二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、   15 years ago, Erin Merryn met a kitten who needed a home when she was a college student.

He jumped into her arms and refused to let her go.

“I was attached immediately and decided that I would take a risk and try hiding a kitten in my college dorm where animals are obviously not allowed,” Erin recalled.

A week later she was caught and given 48 hours to remove the cat. After several phone calls, Erin was able to find an old lady to take Bailey, the kitten. But Bailey did not get along with his new housemate. As soon as Erin learned that he would be sent away, she immediately offered to take him back. “I plotted for a month to convince my parents to let me keep him.” said Erin.

Six years ago, Erin had Abby, her beautiful daughter. She didn’t know what Bailey would think about the new addition when she brought her home from the hospital.

“But it was love at first sight.” Erin said. Bailey stayed by Abby’s side, guarding and showering her with love and purrs. As Abby grew, he became her protective brother, watching over her every step of the way. Abby picked up a book one day and tried to read it with Bailey  by her side. He became her perfect audience, and the sweet boy was completely attracted by Abby as she told him stories of wonder.

  • 22、The teacher who did the most to encourage me was , as it happened , my aunt . She was Myrtle C . Manigault , the wife of my mother’s brother Bill . She taught in second grade at all-black Summer School in Camden , New Jersey . During my childhood and youth , Aunt Myrtle encouraged me to develop every aspect of my potential , without regard for what was considered practical or possible for black females . I liked to sing ; she listened to my voice and pronounced it good . I couldn’t dance ; she taught me the basic dancing steps . She took me to the theatre—not just children’s theatre but adult comedies and dramas—and her faith that I could appreciate adult plays was not disappointed .

Most important , perhaps , Aunt Myrtle provided my first opportunity to write for publication . A writer herself for one of the black newspapers , she suggested my name to the editor as a youth columnist . My column , begun when I was fourteen , was supposed to cover teenage social activities—and it did—but it also gave me the freedom to write on many other subjects as well as the habit of gathering material , the discipline of meeting deadlines , and , after graduation from college six years later , a solid collection of published material that carried my name and was my passport to a series of writing jobs .

Today Aunt Myrtle it still an enthusiastic supporter of her favorite niece . Like a diamond , she has reflected a bright , multifaceted(多面的)image of possibilities to every pupil who has crossed her path .

Supermarket packaging often contains common English words that are oddly confusing. Here’s what you need to know to safeguard your health.

    Imitation

A food that simulates another food but isn’t made of the same stuff is an imitation, right? Not quite. It should be labeled imitation only if it has a lower amount of protein or some other essential nutrient than the food it’s copying.

    Free

Packages bearing the words fat-, sugar-, or sodium-free may still contain trace amounts of those substances. The FDA evaluates these terms according to a typical portion size known as an RACC (reference amounts customarily consumed per eating occasion). An RACC of eggnog, for example, is a half cup, and for croutons, it’s 7 g. To be labeled free of calories, a food should have fewer than 5 calories per RACC; to qualify as fat- or sugar free, less than 0.5 g per RACC; and to be labeled sodium-free, fewer than 5 mg per RACC.

    Reduced/Less

Don’t be fooled: Just because a product claims to have reduced fat or to contain less sugar doesn’t mean it’s low in the stuff you should avoid in excess(过量). Such terms just mean the amount is lower than usual; the food might not meet the standard for low at all. These phrases indicate a relational claim compared with a reference food. The reduced substance (for example, total fat, sugar, etc.) should be at least 25 percent less per RACC than the amount in an appropriate reference food.

1According to the passage, the food should be labeled __________.

A.imitation when it has as much essential nutrient as the copied food

B.sugar free if the sugar is fewer than 5 mg per RACC

C.reduced fat if it is indeed low in the stuff you should avoid in excess

D.reduced sugar if it is 30 % less per RACC than the amount in the reference food

2The passage is intended to __________.

    A.explain some words on packaging

B.remind us of tricky words on food labels

C.suggest ways to protect your health consciously

D.point out mistaken labels requiring to be improved

  • 24、When the need for information technology service arises, it can be a stressful moment—the user is locked out of their computer, or a program isn’t working properly. But if you ask anyone in the MIT departments of Chemistry and Physics, or the News Office—the Institute divisions that are fortunate enough to have Greg Walton as their IT service provider, they’ll acknowledge that not only is Walton the best, but whatever the issue is, he will see it through until all involved are satisfied with the outcome. Walton usually arrives on the scene with endless positive energy that transforms a technical annoyance into an enjoyable interaction, regardless of how many other IT fires he has already put out that day.

The qualities that make him a star employee extend far beyond the campus. After spending his early years in foster care, Walton lived with his great-grandmother, but mostly, he was left to support himself. While many children might, understandably, lie flat under such unsupervised circumstances, Walton excelled academically and athletically at high school. He became the first person in his family to graduate from high school, and enrolled in college.

Walton seized the chance to enroll in Year Up, a program aiming to close the “opportunity divide” by providing young adults with the skills, experience, and support that will empower them to reach their potential through professional careers and higher education. Walton remains an active ambassador for the organization.

In June of 2007,armed with shining recommendations, Walton was hired as a temp (临时工) at MIT.He eventually worked his way up to where he is today—an invaluable asset (不可或缺的人) to three departments.“I do feel lucky to work at MIT,” he says.“I’ve had the ability to tour the country sharing my story in hopes that some people may be inspired and employers may see young adults with tough backgrounds differently.”

In addition to Year Up, he is involved with a number of organizations committed to helping young adults overcome their troubled pasts. This desire to have a positive impact on people’s lives extends seamlessly into his work at MIT. “Giving back is very important to me,” Walton says. “So many people have invested their time and energy into helping me, so I feel it would be an injustice not to do so.”

【1】Staff members in MIT sing high praise for Walton mainly because________.

A.he enjoys interacting with his clients

B.he knows how to put out fires for others

C.he solves problems with a positive attitude

D.he is good at developing computer programs

【2】What do we know about Walton before he went to college?

A.He depended on his great-grandma for a living.

B.He stood out in study and sports in high school.

C.He lay flat just like other unsupervised children.

D.He was supported by foster care for better education.

【3】Why did Walton get involved with a lot of organizations?

A.To share his troubled past with young adults.

B.To pay back to society by helping young adults.

C.To advise businesses to treat young adults fairly.

D.To promote education equality among young adults.

【4】What can we conclude from Walton’s story?

    A.One good turn deserves another.

    B.Opportunities favor the prepared mind.

C.Education is a powerful weapon to change the world.

D.One’s future is defined by his efforts, not by his origin.
