二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 26、   “Children who eat three or more hamburgers a week are more likely to suffer from asthma (哮喘),” researchers say. However, they say that the risk may not be caused by the meat-rich diet itself, but by a lack of fresh fruit and vegetables.

The study looked into 50,000 children from 20 countries. Parents were asked about their children’s eating habits and whether they had ever suffered from asthma. The effects of their diet seemed to be different depending on where they lived. Fruit and vegetables are more helpful in less rich parts of the world, while eating lots of fish was more helpful in richer countries. Eating at least three hamburgers a week was linked to a greater risk of asthma, but only in wealthier countries.

Dr. Gabriele Nagel said different things may cause asthma in different parts of the world. “This gives us more understanding of how asthma affects different people, and its effects in developing as well as developed countries,” she said.

High levels of unhealthy fat in hamburgers could increase the risk of asthma. However, the researchers said children who ate several hamburgers a week might have other unhealthy lifestyle habits as well.

Researchers said the study helped us understand how asthma and diets are connected. “Previous (先前的) studies have shown that a diet rich in fruit and vegetables can help to reduce a child’s risk of developing asthma symptoms (症状),” Dr. Elaine Vickers said. “Our advice to parents is to make sure that children have a healthy diet and also get plenty of exercise.”

1What can we know about asthma from paragraph 1?

A.The danger of it is common among children. B.Children who eat hamburgers suffer from it.

C.Lack of fruit and vegetables may cause it. D.The meat-rich diets can make it much worse.

2What did parents do in the study?

A.They provided information about children’s eating habits.

B.They helped look into children from different countries.

C.They compared the effects of children’s diets right away.

D.They changed their children’s eating habits on purpose.

3What do the researchers say about the study?

A.It shows fruit and vegetables stop children from developing asthma.

B.It is based on previous studies but the results are quite different.

C.It is helpful for them to know the relation between asthma and diets.

D.It offers many suggestions to parents and children on a healthy diet.

4What is the best title for the text?

A.The Risk of Asthma Is High in Wealthier Countries

B.Unhealthy Eating Habits May Lead to Asthma

C.Eating Hamburgers Increases the Risk of Asthma

D.Hamburgers Are Really Bad for People’s Health

  • 27、   Vegetarianism is growing in popularity in a lot of countries. And now, South Africa is one of them. Today, more and more South Africans are experimenting with the vegetarian (素食者)way of life by cutting meat out of their diet.

Some others are exploring veganism. Vegans (纯素者)are similar to vegetarians but they avoid all animal-based products, including milk and eggs. Some vegans even do not eat honey. There is no official count of how many vegans there are in South Africa. But the interest has led to the birth of vegetarian and vegan restaurants in Johannesburg, the nation's economic center. And this year, Africa's first big vegan and plant-based festival was held in Cape Town. The Vegan &. Plant Powered Show took place at the end of May.

But veganism can be a lonely road for many South Africans. The country is Africa's top consumer of meat from cows, pigs and sheep, based on information from the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development. Many South Africans express shock at the thought of giving up meat, which is central to celebrations and spirituality.

This is an issue for many African vegans, including Anesu Mbizvo. "In African traditional culture, a big part of a family's worth is their livestock (家畜),which decide the wealth of a family. And so when an African kills an animal at a gathering, it's thought that he would give away his wealth. "  But she adds, "Offering home-grown vegetables would not be considered to be valuable. I think that thought mainly prevents some people of African cultures from being vegans."

Some South Africans are finding their path somewhere in the middle. Thirty-one-year-old Thandiwe Ngubeni is a communications specialist. She still eats meat-but less and less of it as time goes by. "I feel more energetic when I eat a vegan meal. It actually gives me more energy.

1What can we learn about vegans?

    A.They can drink milk.

    B.They eat some animal meat.

    C.They enjoy opening vegan restaurants.

D.They refuse any product based on animals.

2What mainly stops some Africans being vegans according to Anesu Mbizvo?

A.Too many animals in the wild. B.Traditional views of livestock.

C.The influence from other countries. D.Not enough vegetables in the restaurant.

3What do we know about Thandiwe  Ngubeni?

    A.She is a vegan.

    B.She is an animal specialist.

C.She looks forward to eating much more meat.

D.She has a limit on the amount of meat she eats.

4What can be the best title for the text?

    A.Vegans' Behaviors Are Too Extreme

B.Vegetarians Are Not Popular Any Longer

C.Many South Africans Welcome a Vegan Lifestyle

D.Meat in South Africa Will Become Less Delicious

  • 28、Humankind has tried to improve its standard of living since the very beginning of civilization. Back then, as well as today, providing food and security was the basic task for a person. However, nowadays the range of required goods has expanded significantly. People feel the need for not only some primary things, such as a piece of bread and a roof over their heads, but also for various facilities and luxuries. Providing humanity with these things is connected to the use of natural resources, which requires energy. In turn, the common sources of energy we use today cause pollution, so economic growth is almost unavoidably associated with environmental damage.

Economic growth is the increase in numbers of goods and services produced over time by an economy, and it is calculated in terms of real Gross Domestic Product (GDP). Before growth is calculated, inflation (通货膨胀)is adjusted in order to take into account its misleading effect on the price of goods and services. Economic growth can also be explained as the increase in expected output, which results from an increase in actual output, or total demand.

There are certain aspects of economic growth which affect the environment. The first of these is the fact that in order to produce more goods and products, at a faster rate, the construction of large industrial plants is required. These plants produce a lot of waste, leading to the pollution of water and the atmosphere, which may cause negative long term health effects to nearby populations of animals, or people.___They___also lead to global warming.

Industrial manufacturing leads to the constantly increasing energy consumption. The traditional energy sources, which are commonly used nowadays, are considered to be the greatest polluters to the environment. There also exist so-called eco-friendly sources of energy. They are sometimes preferred but replacing the traditional sources with them also requires time, during which people have to make some sacrifices to support these undertakings.

In order to produce economically practical energy, a sometimes significant transformation of the natural site is often inevitable. This is expensive and, has harmful effects on the environment. Application of wind energy would block airflows’ natural speed which is the reason for their decrease in strength, after crossing the windmill. Consequently, the pressure balance that is brought about by this current will be affected, and it is important to remember that the environment and weather conditions are directly affected by atmospheric pressure.

For these reasons, bringing about economic growth without any resulting environmental damage, whatsoever, is impossible.

【1】What does the passage mainly talk about?

    A.Pollution caused by plant construction.

A.economic growth should be calculated in terms of GDP

B.use of natural resources causes no damage to the environment

C.industrial manufacturing may cause damage to the environment

D.a windmill is a perfect way to produce economically practical energy

【4】Which of the following shows the structure of the passage?

    A.

  • 29、   People made wings and strapped them to their arms. They flapped their arms but couldn’t fly. They built gliders(滑翔机), light aircraft with wings. Some didn’t work, but some did.

The gliders that worked had special wings. These wings were arched on both the top and the bottom. The air pulled the wings from above and pushed the wings from below. When the wings went up, so did the glider! Arched wings help create a force called lift. Lift is the force that keeps the gliders in the air.

Most gliders have long, thin wings. The wings create enough lift to carry the aircraft and its passengers. Gliders usually ride currents of air the same way a hawk soars(飞翔).

Gliders are very light, and long wings and air currents can give them enough lift to fly. But to carry more than just a passenger or two, an aircraft needs a lot more lift. The question is: How do you create more lift?

    The engine is the answer!

The engine is a machine that changes energy into movement. The forward movement that an airplane needs to fly is called thrust. More thrust makes an airplane move forward faster. Moving faster creates more lift. And with more lift, an airplane can carry more weight so an aircraft with an engine can carry passengers or cargo.

In 1903 the Wright brothers figured out how to get wings and an engine to work together in order to give an airplane enough thrust to fly. They made the first powered flight at Kitty Hawk, North Carolina.

Since then people have made airplanes that can fly faster than sound can travel. They have made airplanes that can fly all the way around the world without stopping.

Today, thousands of people travel in airplanes every day. People really have learned how to fly!

1If a flyer wants to stay in the air, it needs enough ________.

    A.lift B.thrust

    C.wings D.engines

2What made the flyers moving forward in the sky?

    A.The air. B.The lift.

    C.The thrust. D.The wind.

3An airplane can carry heavy weight and fly very fast mostly because of ________.

    A.the lift B.the thrust

    C.the sound D.the engine

4The whole passage mainly tells us ________.

A.how gliders were built B.how important the engine was

C.how people learned to fly D.how the first airplane was made

  • 31、Directions: Complete the following passages by using the words in the box. Each word can only be used once. Note that there is one word more than you need.

Hundreds of years ago, Charles Darwin predicted that facial expressions of emotion are 1. If you’ve ever seen an episode of the popular US TV drama Lie To Me, you will really understand facial expressions. The leading actor of the show, Dr. Cal Lightman has spent 20 years studying nonverbal communication and facial expressions, which allows him to point out other people’s studying nonverbal communication and facial expressions which allows him to point out other people’s 2 and on many occasions, to be skilled at tricking in order to get the truth.

Is there really much truth behind this science of 3 human emotions through expressions? Paul Ekman, a(n) 4 psychologist whose work focuses on mapping facial expressions, is Lie To Me’s scientific advisor and the following are some of his explanations.

    Hand-to-face gesture indicates a lie.

Each micro-expression is unique to 5 specific emotions because the person is often unaware of doing it. But it doesn’t necessarily mean that they are lying when someone uses a hand to hide part of his face. The person could be holding back information but you may better consider looking at other more important clues rather than just the simple hand-to-face gesture.

    A liar refuses eye contact.

People look away when they are thinking carefully and considering each word before it is spoken, not just when they are 6 an excuse. Oblique eyebrows are a very reliable 7of sadness and few people can make this 8 expression, so it is actually never faked.

    Guilty knowledge technique is 9.

Lightman often uses the guilty knowledge technique, mentioning something that only the guilty person will know about and show a(n)10. This is often used in polygraph exams: “Was the person strangled, shot or stabbed to death?” Only the killer knows and is likely to respond physiologically when the actual weapon is mentioned.

Tyra Winters was a high school student in Texas. One day, she was marching towards her home after the school day. As she slowly made her way down the street, the 17-year-old was enthusiastically planning the coming weekend party with her best friends, thinking of all the music, laughter, and excitement.

All of a sudden, a horrific scream was heard in the street. Turning back, Winters saw a boy about two years old lying on the sidewalk. And his wild mother was begging for help. “Someone help me, someone help me”. The little boy, Clarke Hornback, as his mother told, had been sucking on a piece of candy when it slid down the back of his mouth. It was stuck in his throat and blocked his windpipe (气管). Clarke’s face was bright red. “There was no coughing; there was no breathing!” Clarke’s mother, Nicole Hornback cried in great panic.

The crowds soon gathered around the poor boy and the mother. The boy was just gasping (喘气) for air. No one seemed to know how to help.

Except for Winters, who had always had dreams of becoming a surgeon for children! She had learned the first aid knowledge for treating choking. It was time for her to save the boy’s life. Knowing that the clock was ticking, she ran to the child.

    Paragraph 1:

By the time Winters got to Clarke, the boy’s face had tuned purple.
