Learning a language is a big commitment and is not easy by any means. If you don’t have the time to learn a language in school, there are still many, way to become proficient in another language. One program to look into is Livemocha which is a free online program where you can learn a foreign language.5There are many other countries and written resources to consider as well.

  • 27、   The 92-year-old, thin, calm and proud lady, who is fully dressed each morning by eight o’clock, even though she is nearly blind, moved to a nursing home today.

Her husband of 70 years recently passed away, making the move necessary. After many hours of waiting patiently in the hall of the nursing home, she smiled sweetly when told her room was ready.

As she walked slowly to the elevator, I provided a true description of her tiny room, including the old sheets that had been hung on her window. “I love it,” she said with the happiness of an eight-year-old having just been presented with a new puppy.

“Mrs. Jones, you haven’t seen the room…just wait.”

“That doesn’t matter,” she replied. “Happiness is something you decide ahead of time. Whether I like my room or not doesn’t depend on how the furniture is arranged. It’s how I arranged my mind. I have already decided to love it. It’s a decision I make every morning when I wake up. Each day is a gift, and as long as my eyes open I’ll focus on the new day and all the happy memories I’ve stored away.” She went on to explain, “Old age is like a bank account. You take what you’ve put in. So, my advice to you would be to put in a lot of happiness in the bank account of memories. Thank you for your part in filling my memory bank.” And with a smile, she said, “All my memories are happy ones.”

Mrs. Jones was always happy in the nursing home and she died at the age of 108.

1We can infer from the passage that the author ________.

A.couldn’t see what her room was like

B.thought the nursing home was her home

  • 28、The lack of sea ice around parts of Antarctica because of global warming may be good news for one species of penguin, a new study suggests. Surprisingly, Adelie penguins appear to prefer reduced sea-ice conditions, meaning that the species could be “a rare global warming winner”, according to a statement.

“It turns out that these penguins are happier with less sea ice,” said Yuuki Watanabe, lead researcher from Japan’s National Institute of Polar Research. “This may seem strange, but the underlying mechanism(原理)is actually quite simple.” He explained that in ice-free conditions, penguins are able to travel more by swimming than by walking. For penguins, swimming is four times faster than walking.

Researchers from Japan’s National Institute of Polar Research tied GPS trackers and video cameras to 175 penguins to track their behavior over several years. In seasons with heavy sea ice, penguins got tired as they walked to find food. But when there was less sea ice, penguins were able to dive anywhere they wanted, often just entering the water right by their nests, Watanabe said. This is more energy- and time-efficient and it expands their foraging(觅食)range, the study suggests. In fact, the researchers found that the penguins may save an average of 15% to 33% energy per trip compared with ice-covered seasons, putting that saved energy into growth and reproduction. Since climate models predict that the Antarctic will rapidly lose sea ice as the 21st century progress, the results suggest that Adelie penguins may experience a population boom in years to come.

【1】What may be the good news to Adelie penguins?

    A.The reduced sea-ice conditions.

    B.The reduction of ocean pollution.

C.The end of the global warming.

D.The rise in the penguin species.

【2】What makes penguins happier with rising temperature?

    A.They can walk much faster.

    B.They can move more freely.

C.They can find more big fish.

D.They can drink sea water easily.

【3】What will happen to the Adelie penguins if they swim more?

    A.They will store more food.

    B.They will become healthier.

C.They will have a larger population.

    D.They will have difficulty drinking.

【4】What could be the best title for the text?

    A.Penguins Are Good at Swimming

B.Some Penguins Benefit from Global Warming

C.Global Warming Causes the Loss of Sea Ice

D.Researchers Discover a New Species of Penguin

  • 29、   Robert F. Kennedy once said that a country’s GDP measures “everything except what makes life worthwhile.” With Britain voting to leave the European Union, and GDP already predicted to slow as a result, it is now a timely moment to assess what he was referring to.

The question of GDP and its usefulness has annoyed policymakers for over half a century. Many argue that it is a mistaken concept. It measures things that do not matter and misses things that do. By most recent measures, the UK’s GDP has been the envy of the Western world, with record low unemployment and high growth figures. If everything was going so well, then why did over 17 million people vote for Brexit, despite the warnings about what it could do to their country’s economic prospects?

A recent annual study of countries and their ability to convert growth into well-being throws some light on that question. Across the 163 countries measured, the UK is one of the poorest performers in ensuring that economic growth is translated into meaningful improvements for its citizens. Rather than just focusing on GDP, over 40 different sets of criteria from health, education and civil society engagement have been measured to get a more all-round assessment of how countries are performing.

While all of these countries face their own challenges, there are a number of common themes. Yes, there has been an economic recovery since the 2008 global crash, but in key indicators in areas such as health and education, major economies have continued to decline. Yet this isn’t the case with all countries. Some relatively poor European countries have seen huge improvements across measures including civil society, income equality and environment.

This is a lesson that rich countries can learn: When GDP is no longer regarded as the only measure of a country’s success, the world looks very different.

So what Kennedy was referring to was that while GDP has been the most common method for measuring the economic activity of nations, as a measure, it is no longer enough. It does not include important factors such as environmental quality or education outcomes — all things that contribute to a person’s sense of well-being.

    1Robert F.Kennedy is cited(引用)because he _______.

A.praised the UK for its GDP. B.identified GDP with happiness.

C.misinterpreted the role of GDP. D.had a low opinion of GDP.

2Which of the following is true about the recent annual study?

A.Its results are inspiring. B.It is sponsored by 163 countries.

C.Its criteria are questionable. D.It removes GDP as an indicator.

3What is the author’s attitude towards GDP as the most common measure of a country’s success?

    A.Favorable. B.Indifferent.

    C.Critical. D.Defensive.
