  • 26、Being a normal, healthy nineteen-year-old, Rhona was in the habit of falling asleep the moment her head touched her pillow and not wakening up again until her mother called her at seven-thirty.

When she awoke that morning in the grey light of early dawn, she had no idea what had disturbed her. Then she imagined, or thought she imagined, a faint smell of smoke around her nostrils (鼻孔). What was strange, though, was the very fact that she was wide awake and, according to her bedside clock, it was only a quarter to four.

She sat up, listening, alert. There was definitely a smell of burning. Rising quickly, she crossed to the window and opened it quietly, thinking it would be the remains of some garden bonfire. But it wasn’t. She saw smoke and flames billowing out of a downstairs window next door.

Barefoot and in pyjamas, she ran first to her parents’ room, opening their door to call, “Mum! Dad! There’s a fire next door!”

Downstairs in a flash, she hurriedly dialed 999 and gave her name and address in clear, brief tones. By the time she had finished, Graeme, her elder brother, was coming running downstairs.

“You go to their front door—I’ll go to the back,” she said to him.

As she banged on their neighbors’ back door, she could hear a child crying in fear. Without stopping to think, Rhona lifted the large doorstop and smashed it through a glass panel, put her hand in and turned the key which opened the door.

Through the smoke she saw a drying screen hung with white washing and she grabbed at as many of the damp (湿的) clothes as she could on her way past towards the stairs. Halfway up she met Mr Parker carrying the baby and she hurriedly gave him some wet towels before doing the same for Mrs Parker who was behind him leading two-year-old Clare by the hand.

“Crouch down as low as you can,” Rhona directed them as she took the child’s other hand. Within a matter of seconds the family was safely outside.

【1】Rhona woke up early in the morning because________.

A.her mother called her for an emergency

B.she heard a baby crying in fear downstairs

A.Rhona, together with her brother, Graeme, went to the Parkers’ rescue.

B.The Parkers escaped from the burning house together.

C.Rhona broke into the house by back door after smashing the glass panel.

D.Rhona covered her mouth with the damp clothes before entering the Parkers’.

【3】According to the article, Rhona can be best described as ________.

    A.alert and timid

    B.courageous and stressed

    C.panic(恐慌) and sympathetic (有同情心的)

  • 27、Irina Kolesnikova has a wealth of credits on her dance card, but the prima ballerina (芭蕾舞女演员) has made her career from one particular role of a lifetime.

That would be the famous yin and yang characters of Odette and Odile in Tchaikovsky’s Swan Lake, which has become her personal trademark since the age of 21. Her performance as the Swan Queen is regarded as a standout for a ballet that has been redone countless times on the stage and silver screen for nearly 150 years. After her debut at the London Coliseum, The Telegraph described Kolesnikova’s performance of Odette as “truly a thing of remarkable beauty.” Kolesnikova just made her U.S. debut and took the time to speak with Fortune.

Fortune: What inspired you to go into ballet?

Kolesnikova: When I was 5, I saw a ballet, The Sleeping Beauty, on TV, and I was so impressed by what I’d seen. That’s when I decided to be a ballet dancer.

Fortune: Playing the twin roles of Odette and Odile has become a bit of a trademark for you. What attracted you in Swan Lake? Are you looking forward to trying new projects?

Kolesnikova: First of all, in my repertoire (全部节目) of classical ballet, there is not only Swan Lake, but also The Nutcracker, Romeo and Juliet, and also my favorite: La Bayadere. In regards to Swan Lake, I really love this ballet as I have a chance to show two opposite characters during one show. In terms of new projects, I would like to dance Anna Karenina, Manon, and Tatiana from Evgeny Onegin.

Fortune: What is your long-term plan for your career? How do you prepare for life after dancing professionally?

  • 28、   Entering the already crowded festival site, I was a little uneasy. I'd heard discouraging tales of muddy fields, shocking toilet facilities and not being able to find your tent among so many others exactly the same as yours. I had, of course, tried to prepare for every possibility.

The five-day Glastonbury Festival of Contemporary Performing Arts is the largest open-air music festival in the world. But it's not just music at the festival. As I wandered about the site, I realized that this was, indeed, a festival of performing arts. There were theatre tents, dance performances, and mime artists all over the site. You certainly wouldn't starve in this place, either. I'd never seen so many food stands (摊位) in my life.

The famous Pyramid Stage had its usual lineup of great bands and there were plenty of big names playing on the Other Stage, too. In fact, there were so many stages, with so many different types of music and things going on, that it was really difficult to see and do everything you wanted to. I found myself running from one stage to the next, trying to catch at least part of my favourite acts, and still missed a few altogether.

Then it was all over, and I had to pack up my possessions and head back to the real world again. It had been a pleasant surprise to discover that 100,000 people filled into muddy fields could still manage to have the time of their lives. Tickets aren't cheap, but since over £1 million in profits from the festival goes to charity, it would be childish to complain. I left holding the souvenirs bought from various stalls, and with a warm, happy feeling that I'm sure is shared by anyone who has experienced the magic of the Glastonbury Festival.

1How did the author feel when she arrived at the festival?

    A. She was sorry for being late.

    B. She was shocked by the toilets.

    C. She was afraid the festival would not be enjoyable.

    D. She was regretful that her favourite artist was not there.

2What impression did the author get walking around the festival site?

    A. It was a theatrical festival.

    B. There was little food to eat.

    C. It was easy to get lost on the site.

    D. There were lots of performances to see.

3Which of the following surprised the author?

    A. The money from the festival would be donated to charity.

    B. Tickets for the festival were very expensive.

    C. The festival was pleasant despite the lack of comfort.

    D. Over 100,000 people enjoyed the muddy fields.

4What is the author's purpose in writing the text?

    A. To share an impressive experience.

    B. To advertise a traditional festival.

    C. To tell a discouraging story.

    D. To report a rare event.

  • 29、How to Quiet the Complainer

You may want to know why people complain. In fact, even the kindest, most considerate people complain. And complaining doesn’t always have a negative impact. 【1】. However, the problems start when complaining becomes a frequent action. So, how to quiet a complaining considering your health and his?

    Change the subject.

Some complainers will switch the topic if you change the conversation in a direction that interests them. If your neighbor is complaining about the phone company, tell her about an unexpected call you received from an old friend. 【2】.

    Summarize the complaint.

If your complainer keeps repeating himself, ask something like, “Can I tell you that I’ve heard and gotten it?” Using “I” statements (“I’ve heard ...”) rather than “you” statements (“You keep repeating yourself”) shows that you’re interested rather than trying to shut the person down.

    【3】.

When a frequent complainer tells you about her latest problem, ask nicely what she’s done to improve it. This isn’t the usual direction a grievance-laden conversation takes, and it may help to abruptly end a rant.

    Be honest.

【4】, tell the complainer that you must cut the conversation short. You can simply be honest, saying you need to move on so the conversation doesn’t bring you down—especially if it’s someone who’s complained to you many times before.

    Have a heart-to-heart.

If someone very close to you, like your partner or best friend stresses you out with loads of pessimism. 【5】. Otherwise, if you hide your feelings and continue listening to repeated complaints, you may start avoiding the person.

    A.Focus on the effect.

    B.Challenge the person to act.

C.When you have things to do

    D.Avoid saying the word complaining.

E.It’s important to talk about the problem.

F.Sometimes a complaint changes an unfavorable situation into a more desirable one.

G.If your coworker is saying bad words about your boss, ask whether he met the new employee.
