26、The lack of clues left behind by ancient Americans has made it difficult for researchers to determine precisely when humans first arrived on the continent. However, it has always been believed to be about 13, 000 years ago. Now, evidence from the Chiquihuite Cave in Zacatecas, Central Mexico, seems to suggest that prehistoric humans may have been living in North America as early as 30, 000 years ago.

Dr. Ciprian Ardelean, of the Autonomous University of Zacatecas who led the groundbreaking re- search, first became aware of the cave in May 2010. Getting to the cave located 2, 750 meters above sea level required a 45-minute truck ride to the base and an uphill climb over a rough terrain. However, Dr. Ardelean and his team found enough clues to make the difficult journey three additional times-in 2012, 2016, and 2017.

The archeologists’ efforts revealed many artifacts including over 1, 900 stone tools from multiple layers of the cave. The scientists found that most of the tools were between 16, 000 and 13, 000 years old. However, 239 artifacts unearthed from the deepest layer of the cave dated back an astonishing 30, 000 years!

While the genetic material gained in the cave was only plant and animal DNA, the team did find evidence of sulfur, potassium and zinc elements that could indicate human activities such as killing animals. Dr. Ardelean says the absence of human DNA confirms that the early people visited the cave for short periods of time.

The researchers are unsure of the ancient humans’ origins or the path they took to get to America. They guess the groups were tribes (部落) who moved from place to place and went extinct at some point during their migrations. Dr. Ardelean says, “We don’t know who they were, where they came from or where they went. They’re a complete enigma. We falsely assume that the native populations in the Americas to- day are direct descendants from the earliest Americans, but now we don’t think that is the case. ” Archeologist Loren Davis, from Oregon State University, is unsure that the artifacts recovered are tools. Charter schools are self-governing. Private companies operate some charter schools. They are similar in some ways to traditional public schools. 29、Scientists have discovered how cancer cells use an ‘‘invisibility cloak’’ to hide from the immune system．

They hope understanding the mechanism(机制,原理) will lead to therapies(疗法)in five to ten years that force cancer cells into the firing line of the body’s defenses.

Such a breakthrough would revolutionize the treatment of many deadly cancers, especially those of the breast and lung.

Researchers in Canada found that spreading tumors（肿瘤,肿块）can evade(躲避)the immune system by remodeling（改变…的结构）their DNA “packaging”.

The genetic code within each cell is held within “chromatin(染色质)”, a coiled（圈状的） structure made from lines of DNA wrapped around proteins．Because of chromatin, more than a meter of DNA can be squeezed inside a cell nucleus.

Recently scientists have learned that the chromatin proteins, called histones(组蛋白), have a code of their own which can influence the control of genes.

Professor Wilfred Jefferies and his colleagues found that some cancer cells have the ability to change this “histone code”.

By doing so，they remove the molecular（分子的）“tags” on cells that the immune system relies on to recognize cancer.

Without these tags, cancer cells are invisible to the immune system and can multiply and spread freely.

“This discovery begins to address the mysteries of how cancer hides from the immune system and spreads--it helps explain 20 years of observation in the field,” he said, “It may offer whole new ways for therapies.”

Is this the future AI art visionaries such as the French collective Obvious, which programmed this “painter” by getting it to compare its own work with 15,000 pre-20th century portraits, have in mind? Or are they just, God forbid, making a fast buck from deceivable art collectors? Because believing the algorithm that knocked this up to be in any meaningful way an “artist” is like thinking your voice-interaction programme is out to get you. Dream on. Computers would need to replicate human consciousness before they could replicate the funny thing humans do called “art”.

Art is a way in which human 【7】 expresses itself, and is equally true of the earliest cave art, Rembrandt’s portraits and Duchamp’s urinal. And that is what is missing from Portrait of Edmond Bellamy. Art is a way humans communicate ideas, perceptions and feelings to each other. It has no 【8】 outside the human passion to communicate. So in what meaningful sense can an AI replica of certain【9】 traits of old master paintings be called art?

For a robot to really make art, it would need an autonomous mind that was emotional as well as【10】. No AI developer has yet claimed to be anywhere near achieving that and if they ever do, their creation will probably have better things to do than paint portraits — like destroy humanity.
