  • 26、Mary Lyon was a leader in women’s education in the nineteenth century. It was a time when women’s education was not considered important in the United States. States did require each town to provide a school for children, but there were not enough teachers. Most young women were not able to continue their education. If they did, they often were not taught much except the French language, how to sew clothing, and music.

Mary Lyon felt that women’s education was extremely important. She believed women were teachers both in the home and in the classroom. Mary opened a school for young women in the village of Buckland. She suggested new ways of teaching, including holding discussion groups for students.

Its   finances would be the responsibility of the directors. It would not depend on any one person to continue. And, the students would share in cleaning and cooking to keep costs down. • 27、The UK has many strange traditions. One is Pancake Day. This tradition comes from Shrove Tuesday. It is a Christian tradition before the star of Lent. On that day, people across the UK make and eat pancakes in order to use up the food they have in their houses before the start of Pancakes are large and thin and can be topped with either salty or sweet ingredients. People make pancakes in their homes but you might also find that some schools or businesses hold special Pancake Day events, one of which is pancake race.

In a typical pancake race, competitors have to run holding a frying pan with a pancake in it. As competitors run, they have to throw the pancake in the air so that it flips and lands back in the pan on the other side. The winner is the first to reach the finish line, although they should also be careful to make sure that the pancake is complete and that it hasn't broken along the way.

One of the most famous pancake races is the Rehab Parliamentary Pancake Race. The race is a competition between two teams—one team of Members of Parliament (MPs), and one team of journalists—most of whom take part in the race wearing their work suits! The race is shown on the news and covered on TV all around the world. And as well as a bit of fun, the race is also held for a good cause. It draws people's attention to the charity Rehab, which works with people with disabilities and others who suffer from social exclusion.

Another important part of the race is the official starter chosen to announce the start of the race. This is seen as a prestigious role and is usually given to a British news presenter. • 28、This activity will melt away the pounds, build your body and leave you on an emotional high. Yet the form of exercise, the fitness trend of the year, does not require gym membership or a personal trainer. All you need to do is walk.

"Walking is a refreshing alternative to complicated aerobic (氧)routines and overpriced gym membership," says personal trainer Lucy Knight, author of a new book on the exercise. “It is free, enjoyable and already a part of everyday life. All you need to do is correct your technique, walk faster and for longer and you will lose weight?"

There is much evidence of the benefits of walking. Scientists at the University of Pittsburgh recently discovered that overweight people who walked briskly (快)for 30 to 60 minutes a day lost weight even if they didn't change any other lifestyle habits. Another American study found that people who walked for at least four hours a week gained less weight than couch potatoes as they got older. Researchers at the University of Massachusetts medical school found that people who walked every day had 25 percent fewer colds than those who sat a lot. Best of all, walking makes you feel good about yourself "For people suffering from depression, walking three to four times a week for 30 minutes has been shown to lift their mood,” says Knight.

But how to walk your way to weight loss and wellness? Health experts recommend that we should walk 10,000 steps a day to stay healthy. Actually, you would probably need to walk at least 16,000 steps a day to lose weight. "Your workout plans depend on your level of fitness. You should aim to progress by increasing your walking time by five minutes every two weeks, and walk a bit faster. In just three months, the results should speak for themselves," says Knight.

  • 29、Living in a foreign culture can be exciting, but it can also be confusing(令人迷惑的). A group of Americans who taught English in other countries recently discussed their experiences. They found that miscommunication was always possible, even over something as simple as “yes” and “no”.

On her first day in Micronesia, an island in the Pacific, Lisa thought people weren’t paying any attention to her. The day was hot. She went into a store and asked, “Do you have cold drinks?” The woman there didn’t say anything. Lisa repeated the question. Still the woman said nothing. She later learned that the woman had answered her: She had raised her eyebrows(眉毛), which in Micronesia means “yes”.

Jan remembered an experience she had in Bulgaria, a country in Europe. She went to a restaurant that was famous for its cabbage. She asked the waiter, “Do you have cabbage today?” He nodded his head. Jan waited, but the cabbage never came. In that country, a nod means “no”.

Tom had a similar problem when he arrived in India. After explaining something in class, he asked his students if they understood. They answered with many different nods and shakes of the head. He thought some people had not understood, so he explained again. When he asked again, they did the same thing. He soon found out that his students did understand. In India, people nod and shake their heads in different ways depending on where they come from. You have to know where a person is from to understand whether they mean “yes” or “no”.

A.he didn’t know where the students came from

B.he didn’t explain everything clearly enough

C.some students didn’t understand his questions

Mom and I spend mornings cleaning up the dirt that blows into our house. The dirt gets into everything. It covers our clothes. We have to wash the dishes before each meal. We rarely drive our car because Dad fears the dust from the road will ruin the motor.

When my sister, Faye, and I walk to school, we wear scarfs over our mouths so we don’t breathe in the dirt. On days when the air is so bad that they close the school, we stay home and help Mom put wet sheets over the windows. But the dirt always finds a way in.

Last Sunday, there was no dirt in the air, only bright spring sunshine and a clear blue sky. After lunch, Dad headed out to the field to check on the cattle. Faye and I played in the yard. The temperature suddenly dropped.

Then Mom shouted from the house, “Iris, you and Faye get inside, quickly now!” I looked to the west and saw a huge black cloud of dust. All the birds flew away. “Faye, go with Mom!” I shouted. “I’ll warn Dad.”

Faye dashed to the house. The storm hit so fast; I hardly saw her climb the porch steps. Fine sand hit my face and the day turned into night immediately. I stumbled (跌跌撞撞地走) over our bicycles left carelessly in the yard. I screamed for Dad, hoping my voice would lead him back.

The dirt and sand stung (刺) my skin like a thousand bees. I needed to get to shelter. Covering my face with one hand, I found my way to the car and opened the door. Dirt flew in with me as I pulled the door closed. Dad was still out there! I needed to help him find our car.

I found the switch (开关) for the front lights. They gave out some light, but would it be enough for Dad to see them in the thick darkness? I pushed the horn (喇叭) again and again, hoping Dad would hear it. I pushed until I had no more strength in my arms.

    注意:1. 续写词数应为150左右;

    2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
