二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 26、   “It’s raining, it’s pouring. The old man is snoring (打鼾). He bumped his head when he went to bed, and he couldn’t get up in the morning.” Why couldn’t the old man in the children’s song get up? (Let’s kindly suppose that he just didn’t want to get up.) This was possibly because in the absence of sunlight, the body was still producing the hormone melatonin (褪黑素), which makes people sleepy.

There are many ways that rainfall affects human behavior. But how much does rain really affect people’s moods and behavior?

In 2008, researchers from the University of Minnesota and Lanzhou University published a paper. They proposed that decreased rainfall was influential in social upheaval (社会动荡) and the downfall of the Tang, Yuan and Ming dynasties in ancient China. This is thought to be related to reduced rice cultivation.

But how might rain affect social behavior in the modern world? A 2009 New York Times  investigation found that murder rates in New York drop significantly on rainy days. Meanwhile, in Britain, Dr. Peter Langmead-Jones of Greater Manchester police published a study in 2015 detailing an analysis of 6.6 million police records over one decade in Manchester. “The research showed that the heavier the rainfall, the lower the recorded crime,” he said.

Langmead-Jones also found that there is a strong association between heavy rain and relatively few violent crimes recorded including domestic abuse. This might be because heavy rain stops people from going out to buy alcohol and the reduced alcohol consumption results in fewer crimes.

It’s not all good news though. One study in 1997 concluded that the behavior of children can predict oncoming storms — they were observed to exhibit their worst behavior when barometric pressure (气压) fell. Another study in 2012 found that women are much more likely to be affected psychologically by rain and that they report much lower levels of life satisfaction than men on rainy days.

For all the complaints about rain, it does have some characteristics that hold broad appeal. The sound of raindrops can be very comforting and often features in sleep-inducing relaxation apps. The theory behind this is that the pitter-patter of raindrops is a form of “pink noise.” It can decrease brain activity and consequently improves the quality of sleep. So if it’s raining where you are, the best thing to do may be to have a nap.

1The author uses the lyrics of a song in the first paragraph to _______.

A.introduce the interesting song to readers

B.voice his understanding of why the old man couldn’t get up in the morning

C.illustrate one way that wet weather influences human behavior

D.explain why people often get up late on rainy days

2According to Dr. Peter Langmead-Jones, relatively few crimes are recorded on rainy days because _______.

A.people prefer to take a nap at home when it’s raining

B.most people are depressed on rainy days

C.people are too lazy to go out when it’s raining

D.alcohol consumption is reduced due to wet weather

3According to the article, the influences that rainy days have on human behavior include _______.

    decreased grain output

    relatively few criminal records

higher chance of feeling low in spirits

    more possibility of feeling sleepy

    A.①②③ B.①②④

    C.①③④ D.②③④

4According to the last paragraph, what’s the positive impact of rain on human behavior?

A.The sound of raindrops helps people sleep better.

B.On rainy days, all people can get more sleep.

C.It offers a good chance to listen to relaxing music.

D.People feel more satisfied with themselves when it’s raining.

  • 28、When leaning a foreign language, most people fall back on traditional methods: reading, writing, listening and repeating. But if you also gesture with your arms while studying, you can remember the vocabulary better, even months later. Linking a word to brain areas responsible for movement strengthens the memory of its meaning.

As neuroscientist Brian Mathias and his colleagues describe in the Journal of Neuroscience, they had 22 German-speaking adults learn a total of 90 invented artificial words (such as “lamube” for “camera,” and “atesi” for “thought”) over four days. While the test subjects first heard the new vocabulary, they were simultaneously (同时地) shown a video of a person making a gesture that matched the meaning of the word. When the word was repeated, they were supposed to perform the gesture themselves. Five months later, they were asked to translate the vocabulary they had learned into German in a multiple-choice test.

At the same time, they had a device attached to their heads that sent weak pulses to their primary motor cortex (皮层) — the brain area that controls voluntary arm movements. When these interfering (干扰) signals were active, the subjects found it harder to recall the words accompanied by gestures. When the device sent no interfering signals (but still appeared to the subjects to be active), they found it easier to remember the words. The researchers concluded that the motor cortex contributed to the translation of the vocabulary learned with gestures. This applied to concrete words, such as “camera,” as well as abstract ones, such as “thought”.

“Our results provide evidence for why learning techniques that involve the body’s motor system should be used more often,” says Mathias. “I think we underuse gesture in our classrooms. People use it spontaneously (自发地), if they’re good teachers and good listeners. But we don’t necessarily bring it into the class if we don’t think about it.”

【1】What were the subjects required to do in the test?

    A.Repeat what other subjects describe.

B.Follow what the person in the video did.

C.Match the vocabulary with relative pictures.

D.Translate the vocabulary into a foreign language.

【2】Why were pulses sent to the subjects’ motor cortex?

    A.To control their body movements.

    B.To shelter other interfering signals.

C.To identify the function of the motor cortex.

D.To confirm the abstract thoughts in their mind.

【3】What is Brian Mathias’s expectation of the research?

A.It will be carried out more frequently.

B.It will involve more concrete objects.

C.It will be plied to classroom teaching.

D.It will motivate his colleagues to participate.

【4】What is the best title for the text?

    A.Good Learning Techniques Matter More

    B.Repeating Strengthens Memory

    C.Body Language Betters Communication

    D.Gestures Help Learn New Words

  • 29、   When life gives you lemons, make lemonade, yes, and drink all of them. Then you're ready for an adventure.

Researchers from the University of Sussex in England say they have found for the first time experimental evidence that sour tastes lead to more risk-taking behaviour in a paper published on 7 June, 2019.

In the study, 168 volunteers from the UK and Vietnam were given a 20ml solution representing one of the five main taste groups: bitter, salty, sour, sweet and umami. The tasters then took part in a computerized test that measures risk-taking: they got paid to blow up a digital balloon. The more air in the balloon, the more money they could get; they could cash out whenever they wanted. But if the balloon popped or exploded? Bye  bye , potential winnings.

When the researchers studied the performance of the volunteers, they found the people who'd tasted sour were much more likely to keep pumping up the balloon compared with people who'd gotten a taste of the other solutions. On average, sour tasters were 39% more likely to push the balloon to its limits than sweet tasters, 20.50% more than bitter, 16.03% more than salty and 40.29% more than umami.

This finding makes a degree of sense—without taking risks, we don't learn anything new. And it is obvious that people with disorders such as anxiety and depression are unwilling to take risks. So, the researchers argue, if you have these disorders, maybe adding more sour foods into your diet could help keep that aversion in check. Then you'd be more likely to take chances, like talking to a stranger, and that will lead to self-improvement.

1Where does this passage most probably come from?

    A.A travel guide. B.A novel.

    C.A magazine. D.A poster.

2What can we learn about the volunteers?

A.They came from the University of Sussex in England.

B.They got one taste drink after they filled up a balloon.

C.Those who blew up a digital balloon got more money.

D.Sour tasters were likely to push the balloon to its limits.

3This finding may be more helpful to the people who   .

    A.are in a negative mood

    B.like to drink lemonade

    C.joined in the experiment

    D.like talking to strangers

4What is the best title for the passage?

    A.Good Tastes Encourage Adventures.

    B.Sour Tastes Make You Risk-taking.

    C.Lemonade Does Good to Health.

    D.Sour Foods Keep You Happy.
