二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 26、   For its critics, the arrival of the London Underground marked the moment the capital got into a messy state. The idea of an underground train had first been formed in the 1840s and one of the leading advocates was Londoner Charles Pearson, but work did not begin on what became the Metropolitan Railway until 1860.

What critics called “the Drain” was not universally popular. Some warned that the tunnels (隧道) would fall apart under the weight of the houses above; others thought an underground railway so terrible that criminals should be forced to take round trips. And the construction work angered the locals. “London would lose its charm forever with this ugly project,” one said.

But by January 1863, the first trains were ready to roll. On Friday 9 January, a special train packed with politicians made the first journey—though the Prime Minister, Lord Palmerston, refused to join then, explaining that at 78, he wanted to spend as much time above ground as possible. All went well, and the next day, Saturday 10 January, it opened to the public.

To general astonishment, the capital’s new Underground proved a great success. On that first day alone, 38,000 people walked deep down into the earth to ride between Farringdon Street and Bishop’s Road, Paddington. The carriages were divided into three classes and lit by gas; as one pleasantly surprised passenger put it, they were “so large that a man who is six feet tall may stand up straight with his hat on”.

“For the first time in the history of the world,” said The Daily News, “men can travel in pleasant carriages, and with great comfort, lower down than gas pipes and water pipes.”

    1What did Charles Pearson do?

    A.He designed the Metropolitan Railway.

B.He showed his dissatisfaction with London.

C.He built a part of the London Underground.

D.He supported building the London Underground.

2Why were people against the London Underground in the beginning?

A.Criminals did most of the construction work.

B.It provided single trips instead of return trips.

C.It was too new to be readily accepted by the public.

D.Lots of accidents happened in tunnels universally.

3How was the politicians’ underground ride in 1863?

A.It was smooth. B.It was lots of fun.

C.It was quite frightening. D.It was totally disorganized.

4What was the right description of the first underground train?

A.Its height was exactly six feet.

B.Its lights were powered by electricity.

C.Its floors had lots of gas pipes and water pipes.

D.Its carriages were more comfortable than expected.

  • 27、Year 2020 seems to be the year of healthy eating. People are choosing to follow a vegetarian diet, and some have even given up animal products entirely.

But Joe Rogan, the most popular podcast host in the US, was against this trend and called January 2020 “world carnivore (食肉动物) month”. In his recent podcast, he reviewed his experience with “the carnivore diet”. Starting in January, he ate only meat for 30 days without any vegetables or fruit.

The podcaster tried the diet after the famous psychologist Jordan Peterson claimed that the diet could promote energy levels and mental health, according to Business Insider.

Rising to the challenge, Rogan posted regular updates about his diet on the popular social platform Instagram. With the average day consisting of just 2 meals, breakfast would be 6 eggs or a steak, and dinner would include either another steak, such as beef, fish or liver.

After 30 days, Rogan said he felt amazed. He also wrote, “I lost 12 pounds. Lots of pains went away. My energy is constant, and I have improvements in my stomachache. I went into this thing, thinking that this carnivore diet was kind of strange, but this is as good as I’ve felt in a long time.”

It has positive results, but some have pointed out the diet’s limitation. Speaking to CNBC, Linda Horn, a health expert at Northwestern University, said that studies show that a high-quality diet with a variety of nutrients is connected with “a better quality of life, long life and reduced risk of chronic (慢性的) diseases”. She added that the energy people claim to feel from the carnivore diet is probably not because of the meat. Instead, she said kicking carbohydrates (碳水化合物) and sugar causes weight loss and it makes people feel better.

While the carnivore diet may offer you some benefits, eating a balanced diet will afford you more health benefits than consuming a single food group, according to Healthline.

【1】How did Rogan respond to the vegetarian trend?

A.He helped promote it on his podcast.

B.He gave up animal products entirely.

C.He started to eat only meat for 30 days.

D.He suggested a “world carnivore month”.

【2】What is Paragraph 5 mainly about?

A.How Rogan benefited from the carnivore diet.

B.Why Rogan tried the carnivore diet at the beginning.

C.How the carnivore diet helped people improve their health.

D.Why Rogan kept posting updates about his diet on Instagram.

【3】Why do people feel better from the carnivore diet according to Linda Horn?

A.They get more and more energy from it.

B.The diet helps them reduce their aches and pains.

C.The meat in the diet improves their mental health.

D.They lose weight without taking carbohydrates and sugar.

【4】What can be concluded from the passage?

A.Keeping a balanced diet is still a wise choice.

B.The carnivore diet has become a trend in 2020.

C.Further studies will be completed on the carnivore diet.

D.The carnivore diet is more beneficial than a vegetarian diet.

  • 28、   How do you make a restaurant business an overnight success at the age of 52? Ray Kroc said, “I was an overnight success, but 30 years is a long, long night.

In 1917, 15-year-old Ray Kroc lied about his age to join the Red Cross as an ambulance driver in World War Ⅰ, but the war ended before he completed his training. He then worked as a piano player, and a paper cup salesman. In 1954, he visited restaurant in San Bernardino, California. There he found the small but successful restaurant run by brothers Dick and Mac McDonald, and was surprised by their effective (有效的) operation. The McDonald’s brothers produced a limited menu, concentrating on just few items—burgers, fries and drinks—which allowed them to focus on quality and quick service.

They were looking for new franchising agent (特许经销商) and Kroc saw chance. In 1955, he founded McDonald’s System, Inc. By 1958, MeDonald’s had sold its 100 millionth hamburger.

In 1961, Kroc started a training program later called Hamburger University, at a new McDonald’s restaurant in Elk Grove Village, Illinois. There, franchisees (特许证持有人) were trained on the proper methods for running successful McDonald’s’ restaurant. Hamburger University used a research and development laboratory to develop new cooking, freezing, storing and serving methods. Today, more than 275,000 franchisees, managers, and employees have graduated from the program.

Right up until he died on January 14, 1984, Ray Kroc never stopped working for McDonald’s. His legacy provides McDonald’s customers with great tasty, inexpensive food; staff and franchisees with chances for growth; and suppliers with a shared promise to provide the highest quality food.

  • 29、   When life gives you lemons, make lemonade, yes, and drink all of them. Then you're ready for an adventure.

Researchers from the University of Sussex in England say they have found for the first time experimental evidence that sour tastes lead to more risk-taking behaviour in a paper published on 7 June, 2019.

In the study, 168 volunteers from the UK and Vietnam were given a 20ml solution representing one of the five main taste groups: bitter, salty, sour, sweet and umami. The tasters then took part in a computerized test that measures risk-taking: they got paid to blow up a digital balloon. The more air in the balloon, the more money they could get; they could cash out whenever they wanted. But if the balloon popped or exploded? Bye  bye , potential winnings.

When the researchers studied the performance of the volunteers, they found the people who'd tasted sour were much more likely to keep pumping up the balloon compared with people who'd gotten a taste of the other solutions. On average, sour tasters were 39% more likely to push the balloon to its limits than sweet tasters, 20.50% more than bitter, 16.03% more than salty and 40.29% more than umami.

This finding makes a degree of sense—without taking risks, we don't learn anything new. And it is obvious that people with disorders such as anxiety and depression are unwilling to take risks. So, the researchers argue, if you have these disorders, maybe adding more sour foods into your diet could help keep that aversion in check. Then you'd be more likely to take chances, like talking to a stranger, and that will lead to self-improvement.

1Where does this passage most probably come from?

    A.A travel guide. B.A novel.

    C.A magazine. D.A poster.

2What can we learn about the volunteers?

A.They came from the University of Sussex in England.

B.They got one taste drink after they filled up a balloon.

C.Those who blew up a digital balloon got more money.

D.Sour tasters were likely to push the balloon to its limits.

3This finding may be more helpful to the people who   .

    A.are in a negative mood

    B.like to drink lemonade

    C.joined in the experiment

    D.like talking to strangers

4What is the best title for the passage?

    A.Good Tastes Encourage Adventures.

    B.Sour Tastes Make You Risk-taking.

    C.Lemonade Does Good to Health.

    D.Sour Foods Keep You Happy.
