  • 27、   For Shaholly Ayers, who was born without a right arm, “no” is something she’s used to hearing. As a child, her teachers told her she wouldn’t be able to participate in a gym class. As a teenager, coaches told her she wouldn’t make the basketball team. And then in college, as she dreamed of becoming a fashion model, an agency (代理机构) she approached said, “It just wouldn’t work.” That day, about 10 years ago, Ayers decided to take action. She decided to realize her dream without an agent.

“I was so new, and I was so green,” she said. “I didn’t have a portfolio or anything. I had to start at the very beginning. I worked with photographers and makeup artists to build my portfolio first, and then I started going to local fashion shops and telling them I’d model for them for free. It worked.”

Ayers has since participated in six seasons of New York Fashion Week, mostly recently walking the runway for Art Hearts Fashion’s shows last month. She has also modeled for Nordstrom, which has nearly 400 chain stores in the USA.

Ayers has a job in digital marketing that she loves, but she hopes to one day be a full-time model. Ayers also hopes to help others find their dream careers as a brand ambassador for Global Disability Inclusion, a consulting company that helps companies attract and hire people with disabilities.

“She shows all we represent,” a manager for the firm said. “She shows to the world that a person with a disability is confident, qualified and, yes, beautiful to be a world-class model.”

Ayers, who asked TODAY Style not to give away her age, as it’s yet another hurdle she has to face in the modeling world, has come a long way from being a little girl in Oregon, where she grew up.

1What can we learn from the first paragraph?

A.Shaholly Ayers lost her right arm in a traffic accident.

B.Shaholly Ayers gave up her dream to become a model.

C.Her teacher encouraged Ayers to participate in a gym class.

D.Shaholly Ayers was often refused because of her disability.

2What can we infer about Shaholly Ayers?

A.She is now a part-time model. B.She isn’t fond of her present job.

C.She has set up a consulting company. D.She wishes to become an ambassador.

3What does the underlined word “hurdle” mean in the last paragraph?

    A.condition B.difficulty C.luck D.puzzle

4Which of the following words can best describe Shaholly Ayers?

A.Patient and careful. B.Humorous and wise.

C.Hardworking and helpful. D.Friendly and honest.

  • 28、My teacher,Mr.August J.Bachmann,was the most influential teacher I ever had.

I had gotten into trouble in his class:Another student had pushed me for fun,and I became angry and began to hit him.Mr.Bachmann stopped the fight, but instead of sending me to the office,he sat me down and asked a simple question,“Penna, why are you wasting your life? Why aren't you going to college?”

I didn't know anything about colleges or scholarships. No one had ever considered that a fatherless boy from the poorest neighborhood had a future. That day, instead of rushing off for lunch,he stayed and explained possible education options to me.At the end of our talk,he sent me to see a secretary who had a child at a state college. This was in 1962 at Emerson High School in Union City,New Jersey.

Well,55 years have passed, and what have I done with the knowledge he gave me?I gained a PhD from Fordham University when I was only 29.I taught English and social studies and then moved up the chain of command from teacher to principal(校长).

I've sat on the board for Magnet Schools of America and represented that organization at the United Nations.I've won a number of great educational awards. But where would I be if a truly caring teacher had not taken the time out of his lunch period to speak to me?It was without question only his confidence in me that helped me forward.

I have repaid his kindness hundreds of times by encouraging misguided youngsters to aim higher. If I have saved any children,it is because of him.If I have been a successful educator,it is because I had a great role model in Mr.Bachmann.

  • 29、   “I will think of it.”It is easy to say this, but do you know what great things have come from thinking? We cannot see our thoughts, or hear, or taste, or feel them; and yet what strong power they have!

Sir Isaac Newton was seated in his garden on a summer evening, when he saw an apple fall from a tree. He began to think, and, in trying to find out why the apple fell, discovered how the earth, sun, moon, and stars are kept in their places.

A boy named James Watt sat quietly by the fireside, watching the lid ( 盖子) of the tea kettle as it moved up and down. He began to think, and he wanted to find out why the steam in the kettle moved the heavy lid. From that time he went on thinking and thinking and when he became a man, he improved the steam engine so much that it could, with the greatest ease, do the work of many horses.

James Ferguson was a poor Scotch shepherd (羊倌) boy. Once, seeing the inside of a watch, he was filled with wonder.“Why should I not make a watch?”he thought. But how was he to get the materials out of which to make the wheels and the mainspring (钟表等的主发条)? He soon found how to get them: he made the mainspring out of a piece of whalebone. He then made a wooden clock which kept good time. He began, also, to copy pictures with a pen, and portraits (肖像) with oil colors. In a few years, while still a small boy, he earned money enough to support his father. When he became a man, he went to London to live. Some of the wisest men in England, and the king himself, used to attend his lectures. His motto was, “I will think of it.” and he made his thoughts useful to himself and the world.

When you have a difficult lesson to learn, don’t feel discouraged or ask someone to help you before helping yourselves. Think, and by thinking you will learn how to think to some purpose

四、短文填空 (共1题,共 5分)
  • 31、Directions: Complete the following passage by using the words in the box. Each word can be used only once. Note that there is one word more than you need.

The view that the spirit of adventure no longer has any scope for its enterprise seems, at first glance, depressingly true. The highest mountains have been scaled; the deepest seas plumbed. Maps today no longer contain huge blanks marked "Unknown Territory", nor do they make random guesses at the shapes of 1 land-masses. All major journeys of exploration to 2 the true shape and nature of the globe have been made in the past. It was left to us to fill in the details with 3 which once would have been considered impossible. The gaps have been 4. What next?

The obvious answer, of course, is that man is now looking upwards into space. Discoveries are being made at such a tremendous rate that even authors of science-fiction are finding it difficult to keep up with them and have to tax their imagination to invent bigger and better space-craft. Satellites sending signals as they swing round our globe have become 5.

Astronauts have successfully landed on the moon and its entire surface has been photographed. The information that satellites may provide fueling stations for manned rockets no longer strikes us as preposterous. If thirty years ago, a scientist has urged that we send messages into outer space in the hope of receiving an answer, he would have been regarded as either irresponsible or mad. Now, anything seems 6.

From dreams like these, we return to earth with a bump. Trips into space are all very well, but they are not for us; we must 7 ourselves with our own, much-traveled world. The earth itself is the training-ground for adventurous spirits, for "adventure" need not mean the seeking out of something new. A person can be called adventurous when he finds out something for himself, and it does not matter how many times the discovery has been made before. No one would say that men who set out now to cross the forbidding Antarctic are less enterprising than their predecessors who tried to do the same thing. The little boy who climbs the small hill that 8 his town, or even he who tries to climbs and fails, has precisely the same spirit that led Hillary to climb Everest. For the bold spirit and inquiring mind, there are inexhaustible possibilities. So long as there are people willing to 9 places that are well-known, there will be those who will, one day, set foot on remote and 10 shores.
