  • 21、What Are the Roots of Your Self-Esteem?

Self-esteem is a person's subjective assessment of his or her worth to himself or herself. Self- esteem covers various beliefs about oneself (such as 'Tm a failure" and "I'm beautiful") as well as physiological states, including sadness, joy, and shame. The more we believe that we are worthy of happiness and good things in life, the more self-fulfilled we will be. When we don't believe that we are worthy of these things, our ability to enjoy them can suffer. 【1】

Healthy self-esteem as an adult can be a gift given in your childhood. It is a blessing that most people overlook. There are so many ways adults with high self-esteem were supported as children that resulted in them having high self-esteem. For instance, they were praised for what they had achieved.

【2】They likely experienced affection and were given enough attention. It is also possible that they excelled in studies or in sports and were admired for it by peers.

【3】As children, many of these people were criticized, yelled at, or abused in one way or another. There is also a high chance that they were given no attention by the adults who were supposed to care for them. In some cases, adults with poor self-esteem were often ridiculed for their shortcomings or bullied by peers.

It is common that these adults also believe that in order to be appreciated they need to be perfect.

【4】There are people who are obsessed with their careers or hobbies because in their mind they need to tie their worthiness to something concrete. Oftentimes these people have to pretend to be something they are not just to get approval.

How you feel about yourself impacts how you live your life. People with high self-esteem tend to have better relationships than those with low self-esteem. 【5】 So if you struggle to reach out for assistance, it could be rooted in your low self-esteem.

A.There is also a good chance that they were spoken to respectfully.

B.When we start to doubt what's important in life, we tend to do less of it.

C.Since self-esteem is connected to how we perform, it is important to work on it.

D.People with poor self-esteem, on the other hand, often experienced the opposite.

E.This creates an image in their mind that without accomplishment they are worthless.

F.They face failure too, but they understand that failure or success doesn't define them.

G.High self-esteem enables you to ask for help and support from the people around you when you need it.

  • 23、Researchers may have found a way to keep plants from dying of thirst. They developed a soil additive (添加剂). It will steal water from the air to share with plants.

Their invention is a super-moisture-absorbent gel (SMAG高吸海凝胶). It absorbs water from the air during the night. When the sun warms it the next day, that gel releases its accumulated water into the root zone of the plants.

Guihua Yu, an engineer at the University of Texas at Austin, led the team that developed the gel. The gel mixed with soil absorbs water and holds it. The next day, rather than allowing it to evaporate (蒸发), the gel instead slowly releases that water into the soil.

The engineers tested the soil additive to grow carrots. During an experiment, they compared carrots grown in sandy soil alone with carrots grown in sandy soil that had been mixed with the get.The gel-treated soil lost about 60 percent of the water after about a month. In contrast, the untreated soil lost 80 percent of its water in just one week.

Jeff Hattey is a soil scientist. He says similar additives have been used in potting soil for many years. He says the gel works in a similar way. "The big questions for me are first, how much SMAG-soil would you have to use? How long does it last once it's in the soil?"

Yu believes future studies will help his team understand if the gel could be used for larger, outdoor fields. If it can, the water in the air could allow crops to be grown in dryer cli-males, where irrigation is not practical. It shouldn't hurt the bacteria or worms that are needed to keep soil healthy for growing things. The gel also should pose no risks if it washes into lakes or streams. The research team hopes to confirm that in the near future.

    【1】How does SMAG get water?

A.By absorbing water from the root zone.

    B.By absorbing water from air.

    C.By absorbing water from plants.

    D.By absorbing water from soil.

【2】What can we infer from Hattey's words?

A.The SMAG is a totally new invention.

    B.People will use SMAG-soil soon.

C.Scientists have to do more for SMAG.

D.SMAG has a lot of advantages.

【3】What will Guihua Yu probably do in the near future?

A.Let SMAG have fewer side effects on soil.

B.Prove whether SMAG is safe to environment.

    C.Make SMAG keep soil healthy.

    D.Make SMAG acceptable by people.

【4】What may be the suitable title for the text?

A.An invention of making plants grow in a dry climate.

B.An invention of making plants grow quickly.

    C.An invention of defeating droughts.

D.An invention of protecting the soil.

  • 24、Moscow city authorities have begun using comics with characters from Russian fairytales to explain to migrants how they should behave. They say a 100-page guide is needed to “maintain a positive image” of the city and could help reduce “tensions” between natives and migrants. But some people have pointed out that foreign immigrants and natives may be viewed as antagonists in the manual(手册). They think immigrants and natives should live together in harmony.

Russians and immigrants have repeatedly clashed in Moscow recently. Many immigrants from ex-Soviet republics in Central Asia, the Caucasus and North Caucasus, arrive in Moscow every year, attracted by the capital's job opportunities and relatively high salaries. A significant number of them work in the Russian capital illegally.

The new guide in Russian seeks to explain the “dos” and" don'ts" to immigrants. They are urged not to cause trouble,by staring at women,or eating or talking loudly on the streets. They are also warned that the police may routinely stop them to check their documents.

In the manual,Russia's famous“Three warriors”are meant to represent the city's law enforcement agencies, while Prince Yuri Dolgoruky (a historical character)is used for tours around Moscow. Meanwhile,Vasilisa the Wise and The Snow Maiden test the reader on Russia's language and history. A special section of the book explains the importance of following Moscow's strict residency and employment rules, stressing that immigrants could otherwise be deported(驱逐出境)or banned from entry.

The manual was written primarily for illegal immigrants,Alexander Kalinin, who heads the group Support for Working Migrants in Moscow, told BBC Russian.

“We want to raise their level of law awareness,”he added.

In the beginning immigrants had been identified as representatives of deferent nationalities, but the book's authors later decided to drop this idea so as "not to offend anyone", said Mr. Kalinin.

"The old conflict between Russian heroes and non-Slavic invaders appears again,"

Yevgeny Varshaver, a migration expert told BBC Russian. He also suggested that the language used in the book would be "difficult" to understand for some immigrants who were not native Russian speakers.

    Karen Helps Out

Karen sat at the kitchen table. She finished her last bite of cereal as she watched Dad fill a bucket with tools “What are you working on today?”she asked.

“Last week I fixed the porch railing,” Dad said. “That means today it’s ready to paint.” “Can I help?”asked Karen.Dad usually said no, because his tools were sharp and too heavy for Karen to pick up. Karen usually just watched Dad work

“Yes,” said Dad. “Painting is a safe job for you to try. Go put on some old clothes and meet me out front.”

Karen found play clothes from last summer that were a little small. Next year they wouldn’t fit at all. It would be okay if she dripped paint on them by mistake. Karen was planning to be very careful.

“Ready!” called Karen. She sat down on the top porch step.

Dad dipped his paint brush into a cart of white paint.Karen watched as he carefully wiped the edge of the brush on the side of the can. “That’s what you do to get rid of extra paint. See? No drips.”Then Dad made one long smooth line of paint along the porch railing.“Remember to paint in just one direction so things stay neat.” said Dad.

Karen was very excited to try painting herself. She dipped her brush in the paint and wiped the edge, just like Dad. Then she tried to paint a stripe on the railing. Her paint line started out nicely, but she soon ran out of paint.

“That’s a good start.” said Dad. “Now dip your brush again and continue your line.”Karen tried again. Soon her paint line was almost as long as Das. She watched as Dad went over her line one more time. He smoothed it out and connected it to his line. “Painting is fun!” said Karen. She and Dad kept working together.

    注意:1. 续写词数应为150左右;
