26、 Why do we dream? It’s a question researchers have been studying for years. Now new research suggests that some dreams may result from the brain’s effort to keep learning, even as we sleep.
In a study in Boston,100 volunteers were trained for an hour on a maze(迷宫). They tried to find their way through the difficult puzzle as quickly as possible. Then half of the volunteers were allowed to sleep for 90 minutes. The other half stayed awake, reading or relaxing. The ones who slept were asked to describe their dreams when they woke up.
After the rest, the volunteers were asked again to solve the maze. Those who hadn’t slept showed no improvement or did even worse after the break. Sleepers who didn’t report any mazerelated dreams did better but showed only a little improvement. However, four naptakers who reported dreaming about the maze showed a surprising improvement. They scored 10 times higher after sleeping and dreaming about the maze.
Even though the number of dreamers was small, the researchers noted that the gap in learning between the dreamers and nondreamers was so wide that the finding was significant(有意义的).
The dreamers had all performed poorly on the test before dreaming about it. That suggests that struggling with a task might be the trigger that leads the sleeping brain to focus on it and work on how to deal with it.
“It’s almost as if your brain is going through everything that happened today,” Dr Stickgold, a scientist at Harvard Medical School, said. ”The things you’re obsessed(迷住) with are the ones that your brain forces you to continue to do with. ”

27、 Until now, much of the effort in search for life on the other planets has been on finding liquid water, because most of the extremely important chemical reactions that happen in plants and animals can only take place in the presence of water. And water is very common. In fact, the elements (元素) that make water (hydrogen and oxygen) are the first and third richest chemicals in the universe. This means that we can find water almost everywhere we look, from the surface of planets in our Solar System to the depths of space.
But for life as we know it to exist, it needs a planet where water exists in a liquid state, or its cells (细胞) would freeze or boil away. Earth is the only known planet that stays in a perfect position from our Sun to support water in a liquid state. Astronomers call this perfect distance from a star the “habitable (宜居的)” or “Goldilocks zone”.
Scientists last year discovered that there is liquid water on the Mars, which made a lot of people very excited since finding a world within a star’s habitable zone where liquid water can exist would be a great start to finding life.
Water is also found on the Mercury, and there are vast water oceans on some of Jupiter’s and Saturn’s moons. But we still haven’t found life on the Mars, or any other planet in our Solar System.
Therefore, finding liquid water isn’t enough. We still need to be able to detect other conditions that support life forms (scientists call them “biosignatures”). For example, we have to look into a planet’s atmosphere and see what gasses are in it. If we find a planet with lots of oxygen, we have one more evidence to support the idea that there may be life there. Unfortunately, at the moment, it is not possible for us to detect the biosignatures on Earth-like planets beyond Mars. We have not perfected the technology to do it yet.
【1】What can we know about the planets in the so-called “Goldilocks zone”?
A.They are very cold. B.They are extremely hot.
C.Life might be found on them. D.Water is not common there.
【2】Where have the scientists found liquid water?
A.On the Saturn. B.On the Mars.
C.On the Jupiter. D.On the Moon
【3】What does the author mean in the last paragraph?
A.There is no life form on the other planets.
B.It is impossible for us to detect the other biosignatures.
C.Liquid water is extremely important for plants and animals.
D.We still have a long way to go to find life beyond the Mars.
【4】What is the text mainly about?
A.The conditions for a livable planet.
B.The importance of liquid water to life.
C.The latest discovery about livable planets.
D.The exploration of life forms on the Mars.

29、 The extreme hot weather often makes people restless with sweats in summer. Even though people are annoyed by it, experts suggest that summer is the best season to give out your body’s poisonous matters and refresh your energy.
One popular choice is hot-stone massage(按摩). Therapists(理疗师)use smooth and heated stones, usually river rocks, to massage certain parts of the body, or set them on key points of the body. The warmth of the hot stones will promote blood circulation and also help muscles relax, while sweating is also believed to be good for letting out the body’s poisonous factors.
Another popular choice is hot-stone baths. The hot-stone bath will help the body give out poisons and humidity(湿气) that build up during the last winter. Summer is the best season to form a good body. Rather than use water or steam to heat and wash the body, people simply wear a coat or something comfortable, and then lie on heated stone tablets made of hot stones, which are warmed to around 45oC. The body will gradually warm up and blood circulation will also be improved. More sweat will come out quickly. The sweat is smooth and fresh, not smelly like that released after sports activities. Such baths bring a number of health benefits, such as anti-aging, improved blood circulation and stress relief. The slimming effect of dieting can even be promoted.
It dates back to ancient times to use hot stones for treatment, but the modern hot-stone massage generally owes to Mary Nelson, a native of Tucson, Arizona, America, whose trademark is “La Stone Therapy”.
The therapy is earning a good fame and popularity with many people, especially those who are often seated in cool rooms with air-conditioners. The hot-stone therapy can help cure many illnesses, back pain included.
