  • 21、Students and Technology in the Classroom

I live my blackberry—it’s my little connection to be larger world that can go anywhere with me. I also love my laptop computer, as it holds all of my writing and thoughts. Despite this love of technology, I know that there are times when I need to move away from these devices(设备)and truly communicate with others.

On occasion, I teach a course called History Matters for a group of higher education managers. My goals for the class include a full discussion of historical themes and ideas. Because I want students to thoroughly study the material and exchange their ideas with each other in the classroom, I have a rule—no laptop, iPads, phones, etc. When students were told my rule in advance of the class, some of them were not happy.

Most students assume that my reasons for this rule include unpleasant experiences in the past with students misusing technology. There’s a bit of truth to that. Some students assume that I am anti-technology. There’s no truth in that at all. I love technology and try to keep up with it so I can relate to my students.

The real reason why I ask students to leave technology at the door is that I think there are very few places in which we can have deep conversations and truly engage complex ideas. Interruptions by technology often break concentration and allow for too much dependence on outside information for ideas. I want students to dig deep within themselves for inspiration and ideas. I want them to push each other to think differently and make connections between the course the material and the class discussion.

I’ve been teaching my history class in this way for many years and the evaluations reflect student satisfaction with the environment that I create. Students realize that with deep conversation and challenge, they learn that a level that helps them keep the course material beyond the classroom.

I’m not saying that I won’t ever change my mind about technology use in my history class, but until I hear a really good reason for the change. I’m sticking to my plan. A few hours of technology-free dialogue is just too sweet to give up.

1Some of the students in the history class were unhappy with ________.

    A. the course material   B. others’ misuse of technology

    C. discussion topics   D. the author’s class regulations

2The underlined word “engage” in para. 4 probably means ________.

    A. explore   B. accept

    C. change   D. reject

3It can be inferred from the last paragraph that the author ________.

    A. is quite stubborn

    B. will give up teaching history

    C. will change his teaching plan soon

    D. values technology-free dialogues in his class

  • 22、Nearly one year after the arrival of the COVID-19 pandemic, students across Chicago and the suburbs in the US say when it comes to high school, the thrill is gone. Simple pleasures such as getting together with friends in the hallways and catching up over lunch in the cafeteria are displaced by a dystopian (反乌托邦的) landscape of remote learning and virtual extracurricular.

After 11 months of remote learning, and what many teens describe as the soul-crushing disappointment of canceled after school activities, experts say a growing number of teens are now struggling with anxiety and depression due to heightened levels of stress and social isolation.

Still, the following stories shared by high school students from Chicago and the suburbs provide a glimmer of hope that for some, the pandemic-era heartbreak might develop a generation of resilient (有韧性的) young adults who will be better equipped to deal with life’s twists and turns.

Students who participate in speech, an activity that combines drama and public speaking, have been able to continue this school year, albeit (尽管) over the internet. Instead of delivering emotional monologues (独白) and duets (二重唱) to a live panel of judges, they must summon their best performances while looking into a webcam.

“Dueting is so frustrating when it comes to online,” said Jaylah Hogg, 17, a junior at Thornton Township High School in Harvey. “Wi-Fi at my house is pretty good but my partner’s isn’t. So it’s like I’m trying to time her lines in my head because she’s blanking out when she’s talking. Sometimes the judges do hold that against us.”

But it hasn’t been all bad. After nearly a year of remote learning, Deerfield High School freshman Ben Segall, 15, said he was excited that the school was expected to finally welcome students back into the building for a hybrid program later this month.

The pandemic has also crushed the athletic seasons for sports at many high schools including Senn High School in the Edgewater neighborhood. There, Davion Holmes is staying focused on applying to Wilberforce, Ohio-based Central State University.

And with some of the recent updates to the Illinois High School Association’s COVID-19 guidelines, Holmes said he remained hopeful, albeit realistic, about finally resuming his high school athletic career in the months ahead.

“I didn’t want to have to live through a pandemic, but I worked through it, and that’s something I’ll be able to tell my kids and grandkids someday,” he added.

【1】What is a major problem with remote learning?

    A.The heavy workload.

    B.The lack of social interaction.

C.The large number of students in class.

D.The high levels of stress in class.

【2】Why did Jaylah Hogg find online dueting frustrating?

A.The Wi-Fi at her house was dissatisfactory.

B.It was hard to work as a team online.

C.The judges failed to do their job well.

D.She felt nervous in front of the webcam.

【3】What does Davion Holmes think of the pandemic?

A.It allowed him to focus on applying to universities.

B.It made little difference to his athletic career.

C.It is something that has made him stronger.

D.It’s the last thing he wants to mention in the future.

【4】What’s the main purpose of the article?

A.To describe the pandemic’s influence on teens.

B.To present different views on the pandemic.

C.To call for attention to students’ mental health.

D.To encourage teens to be positive toward school life.

【5】What is the best title of the passage?

    A.Athletic Career

    B.Monologues and Duets

    C.Best Performances

    D.Adapting to Change

  • 23、   It was unusually quiet in the emergency room on December 25. I didn't think there would be any patients, sighing about having to work on Christmas. Just then five bodies showed up at my desk, a pale woman and four small children.

“Are you all sick?” I asked doubtfully.

“Yes,” she said weakly and lowered her head.

But when it came to descriptions of their presenting problems, things got a little vague. Two of the children had headachesbut the headaches weren't accompanied by the normal body language of holding the head or trying to keep it still. Two children had earaches but only one could tell me which ear was affected. The mother complained of a cough but seemed to work to produce it.

Something was wrong, but I didn't say anything but explained that it might be a little while before a doctor saw her. She respondedTake your time; it's warm in here.”

On a hunch (直觉)I checked the chart after the admitting clerk had finished registering the family. No address— they were homeless. The waiting room was warm.

I looked out at the family huddled by the Christmas tree. The littlest one was pointing at the television and saying something loudly and excitedly to her mother. The oldest one was looking at an ornament on the Christmas tree.

I went back to the nurses' station and mentioned we had a homeless family in the waiting room. The nurses, complaining about working Christmas, turned to compassion for a family just trying to get warm on Christmas. The team went into actionmuch as we do when there's a medical emergency. But this one was a Christmas emergency.

We were all offered a free meal in the hospital cafeteria on Christmas Dayso we claimed that meal and prepared a banquet for our Christmas guests. As seriously as we met the physical needs of the patients that came to us that day our team worked to meet the needs, and exceed the expectations, of a family who just wanted to be warm on Christmas Day. Lateras the family walked to the door to leave, the four year -old came running back, gave me a hug and whispered, "Thanks for being our angels today.”

1What did the author learn from the family s descriptions of presenting problems?

A.Two of the children had headaches.

B.One of the children had earaches.

C.The mother pretended to be coughing.

D.The whole family were seriously ill.

2The author made sure that the family were homeless by ______.

    A.asking them some questions

    B.listening to their introduction

    C.observing their facial expressions

    D.checking their registration information

3After knowing about the homeless family, the nurses ______.

    A.gave them a medical treatment

B.provided them with a big dinner

C.prepared a Christmas tree for them

D.held a big Christmas party for them

4What can be the best title for the text?

    A.An Unusual Christmas Emergency

B.Warm hearted and Beautiful Nurse Angels

C.Having Christmas Together With a Poor Family

D.Receiving Special Christmas Guests in the Waiting Room

  • 24、   Liu Jichen, founder and CEO of Clear Plate®, designed a mini-program that recognizes empty plates and rewards users with points. These points can be exchanged for gifts like books and cellphones, or better yet, they can be used to purchase charity meals donated to poor children in rural areas of China.

In 2016, Liu, a then student of Tsinghua University, noticed a popular campaign called “Leftover Party”, where people brought their leftovers to eat together, intending to raise awareness of food waste. Liu and his classmates organized one such event, which was attended by hundreds of people. The success encouraged him to spread the concept of reducing food waste to a wider audience.

The idea of a mini-program struck him at a dinner in 2017 when Liu dined at a restaurant, which rewarded diners who finished off their food. Liu found that the restaurant would give these diners a card every time and offer them small gifts when they collected a certain number of cards. “Everyone who values food can enjoy a sense of gain at a lower cost,” Liu said, noting that such an idea could be realized online.

He formed a team to work on the project. Yet it was quite a challenge for the AI system to identify the uploaded photos. Liu and his team, assisted by more than 1,000 others, spent half a year collecting over 100,000 samples across the country to train the digital brain.

“There were so many uncertainties in research and development. For our team members, the biggest challenge was whether we were confident enough to complete it,” Liu said. They not only achieved their goal, but now, the mini-program has more than five million registered users. “We hope to inspire everyone to take action against food waste and to contribute Chinese wisdom and solutions to global food security challenges,” he added.

【1】What inspired Liu Jichen to create the mini-program?

    A.A restaurant’s practice.

    B.His interest in high tech.

    A.To increase awareness of charity.

B.To encourage people to save food.

C.To collect photos of empty plates.

D.To promote books and other gifts.

    A.Generous and optimistic.

    C.Determined and responsible.
