21、 With the introduction of its new C40 Recharge on Tuesday, Volvo became the latest automaker to bet that consumers who have so far been uninterested to the idea of an EV (electric vehicle) might change their minds if it comes in a form of cars they love: the crossover (跨界车). Whether they do may be vital to the success of California’s plan to end sales of gasoline cars by 2035.
Volvo joins Ford of Europe and Jaguar in promoting EVs, promising every car it makes and sells by 2030 will be all-electric. In a webcast to introduce the new vehicle, the company also laid out a new sale strategy — the C40 and all electric Volvo cars will be available for purchase only online. A group of electric crossovers has hit the market in recent months, including the Ford Mustang Mach-E, the Tesla Model-Y and the Volkswagen ID.4.
Whether customers flock (群集) to crossover EVs will signal to regulators how much or how little work they need to do to meet the plans such as California’s. Despite the state’s aggressive plan, sales of all-electric vehicles remain less than 2% of the U.S. total.
“The manufacturers are taking a calculated risk here,” said Matt DeLorenzo of auto market research firm Kelley Blue Book. “Crossovers are popular with the mainstream. That’s where the volume is.”
Electric cars sold in the U.S. until recently were short-range ones or high-end luxury cars, neither one a high-volume category. In 2020, 2.4 million crossovers were sold in the U.S. “If you can’t sell an electric crossover, then you’ll have trouble selling any kind of vehicle,” DeLorenzo said.
To sell in large numbers, the vehicles will in the first place need continued government financial support for the next few years at least, Edmunds market analyst Caldwell said. Although battery costs are coming down, they still cost significantly more than gas engines. Although crossovers will serve as an early indicator of customer acceptance, Caldwell said she wouldn’t call 2021 a make-or-break year for EV makers.

23、Since the discovery of Otzi the Iceman in a European glacier in 1991, scientists have recovered a wealth of information from his 5, 300-year-old body. The brown-eyed, gap-toothed, tattooed (有刺青的) man, most likely spent 40 years farming and herding, and was probably suffering from a painful stomachache at the time when he died.
After 25 years of broad scientific research and media reports, the Iceman has certainly secured his place as “Europe’s Oldest Celebrity”. The Iceman was discovered back in 1991 with various clothing, including a coat, skin leggings (绑腿), a fur hat, and hay shoes. Due to the decomposition (分解) of the leather and fur over thousands of years, however, researchers have been unable to finally confirm specific animal species for some of the elements of Otzi’s clothes.
Understanding the choice of animals used in ancient clothing production-domestic or wild, local or imported-provides a unique chance to learn about the human past. Did the clothing reflect the social status of the wearer? Were animal skins selected just due to their availability, or were certain types of leathers and furs valuable for specific qualities?
Researchers were able to get ancient DNA markers in nine samples of leather and fur from different articles of the Iceman’s clothing. According to their study published in Scientific Reports, Otzi’s clothing choices were selective, practical and sensible. They confirmed that Otzi’s coat was from sheepskin, an identification already made in previous studies. However, the genetic analysis revealed that the sheep species sampled is closer to modern domestic European sheep than to their wild cousins, and the articles were made from the skins of at least four animals.
The analysis showed that part of Otzi’s coat was also made from a species of domestic goat that still lives in the hills and valleys of central Europe today. On the other hand, Otzi’s leggings were also from domestic goat leather, and not a species of wolf, fox, or dog as previous thought.

【3】What were Otzi’s leggings made from?
A.Imported dog skin.
B.Domestic goat skin.

A.Otzi’s coat was made from sheepskin.

24、 Sleeping is important, but we all know that, right? Many people have experienced strange sleeping patterns, unusual dreams and a feeling of restlessness and sleepiness during the coronavirus lockdown, despite a good night's sleep. So what sort of things can help you to improve your sleep?
Wrong Habits
Many myths related to sleep can be quite damaging for our health. Former British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher famously claimed that she only hit the sack for five hours a night. But according to experts this is harmful to health.
Likewise, falling asleep in front of the TV is another thing to avoid. The bright lights can prevent you from entering deep sleep.
Wrong Ways to Help Go to Sleep
From a young age we're told to count sheep to help us to nod off, with some choosing to stay in bed to battle with insomnia(失眠).However, some experts advise getting up and doing something mindless, like folding socks, to help us get in the mood to catch forty winks.
Psychologist Seth J. Gillihan PhD recommends walking to help in the battle against insomnia. He talks about a sleep study published in the journal Sleep Health which suggests that those who walk slightly more will experience better quality and duration of sleep. Watching what you eat or drink can also improve the amount of REM, or rapid eye movement you experience.
Snoring Can be dangerous
If you're a snorer, you might also want to take note. While most breathing noisily is harmless, it could be a sign of sleep apnoea,(睡眠呼吸暂停)with people suffering from the condition more likely to have strokes or heart attacks, irregular heartbeats or high blood pressure.
A Short Sleep during the Day May Refresh You
Finally, a decent nap, or even a power nap, can help you to be more alert, calm and focused. So while there are some good tips like exercising or folding socks to help us get a good night's sleep, sometimes a good afternoon's sleep can help us deal with the day ahead.
