二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 26、   The brain, rather than our eyes, may be more important for sight, researchers studying fruit flies have discovered. The discovery could change the way we think about vision.

Researchers in the University of Virginia have found that the very simple eyes of fruit fly larva (幼虫), with only 24 total photoreceptors (感光细胞) (the human eye contains more than 125 million), provide just enough light input to allow the animal’s large brain to make that input into images. Their discovery shows that vision may be less important to “seeing” than previously thought—and in fact it is the brain’s ability to process points of light into complex images that is key.

“It blows open how we think about vision.” said Barry Condron. “This tells us that visual input may not be as important to sight as the brain working behind it.”

Condron’s graduate students, Elizabeth Daubert, Nick Macedonia and Catherine Hamilton, conducted a series of experiments to test the vision of fruit fly larvae. They found that when a larva was tied to the bottom of a dish, other larvae were attracted to it as it attempted to free itself. After several further experiments to understand how they sensed the motion, the researchers learned that the nearly blind animals likely were seeing the action.

“The answer must be in the brain of these animals.” Condron said. “They are able to take just a couple dozen points of light and then process that into recognizable images; something like when an astronomer with a small telescope is able to use techniques to improve a limited image into useful information about a star.” Condron believes the animals are able to assemble useful images by rapidly scanning their heads and, in doing so, gather up enough light points to allow the brain to compose an image clear enough to “see”.

The researchers tested this by presenting larva with a video (therefore no sound and no smell) and found that the larvae still sensed and sought out the struggling larva on the video. This provides us with a good model for trying to understand the role that the brain plays in helping organisms, including humans, to process images, such as recognizing faces.

1The writer mainly wants to tell us that __________.

A.the brain may be more important for sight than people thought

B.people should depend on brain rather than eyes for sight

C.using the fruit fly larva to test the eyes is the best way

D.some methods can keep our eyesight accurate and normal

2The researchers chose the fruit fly larva because it __________.

A.doesn’t move very quickly B.has a very wise brain

C.only has a few photoreceptors D.doesn’t have large limbs

3Condron used the example of “an astronomer with a small telescope” in Para. 5 to show __________.

A.how the larvae gather up enough light points

B.why the larvae moved their heads side-to-side

C.the brain helps process the light points into images

D.how we can get useful information about a star with a small telescope

4The underlined word “assemble” in the fifth paragraph may mean “__________”.

A.observe enough actions B.receive useful information

C.choose proper equipment D.put together separate parts

  • 27、Getting sick is a common part of people’s lives. But their attitudes toward being sick and hospital visits vary from country to country. This difference hasn’t been more obvious since the start of the novel coronavirus epidemic - when a great number of people are falling ill all at the same time.

The conditions in the US are getting worse quickly, which is largely due to the fact that there’s no universal health-care system. According to the 2019 US Census, 28 million people are not covered or do not have adequate health insurance, meaning that they would probably avoid getting tested for the virus, for fear of the cost of being hospitalized.

‘‘There is a strong financial reason to hide symptoms, to try to keep working and caring for children, and thus, they’re spreading the virus … simply because they have no other choice.” wrote reporter James Hamblin on The Atlantic.

Germany, on the contrary, has one of the world’s best-developed public healthcare systems that covers every citizen. People in Germany - who have ‘‘high levels of job security’’, according to the Los Angeles Times - are also more likely to follow the separation measures and stay at home without having to worry about losing their jobs.

Japan also has universal public health-care, but it brings another kind of problem: People tend to seek more medical care than necessary. According to Yusuke Tsugawa, a physician at Harvard University, Japan has three times more outpatient (门诊) visits than in the US, and patients also stay in hospital for three times longer than in the US. This often wastes medical resources, which are even more critical and precious during a global pandemic.

‘‘It isn’t good to do tests just to ease public anxiety,” Kentaro Iwata, an infectious disease expert at Kobe University, Japan, told Reuters. ‘‘If they test everyone with light symptoms, the medical system will break down.”

Indeed, a country’s healthcare system is the key to keeping its people safe - it’s also the key to whether a country can survive a crisis like the novel coronavirus pandemic.

【1】Why are the conditions in the US worsening rapidly?

A.All people there avoid getting tested.

B.Most people there don’t have health insurance.

C.Most people there can’t afford being hospitalized.

D.All people there are not covered by health-care system.

【2】According to James Hamblin, what makes people in US try to hide their illness?

    A.They choose to do so.

B.They don’t want to work alone.

    C.They are concerned about money.

D.They want to stay with their children.

【3】What is the problem in Japan?

A.They have too many outpatient visits.

B.They waste too much time on unnecessary testing.

C.They spend too much money on public health-care.

D.They don’t make the best use of medical resources.

  • 28、As soon as you meet, or even see, a person, you form an impression of him based on his postures, gestures and facial expressions. This is why it is important to make a good first impression on the person who will be interviewing you. Within the first 60 seconds of meeting you, the interviewer will have formed an impression about what type of person you are and what kind of employee you would become, and 55% of this will be based only on your body language. Here are some tips to make that impression a good one.

First of all, relax. Think positive thoughts and you are more likely to come across as a positive, confident person during the interview. Dress smartly, as your appearance is one of the first things an interviewer will notice you. Stand up straight, and walk in with your shoulders back and your head up. Try to avoid slowing down as you walk into the room because this suggests fear and uncertainty. Shake hands with the interviewer firmly. You should have a positive handshake and a warm smile. Opening your coat or jacket as you sit down shows that you, too, are open.

Posture is important. You should be sitting well back in your seat. Sit up straight and lean forward slightly, but not too much. Sitting at too much of an angle expresses discomfort and distrust. Two of the most common defensive(防卫的)signals are crossing your arms and legs, so try to avoid them.

Another important issue is eye contact. Looking someone in the eye shows confidence in yourself and trust in the other person. However, don’t overdo it, as too much eve contact or staring will make the other person uncomfortable. Use more eye contact when listening than when talking, and when you look away, look down. Looking up at the ceiling will make you seem bored or rude.

【1】The purpose of the first paragraph is to tell readers .

A.what a good first impression is

B.how to make a good first impression

C.how long it takes to make a first impression

D.the importance of making a good first impression

【2】Which of the following does the author advise you to do when you are being interviewed?

    A.Cross your arms or legs.

B.Open your coat or jacket when sitting down.

C.Go into the room more slowly than usual.

D.Avoid looking at the eyes of the interviewer directly.

【3】If you lean forward too much, it means .

    A.you are very thrilled

    B.you are really comfortable

    C.you don’t trust others

    D.you don’t have confidence

【4】Where can we read this passage?

    A.In a newspaper.

    B.In a biography.

    C.In a chemical paper.

    D.In a fiction novel.

  • 29、Every year, over 7.72 trillion kilograms of plastic is washed into the oceans. There are five huge areas in the world’s oceans that are a “soup” of floating rubbish. One of these areas, the Great Pacific Garbage Patch (GPGP), is three times as large as France.

Over a year ago, a group called Ocean Cleanup began using a huge floating screen to try to clean up plastic pollution in the ocean. After several failures, the group is now collecting plastic in the Great Pacific Garbage Patch. But the plastic is spreading out over a large area, so it's impossible to collect it piece by piece. So, the Ocean Cleanup had a plan. They got a long floating U-shaped tube with a screen hanging below it. As the tube and screen are pushed by the water and the winds, the U is meant to collect plastic rubbish, making it easy for a ship to collect and remove the plastic. The system uses the power of the wind and ocean, so it doesn’t need fuel.

The group began testing the first version, called “System 001”, last September. But it soon became clear that the screen was just moving with the plastic, not collecting it. Sometimes plastic would wash over the top of the tube. Even worse, System 001 got broken by surging seas and had to be towed to Hawaii for repairs.

But Mr. Slat, who got the idea for the Ocean Cleanup system, sees the project as an experiment, which means a failure is a chance to learn. The team collected and studied lots of information about what worked well and what didn’t. Then they changed the design. In June, an improved version, called “System001/B” was towed back to the GPGP.

The new version has a parachute (降落伞) attached to it. This makes the system move slightly slower than the plastic, allowing the plastic to be collected inside, as planned. But this success is still just the beginning of the work of the Ocean Cleanup. They want a better and larger system.

【1】What does the author want to show in Paragraph 1?

A.Humans should try to prevent plastic waste.

B.The GPGP is facing different kinds of pollution.

C.Plastic pollution in the oceans has become a serious problem.

D.A series of problems has been caused by plastic pollution.

    【2】What was the group’s plan?

A.To make use of the water and the winds.

B.To create a ship to collect waste in the oceans.

C.To collect the floating plastic waste piece by piece.

D.To gather up the floating plastic waste in the oceans.

【3】What can we know about the “System001”?

    A.It was a failure.

    B.It was a great success.

    C.It worked with a parachute.

D.It needed to be fueled regularly.

【4】What does the underlined word mean in Paragraph 3?

    A.vast

    B.rough

    C.calm

    D.peaceful
