二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 26、   On Thursday night my two adult children took us out to dinner as our daughter lives in Bathurst and she will be there for Father’s Day with her husband’s side of the family. Two of our grandchildren were able to join us.

Having pre-celebrated my Father’s Day and it being on our minds, my wife asked this question only this morning:

“Do you remember anything about your father?”

While this subject had come up before, however, the question had not been put so bluntly(直率的). I answered “No. My only memory is of the few photos outside.” You see, my father died when I was only four years old.

Many people have lost their father early in life and it is easy to feel somewhat sorry for having to deal with such a situation, especially when the death has occurred when you are at an early age. On reflection, I think I do not remember anything because he passed away when he was a member of the Royal Australian Air Force. He was a Corporal(下士) doing land based duties, however, a medical condition took his life. It was 1942.

The 2nd World War was in full battle and Australia was being attacked. My Mum and I, with my younger brother, were living with my grandparents and I can only imagine the emotional circumstances that existed in the household at that time. Probably not something that would leave a memory.

What I would like to say at this time, as the question is often asked, “What did you learn from your father?” The thing I learnt from his passing, at the age of 28, is a love of life. What I do remember is growing up wondering if I would live to his age, and after I did, thinking each year the bonus(津贴) of life I had been blessed with when compared to my father.

I have sometimes felt disappointment in not knowing my father but life has moved on. However, can I say to those who do have fathers, celebrate today with him and return him all the love and happiness he has given to you.

1Why did the author answered “No” in Para 4?

    A. He didn’t want to talk about his father. B. His father died when he was very young.

    C. He was much disappointed in his father. D. There was no photo of his father left.

2What do we know about the author?

    A. He is the only child of his parents. B. His father died of a medical condition.

    C. He remembered quite a lot about his father. D. He lived with his parents during World War II.

3The father’s passing makes the author____.

    A. realize the love of his own life. B. hope to live longer than his father.

    C. feel very disappointed all the time. D. want to get more bonus from life.

4What is the author mainly talking about in this passage?

    A. His father’s life. B. His Father’s Day.

    C. His fatherless childhood. D. His father’s influence.

  • 27、   Memories of people who have done us wrong return repeatedly to us from time to time. Sometimes we remain angry with a person even though we have forgotten why we are angry in the first place. Learning to forgive is important. Here is why.

As humans, it is one of our weaknesses to lose our minds at times and give in to our anger. However, making that anger stay and feeding it with hate will make it a bad thing to others and to yourself. You have to manage your anger and know how to overcome it. If someone has done wrong to you, forgiving is the first step to get rid of your anger.

You may have once done wrong to others too. Now think if you are worth forgiving. You may find that you are actually a good person. So if someone else does wrong to you, focus on the good times you had together and the good things that he or she has done for you. Is the offence enough to erase the good things he or she has done in the past? When your nerves calm down, think back. There must have been something good there to stop you from hating the person.

If things do not work out and you stay angry with the person or the person refuse to apologize, you still have to make an effort to forgive. Why? That is because an angry person is not a pleasant person to be with. One day you will find yourself talking about the offence over and over to people who do not know the person you are talking about. Anger consumes a person and eventually takes over. It makes you look at things in a bad way and no one can stand being with someone like that.

Lastly, make sure that you have forgiven every offence before going to sleep at night. If someone has hurt you, tell them how you feel. And the most important thing you have to say is “You have hurt me, but I choose to forgive you.” This will give you an inner peace and make your life positive in every way.

1What is the weakness of humans mentioned in paragraph 2?

A.Letting anger take control of us. B.Never trying to forgive others.

C.Doing wrong to people around us. D.Hurting ourselves and those we love.

2By saying we may have once done wrong to others too, the author wants to _______________.

A.show we are no better than others B.encourage us to be kind to others

C.show it’s normal to hurt each other D.encourage us to find the good things in others

3What does the underlined word “erase” mean in paragraph 3?

    A.Strengthen B.Enrich C.Remove D.Improve

4According to the author, how can we benefit from forgiving others?

A.We’ll know better about others. B.We’ll become a talkative person.

C.We’ll be forgiven by those hurt by us. D.We’ll avoid becoming a negative person.

    5The passage mainly talks about_______________.

A.why we should forgive B.how we can forgive

C.why we should forget D.how we can control anger

  • 29、Canada---The True North"'

In 1867 when Canada was created, a towering Silver Maple tree standing in front of Alexander Muir's house in Toronto gave him an idea. He would write a poem and a song about the great tree, so common in Canada and so symbolic, to celebrate Canada's Confederation(联邦).

His song was called The Maple Leaf Forever and it has been the unofficial Canadian anthem(国歌) to this day.

Last July during a major storm, the tree was knocked down. It fell across a house and a street. But because it was an important historic tree, most of the wood was saved rather than being destroyed.

Recently woodworkers at The Evergreen Brick Works in Toronto, a community projects centre, cut the wood into logs and other usable pieces. The pieces were given to artists to create about 150 different projects.

One artist took a piece of tree. On it, he'll carve (雕刻) a series of historical Canadian scenes. Another wood carver is making beautiful round wooden bowls. Yet another made an interesting candlestick from the tree's branches.

Other woodworkers are making wood wig stands(假发架)for cancer patients who lose their hair. Still others are taking small pieces of wood and making them into pens. And some of the wood was made into gavels (小木槌)to be used by Toronto' s city councilors(市议员).

Some of the projects will be on public show while some will be personally owned.

The people in Toronto who lived near the tree for years and tried to protect it from harm were very sad to see the old tree go. But they are glad to see that their maple tree will live forever in the hearts and homes of many people.

1Why did Alexander write The Maple Leaf Forever

A.To celebrate the birth of Canada.

B.To express his love for the maple tree.

    C.To go with his poem.

    D.To memorize the maple tree.

2Why was the wood of the tree kept by many people?

    A.The tree has practical value.

B.They used it to honour Alexander Muir.

C.They thought the tree was publicly owned.

D.The tree was closely tied to Canadian history.

3What is the best title for the text?

A.Maple Tree in Toronto B.Projects of Maple Tree

C.Maple Tree Will Live Forever D.A Fallen Maple Tree was saved

  • 31、Directions: Complete the following passage by using the words in the box. Each word can be used only once. Note that there is one word more than you need.

NASA is on a journey to Mars, with a goal of sending humans to the Red Planet in the 2030s. That journey is already well under way.

For decades, the agency and its partners have sent orbiters, landers and rovers(探测器), 1 increasing our knowledge about the Red Planet and paving the way for future human explorers. The Curiosity rover has gathered radiation data to help us protect future astronauts, and the upcoming Mars 2020 rover will study the 2 of Martian resources, including oxygen.

Building on the robotic legacy(遗产), the human exploration of Mars crosses three thresholds(门槛), each with 3 challenges as humans move farther from Earth: Earth Reliant, the Proving Ground, and Earth Independent.

Earth Reliant explorations is 4 on research aboard the International Space Station. The orbiting microgravity laboratory serves as a world - class test bed for the technologies and communications systems needed for human missions to deep space. Astronauts are learning about what it takes to live and work in space for long periods of time, improving our understanding of how the body changes in space and how to protect astronauts' health.

Next, we move into the Proving Ground, 5 a series of missions near the moon called “cislunar space” to test the capabilities we will need to live and work at Mars. Astronauts on the space station are only hours away from Earth, but the proving ground is days away, a(n) 6 stepping stone to a Mars mission, which will be months away from home.

Also in the 2020s, we’ll send astronauts on a year-long mission into this deep space proving ground, confirming habitation and testing our 7 for Mars.

Finally, we become Earth Independent, building on the knowledge 8 on the space station and in deep space to send humans to low-Mars orbit in the early 2030s.

This phase will also test the entry, descent(降落)and landing techniques needed to get to the Martin surface and study what's needed for in-situ resource utilization or "living off the land". NASA is already studying the 9 "Exploration Zones" on Mars that would offer compelling science research and provide resources our astronauts can use.

There are challenges to 10 Mars, but we know they are solvable. We are well on our way to getting there, landing there, and living there.
