二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 26、Every year, more books on happiness are published. And every year, more people feel depressed because they do not see themselves as happy. They don’t remember or know what it feels like, and instead, they feel guilty that they aren’t as happy as everyone says they should be. This is really a sad state of emotional affairs.

The books, blogs, YouTube videos and advice columns (专栏) will tell you that if you read, exercise, stay busy, help others, and increase your intimacy (亲密) every day, then you too can be happy.

The simple truth is that no one can be happy all the time. That doesn’t mean you have to be sad, angry, or depressed the rest of the time but that you can find a middle ground called contentment. This middle ground is a good place mentally and emotionally, and spending time there is a healthy choice.

Contentment is somewhere between satisfied and peaceful. When you are in that place, the stuff of life can be going on around you, but you don’t need to allow it to bother you. And that, my friends, is a very nice way to go through life.

I find contentment in walks and in writing, and in talking with my partner and reminding each other that our life is good, despite temporary setbacks or scary moments. Because I know about myself and I can respond differently. Doing this takes away stress and will keep you from losing your state of contentment.

If there is even one thing that puts you in a state of contentment — you do it regularly and early enough each day — it will help you go through any challenges you may have to face later.

Right at this moment, things around me are still a little out of my control — such is life — but I am feeling pretty good because I actively living my purpose. I am now content, and that feeling will last the whole day through. You can do the same.

【1】What does the author want to stress by mentioning “Books on happiness in paragraph 1?

A.People find it difficult to agree on what happiness is.

B.Such books are so popular that they are sold out very soon.

C.Happiness is something easy to gain in our daily life.

D.Experts find it useless to argue about the value of happiness.

【2】When facing setbacks or sad moments, what does the author do?

A.He turns to such media as blogs.

    B.He definitely communicates with partners.

C.He adjusts himself and reacts positively.

D.He sees himself unlucky and feels depressed.

【3】What is the author most likely to agree with?

    A.Still water runs deep.

    B.Health is better than wealth.

C.Enough is as good as a feast.

    D.One good turn deserves another.

【4】What is the author’s purpose in writing the text?

    A.To introduce a novel experience.

B.To advocate a proper life attitude.

    C.To encourage studies on happiness.

D.To persuade us to work endlessly.

  • 27、   During Amsterdam’s chaotic rush hour, nine-year-old Lotta Crok cycles to a very busy crossing. “Look,” she says. “There’s traffic coming from everywhere. Four buses from four different directions. For a child on a bike that’s really confusing!”

Lotta is the first junior cycle mayor in the world and her working area is the Dutch capital. You would think this challenge would be superfluous in a city known as the bicycle capital of the world. The number of bicycles in Amsterdam is estimated at 810,000 more than the city’s 750,000 inhabitants and 63% of the population cycle daily.

But children who cycle in Amsterdam face challenges. Lotta says: “The three biggest problems for us are cars, cycling tourists and scooters(小型摩托). The cars take up too much space, the tourists are always swinging side to side and stop when you least expect it, and the scooters simply run you over.”

Lotta became junior cycle mayor in June last year when she won a contest in which school children were asked to come up with plans to make cycling safer and more fun. Her idea was to add children’s bikes to the popular bike share programme.

Since Lotta was appointed junior cycle mayor, she has been busy giving interviews, opening cycling contests in the city and being a jury member during the Amsterdam Light Parade, an event in which Amsterdammers decorate their bikes with lights.

She is now planning a meeting with the city’s mayor to discuss ideas that children have come up with: “One of our proposals is a bicycle park where children can learn how to cycle. Right now, most of us learn it in the street, which can be quite busy. Another idea is to create an app for tourists to teach them the rules of cycling, because most of them really don’t know.”

Following the success of the Amsterdam plan, cycle mayors around the world are now planning to appoint junior colleagues. “They see it works really well,” Boerma, the senior major, says. “I talk to the parents. Lotta talks to the children. And if you look at the city through the eyes of a child, you will also make it accessible for others. A city that’s good for an eight-year-old is also good for an 88-year-old.”

1Why is a junior cycle mayor appointed in Amsterdam?

A.To teach children how to ride.

B.To ensure cycling is safer for children.

C.To give suggestions to the city’s mayor on how to run the city.

D.To organize the cycling contests in the city.

2Which word can best replace the underlined word “superfluous” in paragraph 2?

    A.Important B.Unnecessary C.Difficult D.Valuable

3What’s Boerma’s attitude to the junior cycle mayor?

    A.Favorable B.Cautious C.Ambiguous D.Disapproving

  • 28、   Dazzling (眼花缭乱) with their bright colors and eye — catching displays, fireworks light up our night skies during the holidays. However, these crowd -pleasers can have some damaging side effects. Once a firework is set off, it only takes a couple of seconds before smoke, dust and harmful chemicals are let out into the atmosphere. The loud booming noises are caused by gunpowder. While the sounds may excite some people, they can be frightening to domestic and wild animals — as well as some humans.

The pretty colors you see are a result of more chemicals. Barium, added to make green, is known for its poisonous and radioactive qualities. Blue comes from copper compounds. Cadmium, lithium and lead — all found in fireworks — have been linked to diseases, such as allergies and skin rashes in both humans and animals. Acid rain has been linked to gases given off by fireworks, which sometimes go beyond the toxin (毒素) limits of the United States Clean Air Act.

Once all those chemicals come back down to the ground, they can cause problems too. Debris (碎片) from the fireworks falls to the ground, where animals can bum their paws or noses on piping hot pieces. Humans also are at risk of stepping on or picking up something sharp or hot. Meanwhile, debris that finds its way into waterways can damage animal habitats and water supply sources. Instead of setting off fireworks, try to come up with some new ways for fun. Here are some ideas to get you started:

Sky lanterns — a tradition that originated long ago in the most-populated Asian country.

Party crackers — a favorite in the United Kingdom — give you noise and surprises without the mess of fireworks. You can make your own or buy eco-friendly crackers.

Want noise excitement with less volume? Consider a fireworks sound recording beforehand or break out the party horns (号角) and blow up a storm!

1The advantages of fireworks can be seen below EXCEPT that _________.

A.the special sounds of fireworks excite people

B.the pretty and bright colors add to the beauty of night skies

C.fireworks are enjoyed as one of the crowd-pleasers

D.debris from fireworks can even find its way into water

2Which of the following is NOT true according to the passage?

A.Chemicals in fireworks are both poisonous and dangerous.

B.Too much gases from fireworks can result in acid rain.

C.Copper compounds are needed to make green in fireworks.

D.Chemicals in fireworks are harmful in the air and on the ground.

3What is implied from the passage?

A.Gunpowder in fireworks makes loud booming noises.

B.It must be Indians who first started to hang sky lanterns.

C.Fireworks can even break the balance of nature.

D.Fireworks does less harm in the air than on the ground.

4What can be concluded as the writer’s attitude towards fireworks?

A.It is not allowed to set off fireworks except during the holidays.

B.Night is the best time to set off fireworks and see the pretty colors.

C.You cannot set off fireworks unless you come up with new ways.

D.Fireworks should be banned and replaced by some other means.

  • 29、When a child is told he is "uncool", it can be very painful. He may say he doesn't care, and even act in ways that are opposite of cool on purpose. But ultimately, these are simply ways to handle sadness by pretending it's not there.

Helping a child feel better in school had to be careful. If you say, "Why are you worried about what other children think about you? It doesn't matter!" children know that it does matter. Instead, an active way may be best. You could say, "I'm going to do a couple of things for you to help you feel better in school."

If a boy is having trouble making friends, the teacher can help him. The teacher can arrange things so that he has chances to use his abilities to contribute to class projects. This is how the other children learn how to value his good qualities and to like him. A teacher can also raise a child's popularity in the group by showing that he values that child. It even helps to put him in a seat next to a very popular child, or let him be a partner with that child in activities, etc.

There are things that parents can do at home, too. Be friendly when your child brings others home to play. Encourage him to invite friends to meals and then serve the dishes they consider "super". When you plan trips, picnics, movies, and other shows, invite another child with whom your child wants to be friends.

What you can do is to give him a chance to join a group that may be shutting him out. Then, if he has good qualities, he can start to build real friendship of his own.

1A child who has been informed of being "uncool" may _____.

    A. care nothing about it

    B. develop a sense of anger

    C. do something uncool purposely

    D. pretend to get hurt very much

2A teacher can help an unpopular child by _____.

    A. seeing the child as the teacher's favourite

    B. asking the child to do something for partners

    C. forcing other children to make friends with the child

    D. offering the child chances to show his good qualities

3How can parents help their child fit in better?

    A. By cooking delicious food for him.

    B. By being kind to his schoolmates.

    C. By forcing him to invite friends home.

    D. By taking him to have picnics in the park.

4Which of the following is TRUE?

    A. Children don't care about others' comments on them.

    B. It's only a teacher's work to make children popular.

    C. Parents should take their children out for picnic and shows more often.

    D. Inviting children's friends to family activities is good for them to make friends.
