二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 26、My elephant adventures began in 1984 when, with our one-year-old daughter, my husband and I crossed the jungle in a jeep, slicking behind a lorry for comfort and company. The elephants standing like watchers on either side of the forest highway had us praying for our safety. One elephant made loud noise and angrily pawed (抓) the ground, warning us off. We raced away before they could attack.

It was wise to keep elephants at a distance. We heard stories of tourists whose jeeps were overturned, and a couple of photographers were killed because they moved too close. Elephants are misleading animals. They give people an impression of being quiet and kind, so tourists think it’s safe to picnic in the jungle (丛林). Yet angry elephants have knocked them down in seconds before they could take off.

Elephants might make life unpredictable and dangerous. It’s difficult for inexperienced environmentalists to even, begin to grasp this reality. I’ve heard city people say “ We humans are encroaching (侵害) on their forests.” But what’s the solution?

When a poor farmer borrows heavily to plant a crop, he’ll do anything to protect it His life depends on it Elephants ruining an about-to-be-harvested com field cannot expect to be welcomed like special guests. The battle between beast and farmer is violent.

Experts are working on solutions to human-elephant conflicts (冲突). Some are sure to fail to like the plans to build electric fences around human settlements. Elephants rapidly figure them out and come in, around and over them.

There are more questions than answers, for sure. But as my husband said, “More people die in car accidents every single day, in every city on the earth. But they won’t take cars off the roads, will they?” So we need to seek practical ways of preventing elephant accidents.

【1】What is the writer’s purpose in writing Paragraph 1?

A.To tell readers her family’s experience of elephant adventure.

B.To show readers elephants are angry and dangerous,

C.To introduce the topic of the whole passage.

D.To describe how her family keep away from elephants.

【2】Why do tourists think it is safe to picnic in the jungle?

A.They think elephants are quiet and kind.

B.They haven’t heard the stories of elephant killing people.

    C.They like elephants too much.

D.They think they can race away in seconds.

【3】What docs a poor farmer do to protect his crop?

    A.Welcome elephant like special guests.

B.Fight with elephants for his harvest.

    C.Stop planting crops.

D.Depend on elephants for his life.

【4】What can we learn from the last two paragraphs?

A.It is a good idea to build electric fences around human settlements.

B.It is impossible to find a solution to settle human-elephant conflict.

C.We should first reduce car accidents to prevent elephant accidents.

D.It is our duly to protect elephants rather than kill them.

  • 27、   We know more about the surface of the planet Mars than we know about what is at the bottom of Earth’s oceans. Until recently, scientists had mapped only about 20 percent of the sea floor. But our knowledge of the deep seas is changing because of information from satellites. Scientists have produced a new map that provides a detailed picture of the oceans.

The new map is twice as detailed as the map made 20 years ago. David Sandwell is a geophysics professor at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography at the University of California. He and other scientists worked on the mapping project. He says they turned to space to look deeper into the ocean.

“The way we’re doing that is to use a satellite altimeter(测高仪), a radar to map the topography(地形) of the ocean surface. That is because the ocean surface topography is different because of gravitational(引力的) effects.”

The scientists collected and studied information from two satellites. One was the European Space Agency’s Cryo-2 satellite that was placed in Earth’s orbit to watch sea ice. The other satellite is the American space agency’s Jason-1, studying the surface of the oceans. Scientists combined the satellite data with images gathered by equipment on ships. The equipment works by sending sound waves through the water. When the sound waves hit an object, its presence is confirmed.

The new map shows the sea floor as it has never been seen before. It shows thousands of underwater mountains and places where continents pulled apart. It shows where earthquakes were active many years ago. In one place, three mountain ridges(山脊) join at the same area. “It’s called the Indian Ocean Triple Junction. It’s one of my favorite spots in the ocean. You have three plates-the African plate, and the Indo-Australian plate and the Antarctic plate-all connected at this one point in the center of the Indian Ocean,” says David Sandwell.

The map is a powerful tool for those interested in protecting the environment and for oil exploration. It also can help ships travel safely and improve scientific projects worldwide. Of course, scientists will make many more discoveries as they examine the new map and the information it provides.

1We can owe the success of the new mapping project to________.

A.the details of the old map

    B.Europe’s cooperation with America

C.Scientists’ continual measuring work under the sea

D.The application of radar and sound wave measuring equipment

2What does the underlined sentence in paragraph 2 mean?

A.They hoped to use space technology to map the ocean floor.

B.They wanted the satellite to produce the map.

C.They had never explored the deeper ocean.

D.They decided to search the outer space.

3What is mainly talked about in paragraph 4?

A.The function of sound waves. B.The difference of two satellites.

C.The difficulties of mapping the oceans D.The process of mapping the ocean floor.

4The fifth paragraph is used to______.

A.show the discovery through the new map

B.Prove the earthquakes were active under the ocean

C.Explain how the ocean floor developed

D.Introduce what the underwater mountains were like

5What would be the best title for the text?

A.How to Explore the Deep Sea

B.How to Get Pictures of the Ocean

C.Scientists Create New Maps of Ocean Floor

D.Much of the Sea Floor Waits for Exploration

  • 28、   Luke has always been my closest and constant companion these past five years. In fact, he is very friendly to me especially when I take care of other furry friends in our shelter.

There have been a lot of forest fires during the summer season. Not far from our shelter, a forest caught fire during this hot summer. Luke rushed towards the forest where flames send out a terrible heat. There’s no longer any hope at the moment to wait for Luke to come back to the shelter. In fact, I was waiting for the firemen to announce me his death in the forest. Suddenly, a fireman burst into my office and informed me that my dog Luke succeeded in saving four cats which were trapped by the flames. Luke seized the kittens, one by one moving them to a safe place.

I immediately accompanied the fireman to the forest to pick up the rescued kittens, but Luke was not there. Then we heard the sound of a dog came from the forest barking furiously. The firemen followed the tracks of the dog until they found him barking loudly by the side of an injured fireman who was lying on the ground.

That day, I was very proud of Luke for his two heroic actions. I paid a visit to the fireman accompanied with my adorable Luke. What a memorable scene when the fireman hugged Luke tightly to his chest! “One thousand thanks, Luke, for saving my life,” the fireman said.

3What does the underlined word “belittle” in the last paragraph probably mean?

    A. Make things small. B. Look down upon.

    C. Live up to. D. Think highly of.

4What is the author’s purpose in writing the passage?

    A. To stress the role of pets in people life.

    D. To share a story of love and care from pets with us.

  • 29、   Technology offers conveniences such as opening the garage door from your car or changing the television station without touching the TV.

Now one American company is offering its employees a new convenience: a microchip implanted in their hands. Employees who have these chips can do all kinds of things just by waving their hands. Three Square Market is offering to implant microchips in all of their employees for free. Each chip costs $300 and Three Square Market will pay for the chip. Employees can volunteer to have the chips implanted in their hands. About 50 out of 80 employees have chosen to do so. The president of the company, his wife and their children are also getting chips implanted in their hands.

The chip is about the size of a grain of rice. Implanting the chip only takes about a second and is said to hurt only very briefly. The chips go under the skin between the thumb and forefinger. With a chip in the hand, a person can enter the office building, buy food, sign into computers and more, simply by waving that hand near a scanner. The chips will be also used to identify employees. Employees who want convenience, but do not want to have a microchip implanted under their skin, can wear a wristband (腕带) or a ring with a chip instead. They can perform the same tasks with a wave of their hands as if they had an implanted chip.

Three Square Market is the first company in the United Slates to offer to implant chips in its employees. Epicenter, a company in Sweden, has been implanting chips in its employees for a while.

Three Square Market says the chip cannot track the employees. The company says scanners can read the chips only when they are within a few inches of them. “The chips protect against identity theft, similar to credit cards.” The U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved the chips back in 2004, so they should be safe for humans, according to the company.

In the future, people with the chips may be able to do more with them, even outside the office. Todd Westby is Chief Executive Officer of Three Square Market. He says, “Eventually, this technology will become standardized allowing you to use this as your passport, public transit, all purchasing opportunities, etc.”

1What is the third paragraph mainly about?

    A.The substitutes of the chips.

B.The potential risks of implanting the chips.

C.The places to implant the chips.

    D.The advantages of the chips.

2What does the underlined word “them” in Paragraph 5 refer to?

    A.the hands B.the scanners

    C.the employees D.the credit cards

    3We can infer that ________.

    A.the chips have magic powers

B.the price of the chips is reasonable

C.the chips are very popular among the employees

D.most people suspect the application of the chips

In Times of Crists, We Need Classical Music

It’s still lying in front of me on my desk. The booklet, entitled Time for Outrange(愤怒) , was written by the 93-year-old French diplomat(外交官) Stephane Hessel. “The power of money,” Hessel says, filled with anger, “has never been as great and selfish and 1 as it is now.”

But what does the outrage of this Frenchman have to do with classical music and , ultimately, with me, music director of the Orchestre Symphenique de Montreal(蒙特利尔交响乐团) ?

A lot, I, too, am outraged by the direction of industrial society, with materialism and consumerism leading the way. I want to show that, because of its powerful impact, classical music can play a(n) 2 role right now.

We all sense that our society is experiencing an almost revolutionary 3. Life is getting faster, competition is fiercer and social cohesion(凝聚力) is reducing. Like most people, I have no idea how liberty and civil rights would develop in the era of globalization and ever-evolving technological advancement.

But I see this as an opportunity for a(n) 4 to classical music. The great symphonies of Haydn, Mozart and Beethoven are not museum pieces we should listen to only if we want to 5 ourselves with some music history. Now are they a decoration or a relaxation exercise for the quickened pace of life.

They are more than what a radio station for classical music once promised - “your oasis(绿洲) of well-being.” They are timeless compositions that 6 all the uncertainties and insecurities of this new period. They can support us in our search for meaning. Beethoven, for example, was convinced that man had the capacity to change for the better and to go throughout life. This is why there is so much hope in his music. His symphonies was mean to 7 people forward.

Classic music 8 our senses and emotions in such a way that we were thrown back onto ourselves. It 9 to listeners to make use of their own reason and reflect on their actions. Music’s sole purpose is to be experienced. That experience, in turn, is why music can change our perceptions(认知) of ourselves and thereby our interactions with others.

10 to explain this powerful impact of music will always remain unsatisfying, but this much is certain: aesthetic(审美的) experiences can transform people.

  • 32、概要写作

The journey to the moon has been the first step toward future exploration(探险) in space. The distance between the moon and the earth is very short indeed when compared with the distances between the earth and the other planets. Mars, one of the nearest planets to the earth, is millions of miles away. Travelling to the planets will be man’s next aim. Such travels will be more challenging than the trip to the moon and certainly more adventurous.

Recently, two American spaceships, Vikings 1 and 2 landed on Mars trying to discover whether there is any life on the planet. So far the signs of life on Mars has neither confirmed nor ruled out.(排除)

Russians have discovered that the surface of Venus(金星)is so hot that it is almost certain that there is no life there. Also the atmosphere of Venus is extremely dense and the pressure is nearly a hundred times greater than that of the earth’s atmosphere.

Scientists believe man may find planets which have the same conditions as those we have on the earth, but man should realize the earth will be his only home for a long time and begin to love and care about it.
