二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 26、   Nowadays, we live in a strict and judgmental world where people are quick to point out the faults of others and yet seem to ignore their own ones. Some misguided souls believe they have a moral duty to help you be a better person telling you what a failure you really are.

If you're the one placing criticism upon others, please stop. Make a conscious decision, rather than focus on the negative aspect of a person's performance or attitudes, and you can offer helpful suggestions. If I'm painting a living room and making a mess in doing so, I'd have any husband say to me, "This is a tough job. Can I offer a suggestion that might make it easier for you?" rather than have him point out what a careless painter I am.

If you're on the receiving end of criticism, the "OK" response is a perfect solution. When someone comments negatively on a task you're doing, the natural response is to defend and attack. However, this approach is rarely effective as it puts both parties on the defensive. It diffuses a potentially explosive situation which might cause serious consequences. It's important to keep calm and listen without feeling, to be an objective observer. There is much that one can learn from a negative review. You can ask yourself: Could I have done better, and been more thoughtful? Did I give 100% of myself to the task at hand? Is there any truth in what the other person says? If so, how can I improve?

In any event, one should remember the saying, "Stop judging and you will not be judged. Stop condemning (指责) and you will not be condemned." One can learn to be "OK" with criticism and not allow it to negatively impact his or her relationship with the other party. Let it go and that will be "OK".

1According to the author, what would today's people like to do?

A.They ignore the mistakes of others.

B.They focus on how to handle mistakes.

C.They like to point out the mistakes of others.

D.They have a moral duty to help others with failure.

2What is the proper response to criticism in the author's opinion?

A.Paying no attention to it B.Learning something from it.

C.Making excuses for your mistakes. D.Defending and attacking.

3Which of the following best explains "diffuses" underlined in Paragraph 3?

    A.spreads B.challenges C.reduces D.explains

4Which would be the best title for this passage?

A.Is criticism really necessaryin our relationships?

B.What can you learn from criticism?

C.What's the best way to voice criticism?

D.How to treat criticism as a giver and a receiver?

  • 27、   Youth volunteers from Beijing University visited Songtang Hospital,a care clinic for the aged and dying patients, during the second Global Youth Service Day on April 21.

Thirty student volunteers from the university’s School of International Studies sat at the beds of the patients in their specially-decorated“care huts”.They talked with them and gave massages(按摩)to patients kept in their beds.

“I felt sorry that I could not offer more to these people than talking with them and trying to cheer them up.”said Deng Yetao,20,a third-year student.“But it occurred to me that they need more care and love than babies. They are afraid of the coming death.Their loneliness is worse than physical pains.”

    The Rabbit Listened

Taylor’s amazing wood-block tower has been ruined by birds, and he’s not sure what to do with his feelings about that. The bear thinks he should get angry; the ostrich thinks he should ignore it; and the hyena thinks he should laugh it off. Then the rabbit comes over and listens to what Taylor thinks, and that helps him figure out what he wants to do next. Ages 3-5.

Coming to Haiti every December from America to spend time with her Aunt Luce, a little girl drinks in the sights and sounds of a town with excitement: “Buses painted with soccer stars.” Aunt Luce is an artist with portraits of Haiti’s heroes lining her studio walls, and every year the little girl asks, “Will you paint me this time, please?” Ages 4-8.

    Marwan’s Journey

Those are all gone now and his mother is no longer with him, but Marwan hears her voice telling him to keep walking until he finds a new home. Ages 5-7.

    The Old Man

A homeless old man shies away from the rush of the city, searching for a warm and quiet place to rest. He is invisible, noticed only when he’s considered to be in the way, and tiredly, cautiously, shuffles (拖着脚走) through the streets. • 29、   US President Donald Trump on Friday called on the US to accelerate 5G deployment(部署).“The race to 5G is a race America must win,“Trump stressed,“We want to be the leader in this.”Trump said that 5G networks must be“guarded from the enemy—and we do have enemies out there.”It should be “private sector driven and private sector led,”but his administration is"removing regularity barriers to the buildout of networks.”Trump also vowed to extend broadband access to rural area, and“no matter where you are you will have access very quickly to 5G,”

Trump's words remind us of the US competition with the Soviet Union during the Cold War.The US’ overt crackdown(镇压) on Huawei is closely related to the country's 5G strategic deployment. While suppressing China's telecom giant, the US is mobilizing its own 5G development.Washington is quite narrow—minded.

Chinese companies including Huawei and ZTE have developed their 5G technology in line with the market rules. They may have never prepared for state competitions, nor harbored ambitions to challenge the global geopolitical landscape. Those low—key Chinese enterprises aim at doing better and making more money. They pursue technological leadership merely to survive and develop. It is exaggerating to regard 5G development as a decisive factor in national competitions.

Washington is launching a national mobilization to develop 5G technology. The approach is like taking a“great leap forward,"which is not cool—headed.

US technical mobilization ability is undoubtedly strong. However, the core competitiveness of the internet lies not only in technology but also in application conditions. As more and more people flood into cities, China has a dense urban population with a high average usage rate of base stations, making China's network infrastructure full of market driving force.

The US should give up the fantasy to be an "all—round champion"in the 5G era. Although it will still lead in the overall technological level in the long run, the country should accept the fact that it will be surpassed by China in certain specific fields of 5G. To be a normal powerful country, the US must first have a broad mind.

1Which words can best describe Trump's character?

    A. narrow—minded and aggressive B. cool—headed and peace—loving

    C. considerate and full of ambition D. determined and imaginative

2What's the main reason for the US' overt crackdown on Huawei?

    A. Huawei has developed its 5G technology against the market rules.

    B. The US wants to be the leader in 5G.

    C. Huawei has earned more dollars than Apple.

    D. Huawei doesn't keep a low key profile in dealing with American businessmen.

3What can we infer from the passage?

    A. The US is an abnormal powerful country in every aspect in the world.

    B. Android app is more powerful and useful than IOS app with 5G.

    C. With more and more subscribers in the city, China has an advantage in developing 5G.

    D. The US will lead in the overall technological level in the long term.

4What can be a suitable title for the text?

    A. Where there is a smartphone, there is a Huawei

    B. A New Era:5G Technology

    C. A Long Way to Go for Huawei

    D. US to Launch ‘Great Leap Forward’ Campaign in 5G

Driving an electric car 1 to the protection of environment, or so the marketing departments of their makers would have you believe. Yet a report which analyzes car emissions presents a rather different picture. A battery-powered car recharged with 2 generated by coal-fired power stations, it found, is likely to be more harmful. It could cause more than three times as many deaths from pollution as a 3 petrol-driven vehicle.

The study was carried out by the University of Minnesota. The researchers estimated how levels of fine particulate matter (细颗粒物) and ground-level ozone two important 4 of air pollution — would change when a car is powered by different ways.

It was no surprise that electric cars whose batteries were recharged with power from wind, solar or hydro-electric sources came out to be virtually free from harmful 5. They were estimated to cause 231 deaths over the course of a year, compared with 878 for petrol cars. Electric cars recharged with power from natural gas-fired stations were also a lot less harmful than petrol-driven ones, with 439 deaths. But if those same electric cars were recharged 6 by coal, they would be responsible for over 3,000 deaths.

Biofuels also caused more health problems than petrol. But diesel, which often  7 concern about pollution, is slightly cleaner than petrol. This is because the study assumes for all cars that emission-control technologies will be more widely used, especially particulate filters which have a remarkable effect on cleaning diesel 8. Diesel cars are also more 9 of fuel than petrol-driven ones.

Overall, the study shows that electric cars are cleaner than those traditional vehicles only if the power used to charge then is also clean. That is hardly a surprise, but the 10 of the difference is. How green electric cars really are, then, will depend mainly on where they are driven. In France, which obtains more than half of its power from nuclear station, electric cars look like a good bet. In China and some other developing countries, where a large amount of electricity is produced from coal, they may not be so environment- friendly as they are marketed.

  • 37、Directions: Complete the following sentences by using the proper form of the words or expressions given in the frame. Each one can only be used once.

Why your Password May Not Be As Safe As It Seems?  Does “qaz2ws” strike you as a nice safe password? What about “adgjmptw”? An analysis has found them to be among the passwords that are most 1 used, which of course means they are not secure at all.

When ten million passwords were leaked on to the internetthey appeared to 2that attempts by internet security experts to make us improve our password strength had been successful, even if, in the specific case of the leaked passwords, they are also completely pointless.

While many of the passwords were still single words, such as “password”there was also a clear attempt by many to make them harder to3. The problem was that people seemed to do so in the same way.

“Users are becoming slightly more 4what makes a password strong,” explained WP Engine, an internet company that performed the analysis. “For instance, adding a number or two at the end of a text phrase. That makes it better, right?”

But 5no. They found that almost half a million passwords did this and in 20 percent of those all people did was put the number “1” at the end.

Perhaps this is why some companies are now trying to move gradually beyond passwords. Yahoo! is giving users the option to 6 their mobile phone with an account, having a single use passwords texted to it each time they want to log on.

Although the serviced is voluntary, Dylan Casey an executive at Yahoo!said that it was “the first step to7passwords”. He said it was a(n)8that it was increasingly hard for people to remember all the passwords they had. “I don’t think we, as an industry, have done a good enough job of putting ourselves in the shoes of the people using our products,” he said.

It would certainly be a more sensible strategy than same people’s improving upon “password” by using “password” or“tran5p053d numb3r5 f0r 133tr3r5”.

“We are, for the most partpredictably9when it comes to choosing passwords, despite a decade of warnings from password strength checkers during sign-ups” said WP Engine. “We love taking a(n) 10, and so do password crackers.
