm bed. I had to do something.”

Today, Eden Village includes a 4,000-square-foot community center offering cooking and laundry facilities, as well as a medical center and community gardens. Additionally, more sites are being developed thanks to the land donated to the nonprofit founded by the Browns. Eden Village 2 and 3 are at the planning stage. In the next six years, Mrs. Brown hopes to create five similar villages housing up to 200 people experiencing homelessness.

【1】How does the author introduce the couple’s devotion to helping the homeless?

    A.By mentioning local realtors’ praise.

B.By referring to related online descriptions.

    C.By recording homeless people’s evaluations.

D.By detailing their interaction with the homeless.

【2】What else plays a role in building Eden Village besides the couple’s devotion?

    A.Homeless people’s requests.

    B.Official favorable policies.

    C.The support from the society.

    D.The prize from many associations.

【3】Why is Mrs. Brown’s award acceptance speech mentioned in paragraph 5?

A.To express her sympathy for her friends.

B.To highlight the influence of the village.

C.To show her sincere gratitude for the award.

D.To give her reason for setting up the village.

【4】What can we learn about the couple’s project?

    A.It is still a concept.

    B.It keeps expanding.

    C.It is carried out globally.

    D.It lacks future plans.
