二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、   1 One day, when I was perhaps six years old, I was walking with my father on a crowded street. All of a sudden, the normal flow of pedestrian traffic backed up as people tried to avoid a large object on the sidewalk. To my astonishment, the object turned out to be a human being, a man lying unconscious against a building. 2 Certainly no one made eye contact. As we walked by ,my father — the model of a loving, caring gentleman — pointed to a bottle in a paper bag and told me that the poor soul on the sidewalk just needed to sleep it off. Then the drunken man began to murmur senselessly. My father warned me not to go near, saying "You never know how he’ll react."

3 I had spent the previous 12 months traveling in poor Asian cities, but even by those standards this was a scene of misery. In addition to being desperately poor, the locals had to live in the extremely hot climate, ridiculously huge crowds and a fairly strong wind blowing dust everywhere. Suddenly a man carrying a huge bag of peanuts called out in pain and fell to the ground. 4 A half dozen sellers ran from their stands to help, leaving unattended what might have been the totality of their possessions. One put a blanket under the man's head; another opened his shirt; a third questioned him carefully about the pain; a fourth fetched water; a fifth kept onlookers from crowding around too closely; a sixth ran for help.5  The performance could have passed for a final exam at a paramedic (护理人员)school.

A.I then witnessed an astonishing scene.

B.Not one of the passers-by seemed to notice that it was a man.

C.This was totally different from the bitter experience I had in New York.

D.Within minutes, a doctor arrived, and two other locals joined in to assist.

E.I soon came to see that day's lesson as basic knowledge for a New Yorker.

F.I'll always remember a lesson that I learned as a boy growing up in New York City.

G.Yet many years later I had a very different experience while visiting a market in Rangoon.

  • 22、   The human sense of smell is weak. That is well known, and is suspected by many anthropologists of being the result of a trade-off(协调) in favor of visual processing power. In the specific case of people, however, the relative weakness of smell compared with sight extends to language, too. Humans have no difficulty putting names to colors but are notoriously bad at putting names to smells.

That might also be caused by how the brain is wired. But some doubt this. They suggest it is more likely a consequence of the tendency of languages to contain words useful to their speakers. Since smells matter little to most people, most languages have few abstract words for them. A study just published in Current Biology, by Asian Majid at Radboud University in the Netherlands and Nicole Kruspe at Lund University in Sweden supports this.

Dr. Majid knew from previous work she had done that the Jahai, a group of hunter-gatherers who live in western Malaysia, are remarkably good at naming smells. Dr. Majid suggested that it might, in part, be because the Jahai have a dozen wards dedicated to describing different sorts of smells in the abstract. For example, the Jahai use the word “cŋεs” for stinging(刺激的) sorts of smells associated with petrol, smoke and various insects, and “pleŋ” for bloody, fishy and meaty sorts of smells. According to Dr Majid, only “musty” is able to act in this way in English without drawing on analogy (banana-like, gooseberry-noted, and even earthy and sweet-smelling, are all analogies of some sort).

They also looked at how two other groups of people from the Malay Peninsula(马来半岛)used terms for colors and smells. These were the Semaq Beri who also hunt and gather for a living, and the Semelai, who cultivate rice. They found tat the Semaq Beri used abstract terms for smells 86% of the time-about as often as they did for colours, which was 80. The Semelai also used abstract colour descriptions at a similar rate, namely 78 of the time. But when it came to describing odours they relied on abstraction on only 44 of occasions, while resorting to analogies, such as “banana” and “chocolate”, 56 of the time. Given these findings, Dr.Majid and Dr.Kruspe argue that it is the hunting-and-gathering way of life, rather than the use of a particular language, that is crucial to the use of abstract names for smells.

1What leads to the difficulty of describing smells according to Majid's study?

A.The imbalance between smell and sight.

B.The poor function of the human nose.

    C.The structure of the brain.

    D.Lack of relevant vocabulary.

2What can be inferred  from the examples in Paragraph 3?

A.English mainly relies on analogy to name smells.

B.Analogy is often used in the Jan a i language to names smells.

C.“Musty”is an English word using analogy to name a smell.

D.English borrows some words for smells from the Jahai language.

3What can we learn from the study about two other groups?

    A.Language plays a decisive  role in_naming smells.

B.The two groups were equally good at describing colors.

C.The Semaq Beri's lifestyle helped them have an edge in naming smells.

D.Surviving in the forest has greater effect on human language than farming.

  • 23、   As temperatures approached 90 degrees in New York City last July 4th, three police officers went into a Whole Foods Market to get something cold to drink. What they walked into was a heated human drama.

Once inside, the police officers, Lt. Louis Sojo, Esanidy Cuevas and Michael Rivera, were approached by a store security guard who asked for help with a suspected thief. The woman in question didn’t have the look of a career criminal. She was obviously scared, and her cheeks were wet with tears.

The police officers glanced inside her bag. “All we saw was containers of food. We didn’t see anything else,” Cuevas told CBS New York.

    “I’m hungry,” she explained quietly.

Caught red-handed, the woman no doubt expected to be sent to prison for the crime of being hungry while poor. But the police officers had other ideas. “We’ll pay for her food,” Sojo told the surprised security guard.

There’d been no discussion among the three men, no need to see whether they were all in. It went unsaid. Instead, they picked up the woman’s bag and accompanied her to a cash register, where each paid $10 for the food. She would not be arrested today.

All the woman could do was weep in gratitude. Covering her face with a handkerchief and drying her eyes, she repeated, “Thank you, thank you.”

She wasn’t the only one touched by this act of compassion. “It was a very beautiful, genuine moment,” says Paul Bozymowski, who was at the store. He was so taken by what he’d witnessed that he posted a photo on Twitter for all to see.

But attention was never what the officers sought. They were driven by a far more common emotion. As Sojo told CNN , “When you look at someone’s face and see that they need you and they’re actually hungry, it’s pretty difficult as a human being to walk away from something like this.”

1Why did the woman cry at first?

A.She was grateful to the police officers.

B.She was sad because she had nothing to eat.

C.She was happy that she would not go to prison.

D.She was afraid because she was caught stealing.

2The underlined word “red-handed” in paragraph 5 can be replaced by ________.

A.on the spot B.with bloody hands

    C.in the red clothes D.with a knife

3Why did Paul Bozymowski post a photo on Twitter

A.Because he wanted to thank the police officers.

B.Because he was planning to seek attention from others.

C.Because he wanted to help the woman.

D.Because he was moved by what the police officers had done.

4What’s the best title for the passage?

A.A Crime Committed B.Trapped in the Market

C.Crime and Compassion D.Poverty and Compassion

  • 24、   Something strange happened when I was 14 years old. Every previous year on Thanksgiving Day I’d woken up early, filled with excitement. But that Thanksgiving, for some reason I saw no reason to celebrate. None of my family were really thankful, I realized. The whole thing was a lie!

During the dinner time, I left, hiding in the guest room and cried. My mom came to see what was wrong. “No one is really thankful!” I sobbed, “They just pretend for one day because that’s what they’re supposed to do!”

After I finished talking, she nodded. “You’re right,” she told me. “It’s fake until you find the truth for yourself.” She said it was my choice whether to celebrate with them or not. She said Thanksgiving is a time to reflect because we don’t always get to see loved ones and eat a good meal. Then she left.

I didn’t listen to her, thinking that every holiday was a lie and I could never find joy celebrating again. But giving in to my starving stomach, I went back to the dining room in a few minutes. I couldn’t believe what I saw. My entire extended family was waiting for me with wide smiles and concerned looks, and the table was covered with untouched plates.

“Andy,” my aunt said, “We can’t eat without you. We’re waiting for your turn. Now you can start it.” I didn’t know what to say first. Finally, I said I was thankful for having a younger brother to teach, play with, and see grow.

The family shared, and everyone had something beautiful to say. Listening to what they said, I suddenly understood what my mom meant about finding out my own reason for celebrating. For me, this holiday was a chance to pause and reflect on everything I cared about.

And with that, I took a huge and satisfying bite of food.

1Why did the author hide himself and cry on the Thanksgiving Day?

A.She is very understanding. B.She is strict with the author.

三、完形填空 (共1题,共 5分)
  • 25、Two new studies add further pieces to the jigsaw puzzle that is human evolution. One reports a (n)_________extra member of the genus Homo. The other casts _________ on possible interbreeding between three human species in the Middle East.

Homo longi--- “Dragon man” into English from Chinese, via Latin---is not a (n)_________find, but a reinterpretation of an existing one. The cranium (头盖) in question was dug up in Harbin in1933 and is_________at Hebei GEO University, in Shijiazhuang. It is146,000 years old and was_________ badged as an archaic form of Homo sapiens (智人). But Ni Xijun and Ji Qiang, who work at the university, disagree. As they report in the Innovation, the cranium would indeed have contained a brain similar in size to a modern human’s, but the fossil is too large to be sapiens and has molars and eye sockets which dwarf those of people today. Dr Ni and Dr Ji also realised that it is too long and low to be sapiens. It lacks the_________of a modern human cranium.

This is good news for_________ of the recent- African- origin theory, which holds that most non-African human beings alive today are descendants of a small number of migrants who_________to Asia from the Horn of Africa about60, 000 years ago, meaning that any non- African human fossil from before that date is probably of another species descended from earlier, non- sapiens departures from Africa. The question was, which earlier species did the Harbin fossil represent? By_________it with known archaic humans, including Homo erectus, Homo floresiensis, Homo heidelbergensis and Homo neanderthalensis, Dr Ni and Dr Ji__________ that it was none of them, and must therefore be new to science and so worthy of its own name. There is, however, one other possibility-for there is a now-extinct type of human of which no cranium has yet been __________ . Homo denisova’s existence was established by the extraction of DNA from a finger bone, and traces of that DNA, a remnant of interspecies breeding, still exist in modern humans, notably in China. Since one of the Harbin fossil’s molars perfectly matches the size and root __________ of a molar from the Denisova cave in Russia, after which Homo denisova is named, it may be that Dr Ni and Dr Ji have actually identified the first Denisovan cranium.

The other study, published in Science by Israel Hershkovitz of Tel Aviv University, also speaks to the question of interspecific interbreeding. Even supporters of the recent-African-origin theory recognise that there was, __________, an earlier “ leakage” of Homo sapiens from north-east Africa into the Levant. Dr Hershkovitz and his colleagues have been examining fossils of __________ antiquity—120,000-l40,000 years-- collected from Nesher Ramla, a site in Israel. These, they found, have sapiens-like jaw bones, Neanderthal-like molars and crania similar to those of Homo erectus. This suggests to them that they are the __________ of miscegenation between all three.
