二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 26、   How do successful people think? What drives them? Interviews and investigations indicate that there are several keys to success that successful people share.

First of all, successful people never blame someone or something outside of themselves for their failure to go ahead. They realize that their failure lies in their own hands. They understand that they cannot control things in life, such as nature, the past and other people. But in the meantime, they are well aware that they can control their own thoughts and actions. They take responsibility for their life and regard this as one of the most empowering things they can do. Perhaps what most separate successful people from others is that they live life “on purpose”they are doing what they believe they are put here to do. In their opinion, having a purpose in their life is the most important element that enables them to become fully functioning people. They hold that when they live their life on purpose, their main concern is to do the job right. They love what they do-and it shows. People want to do business with them because of their commitment. To live their life on purpose, successful people find a cause they believe in and create a business around it. Besides, they never easily give up. Once they have set up goals in their life, they’re willing to do whatever it takes to achieve their goals. Top achievers always bear in mind that they don’t have forever.

Rather than seeing it negative or depressing, they use the knowledge to support themselves and go after what they want energetically and passionately.

1Successful people owe their failure to _______.

    A.others B.the society C.themselves D.their fate

2The biggest difference between successful people and general people is that _______.

A.successful people have a purpose in life B.successful people can work hard

C.successful people have better minds D.successful people can always win support

3People like to do business with successful people because of their _______.

    A.money B.cleverness C.fame D.devotion to work

4The writer wants to tell us _______.

A.how people live on purpose B.how people can be successful

C.how people make plans D.how people do business

  • 27、Scholarship Application Tips in 2019 for college students

    • Before you apply

    1. Work hard to get good grades. Don’t sweat about one bad grade, but always try to do your best.

    2. Get involved, and stay involved, in out-of-class activities. Sports, clubs, drama, bands and orchestras — these often count toward a student’s overall scholarship application evaluation. The same goes for paid (or unpaid) work experience.

    3. Begin your scholarship research early — by your sophomore (大学二年级) or junior year of high school, if possible. Make special notes of application deadlines, as they can vary from late summer to late spring.

    4. Apply for as many scholarships as you are eligible (符合条件的) for — several smaller scholarships can add up to a lot of money.

    • During the application process

    1. Read the supplementary (补充的) materials that come with scholarship application forms to better understand the program’s focus (community service, subject interest). Try to answer the questions with the focus area in mind.

    2. Answer questions as they are asked. Don’t go off topic.

    3. If there is a financial section to the application, make sure you get accurate and complete information from all appropriate sources to ensure your eligibility.

    4. Take your time. Write down everything you can think of for each question, then set the application aside for a day so you can look everything over again before you send it off.

    5. Don’t wait until the last minute to complete your application, especially if you are applying online. Computer systems can get blocked with the large volume of applicants hoping to submit (上交) their qualifications during the last few days and hours before a deadline.

    6. If a third party has to complete part of your application, such as providing a letter of recommendation, make sure you ask them early on and remind them as often as necessary to ensure they provide you with the necessary materials.

    7. Last but not least, review your application with your parents to make sure you haven’t left out any important details.

Good luck to the students applying for the 2019 scholarship programs!

1Before you apply for a scholarship, it’s best to ________.

    A. pay more attention to grades than to out-of-class activities

    B. focus on only one scholarship application

    C. get as much work experience as possible

    D. begin your preparation as early as possible

2The underlined phrase “sweat about” most probably means ________.

    A. worry about B. speak of

    C. talk about D. think of

3The author suggests that applicants should ________.

    A. submit the application in the few days

    B. avoid submitting the application online

    C. complete and submit the application in one day

    D. double-check their application with their parents

  • 28、   Are you preparing for a standardized English exam? Do you find the listening section particularly challenging?

The world of standardized examinations to assess candidates’ abilities in the English language has grown rapidly, especially in the last 30 years. Most of these exams include a listening paper, in which a number of micro-skills are tested, such as listening for detailed information, understanding an author’s attitude and more. Despite the different types of exams out there, they all share many things. We can call them “skills”, as they can be applied while taking the listening test.

You need to exercise your skills to make “educated guesses” although you won’t ever have super powers. Most standardized tests give you some time to read ahead. You must use this time wisely, as this is crucial to predicting as much as possible a number of things. You should quickly ask yourself: What is their relationship? Where are they? Why are they talking? What are their tones?

By doing this, you will be able to set the situation and expect specific vocabulary which might be used in the coming listening materials. All this can be done very quickly. If the passage contains gaps that you must fill out, you should try to predict the type of word or expression (noun, adjective, verb, etc.). Do not try to read everything in detail; only focus on the key words. With practice, you will be able to predict with a certain level of precision. Even if you find it difficult, trying to make a prediction will always help you concentrate on the task, thus making it a lot more manageable and understandable.

Becoming a successful candidate takes time and practice. Unless you have had enough practice in English, you won’t probably be able to get your desired score. Keep in mind that most standardized exams are more about skills than knowledge.

1The underlined term “educated guesses” in Paragraph 3 can be replaced with _____.

A.efforts to achieve high scores B.quick decisions about the choice

C.better options using the same words D.predictions with a certain level of precision

2What should be stressed more in a standardized listening test according to the passage?

    A.Skills. B.Vocabulary. C.Scores. D.Knowledge.

3Who do you think the passage is intended for?

    A.Teachers. B.Managers. C.Speakers. D.Candidates.

  • 29、A bicycle may be seen by most people as just another vehicle(交通工具), but for many Londoners, cycling is a way of life. According to a UK government survey in 2017, about 570, 000 bike journeys were made every day in London. In fact, almost half of the vehicles that pass over London Bridge each day are bikes.

London introduced a public bike-sharing system in 2010. “There can be no doubt that our trusty bicycles have changed the way people get around our great city,” Johnson told The Guardian in 2015.

In London, bikes are used for more than just taking short trips to and from the subway. No matter where you want to go in the city, riding a bike is usually the quickest and easiest choice.

And it’s not just shared bikes that the government is encouraging people to ride. In many companies across the UK, the UK government’s Cycle to Work scheme(计划)allows workers to buy a brand new bike without having to pay any tax(税). This means that it's common to see many people cycling to and from work, and some companies even provide showers and lockers in the workplaces for their workers. More importantly, a cycle-friendly boss may let you off for being late if you ride a bike to work.

Not only is it great for the environment and our body, cycling is also good for the mind. According to National Geographic Magazine, “Bike riding can improve people’s happiness.”

【1】How does the author show the popularity of cycling in London?

    A.By using numbers.

    B.By giving examples.

    C.By making comparisons.

    D.By using famous sayings.

【2】What’s Johnson’s attitude towards the bike-sharing system in London?

    A.Disappointed.

    B.Concerned.

    C.Supportive.

    D.Uninterested.

【3】What can workers get from the government under the Cycle to Work scheme?

    A.Free bike-sharing services.

    B.Showers and lockers in workplaces.

    C.Shorter working hours.

    D.Tax-free bikes.

【4】Which of the following can be the best title of the passage?

A.Cycling, a healthy way of life

B.How cycling has become popular in London

C.Why Londoners are encouraged to ride bikes

    D.London’s public bike-sharing system
