二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、   Whenever Prince George steps out for an engagement, like on the royal tour of Canada, or poses(摆姿势) for official photographs, there’s one thing about the little royal that has long confused royal watchers: the fact that he only ever wears shorts.

According to William Hanson, an etiquette(礼仪) expert, there is a very good reason for this—and it has nothing to do with fashion, but rather royal tradition.

“It’s a very English thing to dress a young boy in shorts,” William Hanson said. “Trousers are for older boys and men, whereas shorts on young boys is one of those silent British class markers that we have in England. Although times are slowly changing, a pair of trousers on a young boy is considered quite middle class—quite suburban. No self-respecting royal would want to be considered suburban. Even the Duchess of Cambridge.”

The tradition can be traced back through the royal family, with both Princes William and Harry regularly seen wearing shorts until they were considered old enough to progress to full-length trousers.

“The usual custom is that a boy graduates to trousers around eight years old,” William added. “This is, historically, perhaps due to the practice of ‘breeching’, which dates back to the sixteenth century. A newborn boy would be dressed in a gown for their first year or two and then he was ‘breeched’ and wore articles of clothing that more resembled shorts or trousers than dresses.”

Ultimately, he concluded, in the case of William and Kate, the decision to dress George in shorts is more likely down to tradition than a class issue.

“The modern habit of upper class families choosing to dress their boys in shorts will deliberately hark back to(使人想起) a bygone age,” he said. “The British upper set are always keen to hold on to tradition, and this one also silently marks them out from ‘the rest’.”

1Why does Prince George only wear shorts?

    A.Prince George loves shorts.

    B.Prince George loves sports.

C.Shorts are a sign of fashion.

D.Wearing shorts is a royal practice.

2Which of the following words best describe Prince George’s wearing shorts?

    A.Reasonable. B.Practical.

    C.Traditional. D.Fashionable.

3Why do William and Kate dress Prince George in shorts?

A.They want to hold on to tradition.

B.They want to keep to royal fashion.

C.They want to train him to keep out the cold.

D.They want to ignore their social position.

  • 22、   The true Olympic spirit has been displayed by Canadian cross-country ski coach Justin Wadsworth, who helped Russian athlete Anton Gafarov with his broken ski during the Men’s Sprint Free Semifinals.

Gafarov’s start wasn't smooth. He fell three times, crashing early in the race and breaking his ski. It was clear that Gafarov was out of the race for the men's finals and wouldn't be able to compete for medals. Still, he wanted to finish in front of the home crowd. but his left ski was too badly damaged in the crash and its base had come off. The Russian skier faced finishing the race by walking to the line, not skiing.

However, the Russian's fall was seen by Canadian coach Justin Wadsworth, who immediately ran on to the course and helped Gafarov. “I went over and gave him one of Alex Harvey's, a member of the Canadian team who didn’t qualify for the finals. It was about giving Gafarov some dignity so he didn't have to walk to the finish area,” Wadsworth said. “We help because we know everyone works so hard in our sport,” says Wadsworth, who was an Olympic skier for the S before becoming a coach. “Everyone wants fair results. It was a matter of allowing Gafarov to finish the race.”

Gafarov was thoughtful about his performance. “My fall cost me a broken ski and a pole,” said Anton Gafarov, adding that he decided to continue fighting for the finals despite all the difficulties.

Gafarov believed the race should be finished in any way possible. “It was a matter of principle to hold on to the end,” he added. He is not devastated (毁灭) by his failure and is eager to take part in the next Winter Olympics despite back problems due to injuries.

1What happened to Gafarov during the Men's Sprint Free Semifinals?

A.He dropped his ski in the unlucky crash.

B.He gave up the race after falling three times.

C.He lost the gold medal for the men's finals.

D.He had his ski broken in the early race.

2What do we know about Wadsworth

A.He felt pity for Gafarov's bad luck in the race.

B.He knew what price Gafarov paid for the competition.

C.He was angry with his player' s not qualifying for the finals.

D.He once worked hard to become an Olympic skier for Canada.

3According to the text, which statement may Gafarov agree to?

A.Every dog has its day. B.Rome isn't built overnight.

C.There is no end to learning. D.Never give up in face of difficulty.

4What can be a suitable title for the text?

A.The Olympic Spirit. B.The Touching Moment.

C.The Meaning of Sports. D.The Winning Gold Medal.

  • 23、Getting your kids organized for the new school year

Parents can begin good organization habits with preschool-age children, said Elana Spira, Ph.D., co-author of The Organized Child. She suggests asking them to do small, simple actions on a regular basis. Maybe they unpack their backpacks and bring their lunch bag to the kitchen, or take their shoes off at the door.【1】. Doing small things at a young age helps children exercise discipline(自律) and attention, all of which they’ll need later on.

When kids enter elementary school, they’re ready for more responsibility. This is the time to teach them about daily activities, and help them take control over theirs. 【2】. When do children do their homework? How long do they need? Where do they do it? Where does the homework go once it is done? Figure it out all before, and keep to the schedule as much as possible.

As children get older and their schedules get busier, they need their parents ‘ help in recognizing priorities(优先处理的事) and understanding what it takes to make it all work. As with younger children, the goal is to help them figure out what will work for them — and then help them keep to it.

【3】. Julie Morgenstern, organizing and productivity expert, suggests keeping a family calendar—paper or electronic—and keeping it regularly. Each family member should have a color belonged to their activities, so it’s easy to see who is doing what, when. “You can’t expect people to look at the calendar on their own. You should have a family sit together every day to look at it, and look at three days ahead,” Morgenstern said. “【4】.”

“Set the child up for success by changing gradually,” Spira advises. “【5】. Wait until the child has been consistently successful with one solution, before moving on to the next.”

A.These will help develop good habits

B.You don’t have to solve everything at once

C.It’s better to find any problems days before

D.Children should prepare everything in advance

E.It’s wise to create a firm schedule for homework

F.Calendars are important to help families stay organized

G.Organization gives the children the chance to focus on a task

  • 24、   The following sad but true tale concerns my great-uncle, a wonderful, jolly, beloved man who was over six feet four and probably weighed close to three hundred pounds. He was also well-educated and in the early 1900s became a full-time Baptist minister. A kindly, gentle man despite his size, Uncle Alden Bentley’s only real fault seemed to be that he was terribly clumsy. As a young minister, he was paying a pastoral call one day on a woman in Dillon, South Carolina, when he accidentally sat on her Chihuahua, Twinkle, and killed it. As the lady searched for and called for her dog throughout the house, Uncle Alden felt underneath his hip and, realizing what he had done, panicked and slipped the dead dog into his coat pocket. Although he was devastated, he could not bring himself to tell the woman what had happened.

Five years later, he returned to the same home for an overnight visit and resolved to unburden himself by finally telling the woman exactly what had happened to Twinkie. She had just had the guest room prepared and had hung brand-new curtains. To make Uncle feel welcome, she had placed on the bedside table a large pitcher of ice water and a glass, as well as a pen and a bottle of ink, so he could work on his sermon before retiring.

Uncle liked to sleep with the window open and got up in the night to open it. As he did, he knocked over what he assumed to be a full glass of water. Then, groping along the walls in an unsuccessful search for the light switch, he retraced his steps several times before raising the window and settling back on the bed for the night. When he opened his eyes the next morning, he was horrified. The fresh wallpaper on two walls was covered with great black stains. The crisp white curtains were thoroughly spoiled with the prints of Uncle's huge paws. It had not been the water glass he'd overturned during the night-it had been the ink bottle.

In a shaken state of mind and knowing he must face the hostess, Uncle dressed hurriedly and started down the stairs outside the guest room. As he approached the landing, his foot slipped.

"Are you hurt?" His hostess cried as she rushed to Uncle's side.

"No," said Uncle as he rose to his feet, "but I have devastated your home." With that he quickly walked out the front door and, at the end of the walk, turned and said to his hostess with deep respect, "Twinkie had a Christian burial."

He then retired from the ministry and became a teacher of philosophy for many years at a private preparatory school in Massachusetts.

1What was the job of Uncle Alden when he was visiting the lady’s home?

    A.A government official. B.A teacher.

2What does the underlined word “retiring”mean in the second paragraph?

A.He suffered from a guilty conscience after the first visit to the lady’s home.

B.His rudeness led to a mess of the guest room during the second visit to the lady’s home.
