二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 26、   Thousands of years ago, people didn't live in cold places because they didn't know how to keep themselves warm. Later they learned to make clothes. When an animal was killed, they made use of its skins to cover their bodies. The skins kept them warm. Nature is people's good friend. It once helped people find fire, when lightning(闪电) hit a forest and started a fire. People took some of this fire to their homes. The fire kept them warm, and also frightened wild animals. Soon people found the food cooked tasted much better, so they began to use the fire to cook food. But people still didn't know how to make a fire. When they got a fire from the forest they tried to keep it burning. If it went out, they had to wait for years. But later they found different ways to make fire. For example, they made fire by burning wood or knocking two pieces of stones.

Today it's easy for people to make fire because they have matches, lighters and different kinds of heaters. They can make fire at any time they need.

1Once people lived only in hot places because they did not know how to _____.

A.kill animals B.take fire from forest

    C.keep themselves warm D.make matches

2People use animal skins _____in those days.

A.for food B.to make fire C.for burning D.to warm themselves

3People later learned how to use fire to ______.

    A.cook food B.kill animals C.cut off an animal’s skin D.burn wood

4People later learned to make fire by burning _____.

    A.stones B.wood C.dry leaves D.animal skins

  • 27、   I was taking in the breathtaking view from the top of Sydney Harbor Bridge when I sensed I was about to witness something even more dramatic right in front of me. Although we were all tied to lines running along the steel girders, a fellow climber called Mike had somehow managed to drop onto bended knee and turn to face his girlfriend, Wendy. I knew what was coming. “Wendy, will you marry me?” he asked. There was a quick smile and an attempted kiss and then a big beam. Mike had the answer he hoped for and all of us burst into a round of applause.

Apparently more than 2,000 couples have become engaged ( ) at the summit since 1998, when it became possible to climb it in organized tour groups. The bridge, perhaps the most recognized symbol of this beautiful city, opened in 1932. It's still the world's largest steel-arch bridge.

We returned to the fantastic view: the famous Sydney Opera House, ferries and sailboats making their way through the harbor, the city skyline — but I had to force myself to look down. We had climbed 1,423 steps to the top of the bridge and I didn't know whether to be delighted or scared.

Nicole Kidman has done it. So have Bruce Springsteen, Prince Harry and scores of other celebrities. But climbing to the top clearly isn't just for the rich and famous. On the contrary, Australian youngsters do it to celebrate their 12th birthdays. (You have to be at least 12 years old to do the climb.) A 100-year-old woman climbed it and told guides it was on her list of things to do before she died.

You can climb during the day, at twilight, or even after dark with headlamps. People climb in all weathers except when there's lightning in the area. In fact, over two million people have made the three-and-a-half-hour climb to the top of the famous bridge—an adventure that cannot be done anywhere else in the world on a bridge this big. That's probably why this climb has won a lot of tourism awards. Today, the climb is firmly on the "to-do" list for locals as well as tourists.

1What can we learn on the bridge is quite rare?

A.Getting engaged on the bridge is quite rare.

B.People climb the bridge on climbers’ age.

C.There are no limitations on climbers’ age.

D.Many famous people have done the climb.

2How did the author feel when he climbed to the top of the bridge?

A.Bored and tired B.Fearful and confused

C.Excited and nervous D.Relived and relaxed

3What is the author’s purpose of writing the passage?

A.To introduce the popularity of the bridge.

B.To emphasize the importance of the bridge

C.To explain the functions of the bridge.

D.To describe the fantastic view from the bridge.

Samuel Langhorne Clemens (November 30, 1835-April 21, 1910), better known by his pen name Mark Twain, was an American author and humorist. Twain grew up in Hannibal, Missouri, which provided the 1 for Huckleberry Finn and Tom Sawyer. After an apprenticeship with a printer, he worked as a typesetter and 2 articles to the newspaper of his older brother, Orion Clemens. He later became a riverboat pilot on the Mississippi River before heading west to join Orion in Nevada. He referred humorously to his singular lack of success at mining, turning to journalism for the Virginia City Territorial Enterprise. In 1865, his 3 story The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras spent some time as a miner. The short story brought international attention, and was even translated into 4 Greek. His wit and satire, in prose and in speech, earned 5 from critics and peers, and he was a friend to presidents, artists, industrialists, and European royalty.

Though Twain earned a great deal of money from his writings and lectures, he 6 in ventures that lost a great deal of money, notably the Paige Compositor, a mechanical typesetter, which failed because of its 7 and imprecision. Following these financial setbacks, he filed for  protection  from  his  creditors  via  bankruptcy,  and  with  the  help  of  Henry  Huttleston Rogers 8 overcame his financial troubles. Twain chose to pay all his pre-bankruptcy creditors in full, though he had no legal responsibility to do so.

Twain was born 9 after a visit by Halley’s Comet, and he predicted that he would go out with it, too. He died the day after the comet returned. He 10 himself as the  “greatest American humorist of his age”, and William Faulkner called Twain “the father of  American literature”.
