二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、Research has shown that disrupting one's natural “morning lark” (早起鸟) or “night owl” (夜猫子) tendency can result in immoral behavior at work.

Who doesn't love a flexible work schedule? Being able to make your own hours, come in when you're ready and leave when you're done, step out to attend a child's presentation at school, have a midday appointment, or even squeeze in a quick workout or nap as a guaranteed pick-me-up — flexibility greatly improves one's quality of life.

The benefits don't stop there, however. Research has shown that having flexible work hours actually makes one a better person. How so? It's been found that disrupted sleep patterns —in the form of having to act outside of your normal inclination to be a morning “lark” or a night “owl” — can result in strange, unethical, and out-of-line behavior.

Science journalist Linda Geddes said, “If you don't get enough sleep, research suggests you are more likely to have unethical behavior, such as being mean, bullying your fellow employees or falsifying receipts. But it's not just owls: the larks tend to behave more unethically in the evening, and owls in the morning. So ideally, you want to introduce flexible working."

Employers would be wise to allow their employees to start whenever they feel ready — whether it's at the crack of dawn or at 11 a.m., and to allow breaks or pauses in the day as needed — because that would mean better productivity, performance, and behavior.

This shift is already happening, with the New York Times recently reporting that 27 percent of US employers now offer the flexibility to work outside normal business hours, up from 22 percent in 2014; and 68 percent allow telecommuting as needed (up from 54 percent in 2014). With the national unemployment rate at its lowest in 50 years, employers are having to become more competitive in what they offer workers, and flex-hours seem like a no-brainer, highly beneficial to all.

【1】What is mainly talked about in Paragraph 2?

    A.Ways to improve life quality.

B.People's activities in their free time.

C.Methods to get a flexible work schedule.

D.The advantages of flexibility in work time.

【2】What does the underlined word “inclination” in Paragraph 3 probably mean?

    A.Judgment.

    B.Tendency.

    C.Reaction.

    D.Choice.

【3】What is the effect to change people's sleep pattern according to Geddes?

A.They will show their nature more easily.

B.They tend to suffer from sleep problems.

C.They tend to behave immorally in their work.

D.They will get more flexibility in working time.

【4】What do the figures in the last paragraph indicate?

    A.The unemployment rate is increasing.

B.Employers are getting more free time.

C.Flexible working has been creating more jobs.

D.More employers adopt a flexible work schedule.

  • 22、   Sharp drops in temperatures, strong winds howling...A cold snap (寒流) has struck many parts of China.

The National Meteorological Centre ( NMC) (国家气象中心) issued an orange alert on Dec. 28, as a cold air mass swept across the country from north to south. This is the first orange warning since 2016, which is the highest in the three-tier (三级的) ranking, followed by yellow and blue.

On Dec. 27, the temperature in the Greater Hinggan Mountains of Heilongjiang province fell to-44. 5℃, the lowest since winter began, the region's meteorological service said.

According to Sun Jun, the chief forecaster from the NMC, this round of the cold wave is tougher than the same period in normal years. Temperatures in more than 25 cities could reach record lows. Even in Hunan and Jiangxi provinces, temperatures have reached subzero.

Since early December, China has reported power squeezes in the provinces of Hunan, Jiangxi and Zhejiang. Street lamps in several cities have not been on. Elevators in some office buildings haven't worked. The central air conditioning in malls, libraries and government buildings has been off for several days, Xinhua reported.

According to the National Development of Reform Commission ( NDRC) ( 国家发展改革委员会),the power cuts in these provinces are a result of the dramatic increase of demand for electricity fueled by the high demand of industries that have now recovered and are keen to make up for the lost time earlier in the year and the low temperatures.

Meanwhile, domestic needs for electricity also surged. For instance, in Hunan, low temperatures came at least one month earlier than usual in the province this year. Millions of people started using space heaters to deal with the cold weather.

In order to help people get through these conditions, China is increasing its supply of natural gas and coal to ensure its power generation and heating needs, according to the NDRC. Major coal producers in the provinces of Shanxi and Shaanxi have been instructed. to boost production capacity and coal imports. The NDRC has ordered power plants to have coal reserves for at least 18 days. It would also guarantee the power support to regions in Hunan and Jiangxi, which are short of the supply of coal.

  • 23、According to the Living Planet Index, which has been in existence for five decades, animal populations across the world decreased by an average of 69% between 1970 and 2018.

Not all animal populations decreased, and some parts of the world saw greater changes than others. But experts say the sharp loss of biodiversity is a worrying sign of what’s to come for the natural world.

According to the report’s authors, the main cause of biodiversity loss is land-use changes driven by human activity, such as industry development, energy production and deforestation (毁林).

But the report suggests that climate change — which is already showing wide-ranging effects on plant and animal species globally —will become the leading cause of biodiversity loss if rising temperatures aren’t limited to 1.5 C.

“The message is clear and the lights are flashing red,” said WEF International Director General Marco Lambertini.

Lambertini said the biodiversity loss and climate change are already responsible for a series of problems for humans, including death and displacement from extreme weather, a lack of access to food and water and an increase in the spread of some diseases.

He said world leaders: gathering at the U.N. Biodiversity Conference in Montreal in December should take major steps to change environmental damage.

“This is the last chance we will get. By the end of this decade we will know whether this plan was enough or not; the fight for people and nature will have been won or lost,” Lambertini said. “The signs are not good. Discussions so far are locked in old-world thinking and fixed positions, with no sign of the active action needed to achieve a nature-positive future.”

The report calculated the average change in the “relative abundance” of 31,821 wildlife populations representing 5,230 species. Latin America and the Caribbean saw a decline 94% average population loss and Africa saw a 66% decline, while North America experienced only a 20% drop and Europe and central Asia saw its wildlife populations decreased by 18%.

The WWF said the difference could be due to the fact that much of the development in North America and Europe occurred before 1970, when the data on biodiversity loss started.

【1】What is the major reason for biodiversity loss?

    A.The global eh-mate warming.

B.The shift in the use of land.

    C.The human beings’ illegal hunting.

    D.The occurrence of natural disaster.

【2】What is Lambertini’s attitude toward the animals’ current condition?

    A.Indifferent.

    B.Tolerant.

    C.Optimistic.

    D.Concerned.

【3】What does Lambertini expect the world leaders to do according to the text?

    A.Hold a meeting to discuss.

    B.Continue the original plan.

    C.Take new and active measures.

    D.Exchange ideas among countries.

【4】What is mainly talked about in the text?

    A.Humans are harming natural resources.

    B.Biodiversity is dropping greatly

C.The climate is getting increasingly worse.

D.The deforestation is showing its bad effect.
