二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、   Latest research provides some good news for those who hope to someday live in a world where women coders and surgeons are as plentiful as their male workmates: Today s elementary school girls are actually more interested in pursuing a STEM(science, tech, engineering, math)career than their male classmates are.

What’s more, while young boys’ ideal jobs have stayed relatively unfluctuating over the past 20 years of the century, young girls’ career dreams have grown more ambitious. Back in 1998, a study found that 11-year-old boys were most interested in becoming an athlete, a service member, or an engineer. Now, a new survey of children 10 and younger found that boys` career dreams have stayed relatively stable. In this study, girls said they aspired(渴望)to be teachers, nurses and hairdressers.

Also notable: Overall, girls are more likely to say they are interested in a STEM job than their male workmates. Indeed, 41% of girls express interest in technical careers, vs. 32% of boys.

"Yet while girls’ increased interest in scientific careers is clearly something to celebrate, there is still progress to be made to make it a reality," said Simon Isaacs, a researcher. "We can celebrate the girls’ focus on STEM, but if we look at children aged 1 through 10 right now, we still have a long way to go with regard to getting girls involved in engineering, computer programming and other tech fields." Other recent studies have similarly found that despite their great interest in STEM careers, most American girls believe they are relatively unlikely to end up in a job that requires computer science or engineering skills simply because they don’t think these jobs belong to girls. "Even as we talk about being a generation that is growing up more gender-non-conformist(无性别意识的)than any other generation, we aren`t necessarily seeing that translate into what kids want to be," said Isaacs.

Isaacs said that he decided to pursue this research to better understand how today’s culture of role models—who are as diverse as Mark Zuckerberg and Malala Yousafzai—are hugely shaping the next generation of students’ career ambitions.

"What we find at the elementary level is that kids are often basing their aspirations on whatever they’ve been exposed to in the media," said Tony Wagner, an expert. Wagner says that gender standards described in the media have begun to change, specifically with regard to female characters in medicine and science. Wagner has found that girls are more interested in careers that are described as having a direct human connection, like medicine and education. "What they don’t understand is that much of engineering and other STEM work, is profoundly human-centered. The problem lies in how it’s taught," he said.

    【1】According to the latest study________.

A.there will be more female engineers and doctors than males in the future

B.more girls show interest in having a job in STEM related areas than boys.

C.boys’ career choices have greatly changed compared with those of 20 years ago.

D.most girls would like to become teachers, nurses and hairdressers in the future.

【2】The underlined word "unfluctuating" can be replaced by________.

    A.necessary

    B.unchanging

    C.wider

    D.impossible

【3】Simon Isaacs and other recent surveys tend to indicate that________.

A.more boys under 10 years old prefer STEM

B.there are more girls in tech fields than boys

C.girls who will really work on STEM are not as many as imagined

D.many boys can’t end up with STEM careers, either

    【4】It can be inferred that________.

A.we can’t see the change in careers between girls and boys

B.gender difference still exists in career tendency

C.there is no sex difference in career choices for kids

D.we can’t expect that all children like STEM

【5】What is the main influence on kids’ tendency of the career choice?

    A.Social culture.

    B.School education.

    C.Family influence.

    D.Economic development.

  • 22、   If you are reading this, you were probably born in the 2000s. The oh-ohs. The 21st century. That would make you young, creative, connected, global, and no doubt smart. Maybe good-looking, too. Right? But what do other people think about your generation?

Some adults worry that you’re more interested in the screen in front of you than the world around you. They think of you as the “face-down generation” because you use your phone so much and they wonder how you will deal with school, friends, and family. Are today’s teenagers too busy texting and taking selfies to become successful in real life—or “IRL”, as you would say?

Other adults worry that today’s youth are spoilt and don’t want to face the challenges of adult life. Many children born in the 1990s and 2000s were raised by “helicopter parents", who were always there to guide and help their children with a busy schedule filled with homework and after-class activities such as dancing, drawing, or sports. With parents who do everything for them, today’s youth seem to prefer to live like teenagers even when they are in their 20s or 30s.

With these taken into account, does the face down generation need a warning? Well, probably not. The fact is that many of today’s teenagers are better educated and more creative than past generations. They seem to be enthusiastic and willing to be become leaders. More young people than ever volunteer to help their communities. There are also brave young people such as Malala Yousafzai, the teenager who won the 2014 Nobel Peace Prize for pushing girls’ rights to go to school.

So if you’re one of the oh-ohs, there are reasons to be hopeful about the future. Things are looking up for the face-down generation. Chances are that you will do GR8 (great) and LOL (laugh out loud).

1Which of the following words can not be used to describe the oh-ohs?

    A.Creative. B.Caring.

    C.Ignorant. D.Intelligent.

2What does the underlined phrase “helicopter parents” in Paragraph 3 mean?

A.parents who are rich and travel by helicopter.

B.parents who always watch over their children.

C.parents who have a very busy schedule.

D.parents who only turn up when necessary.

3What can we learn from the passage?

A.The writer is a member of the face-down generation.

B.The writer is optimistic about the future of the oh-ohs.

C.The oh-ohs are more good-looking than their parents.

D.The oh-ohs care about nothing other than their phones.

4What can be a best title for the passage?

    A.The “helicopter parents” B.The over-worried parents

    C.The spoiled generation D.The face-down generation

  • 23、   It is becoming increasingly important for researchers to closely monitor our ocean life. Howev¬er, observing sea creatures Up close is almost impossible since human presence scares them. Now, thanks to The Soft Robotic Fish, also known as SoFi, researchers may be able to keep a close eye on the sea creatures.

Built by MIT Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory ( CSAIL), the white re- mote-controlled robot resembles the real fish, complete with a tail that waves from side to side. Though not the first autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV) created to monitor the ocean , SoFi set- tles many of the problems that have blocked the usefulness of the previous robot fish.

Previous AUVs have had to be linked to boats because radio frequency communications don’t work well underwater. To overcome the problem, Director of die CSALL Daniela Rus and her team used sound waves. The technology can travel greater distances allowing divers to pilot SoFi from up to 50 feet away.

Also limiting the usefulness of traditional AUVs is the risk of collision. With the outside made of soft silicone (硅树脂)rubber and flexible plastic that keeps its inbuilt electronics dry, SoFi po¬ses no such danger. " Collision avoidance often leads to unnecessary movement, since the robot has to settle for a collision-free path" , says Rus. "In contrast, a soft robot is not only more likely to survive a collision but also could use it as information to form a more workable movement plan next time around. "

During test dives, SoFi moved alongside the ocean life at depths of 50 feet for up to 40 minutes at a time, taking photos and making videos. The researchers say sometimes the fish would swim a- longside the strange-looking robot-fish out of curiosity, while at other times they took no notice of its existence.

While SoFi presently only records video, future versions will include sensors. The researchers also hope to make it more autonomous. "We imagine someday it might help us uncover more secrets from the amazing underwater world that we know so little about," says Rus.

1What does the water think of SoFi?

    A. It makes ocean creature detection easier.

    B. It is the first AUV.

    C. It is closely controlled.

    D. It scares sea animals away.

2According to para 3, which of the following is ture?

    A. Sound waves travel faster than radio

    B. Sound waves work better than radio underwater.

    C. Previous AUVs use sound Avaves to communicate.

    D. A boat travels along with SoFi on the water.

3How does SoFi deal with collision?

    A. It can benefit farom its inbuilt electronics.

    B. It can avoid extra movement.

    C. It can smartly adjust its movement plan.

    D. It is set for a collision-free path.

4What will happen to SoFi in the future?

    A. SoFi can record videos.

    B. SoFi will go invisible.

    C. SoFi will be free from external control.

    D. SoFi will be equipped with smart devices.

  • 24、   The world’s glaciers are melting. Each year, they become smaller in size as ice breaks off and floats away. These giant pieces of ice also hold very old viruses and bacteria and as the ice melts, some of them may be waking up.

In 2015, scientists took ice from a 15,000-year-old glacier in Tibet, hoping to learn more about the history of life in the area. What was the result? The scientists found 28 new viruses frozen in the ice. Experts think they can learn a lot from these ancient viruses. They hope to find out how viruses and bacteria survive and this may help future people as new viruses turn up in the Earth’s changing climate. However, others worry whether these viruses and bacteria could cause sickness in humans. As yet, the viruses found in the Tibetan glacier seem to only infect amoebas, a very small living animal, they may not be a threat to people. But melting ice elsewhere in the world might be a different story.

In 2016, parts of Siberia saw a heat wave. The higher temperatures caused melting of soil that normally stays frozen year-round. As the ground warmed, bacteria escaped, which caused a sudden start of a serious disease in the area. In 2017, a teacher in Alaska came home from a trip with a skin infection. He visited his doctor. That’s when he learned that the infection was caused by bacteria from melted sea animal bodies. The bacteria had been frozen with the animals for many years before infecting him.

How worried should people be about the viruses and bacteria escaping from melting ice? Most experts aren’t ringing the alarm bells, yet. Instead, scientists worry that many viruses and bacteria will be lost as the ice melts, and so do the learning chances. Is there any hope of saving the world’s glaciers? Most experts say no — the planet has already warmed too much.

【1】What do we know about the viruses and bacteria in glaciers?

A.They will not be harmful to humans.

B.They only threaten small living animals.

C.They have stayed in ice for over 15,000 years.

D.Studying them helps humans in the long run.

【2】What does the teacher’s experience show?

A.Sea animal bodies are very common in ice.

B.Climate change can cause disease indirectly.

C.Some bacteria are safe for animals.

D.It’s easy to suffer a skin infection.

【3】What do experts care more about according to the last paragraph?

A.Having no ways to stop climate change.

B.Being unable to save the world’s glaciers.

C.Losing the chances to study the viruses and bacteria.

D.Helping the people infected with viruses and bacteria.

【4】What can be the best title for the text?

A.Ancient bacteria’s and viruses’ waking up causes worry.

B.Ancient bacteria and viruses are trapped in melting ice.

C.What can we do to protect the environment?

D.What can scientists learn from glaciers?
