二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 26、A walker seriously injured in a mountaintop lightning strike which killed two others is showing signs of improvement, the police have said. A major rescue operation was performed on Sunday following two strikes which hit the Brecon Beacons, South Wales. Two men died, while two others were taken to hospital.

A police spokeswoman said, “A man in a serious condition in hospital, following simultaneous(同时发生的)incidents in the Brecon Beacons, has now improved and he is recovering. Officers are continuing to get in touch with the next of relatives of the dead men and enquiries are ongoing. All men were believed to be from England.”

Mark Jones,of the Brecon Mountain Rescue Team, described the lightning strike as a freak accident, and something he had not been called out to in 30 years of service.

The walking group Ramblers Cymru said that while incidents involving thunder and lightning were rare, electrical storms should be taken seriously by walkers.

The organisation's delivery officer, Elly Hannigan Popp, said, “We'd advise everyone to check the weather forecast before starting a walk. If you hear thunder, see lightning or if your hair stands on end, postpone activities even if the sky looks blue and clear. Lightning will strike as far as 10 miles away from any rainfall. Lightning can strike the same place repeatedly—especially tall, pointed, isolated objects.”

“If there is no shelter you should keep moving. And if you become the tallest object, crouch(蹲)in the open twice as far away from the nearest pointed object as it is tall. Make yourself as small as possible, stay on your toes and keep your heels together, as it will allow electricity to go up one foot, through the heels and back into the ground through the other.”

【1】What can we learn about the victims of the incident?

A.Both of the injured men are recovering slowly.

B.The bodies of the two men haven't been found.

C.The four men involved may be from the same country.

D.The police cannot contact the two dead men's relatives.

【2】Why did the author quote the police spokeswoman in Paragraph 2?

A.Because the accident is very serious.

B.To announce where the victims come from.

C.Because the police are looking into the accident.

D.To tell the readers some facts of the incident.

【3】What’s the meaning of the underlined word in Paragraph 3?

    A.Unusual.

    B.Regular.

    C.Unimportant.

    D.Frightening.

【4】What do the last two paragraphs tell us?

    A.Harm done by lightning.

    B.Warnings from a delivery officer.

C.First aid in a lightning incident.

D.Safety tips on a lightning strike.

  • 27、Directions: Read the following passage. Fill in each blank with a proper sentence given in the box. Each sentence can be used only once. Note that there are two more sentences than you need.

Surveys in Britain and America consistently show that the biggest worry parents have for their school-age children is that they will be bullied. In Japan more pupils commit suicide on September 1st, just before the start of the new term, than on any other day. 1. Many victims are too ashamed to tell a teacher. One former victim who recently finished high school in Vancouver says he kept the pain to himself for several months, worried that teachers would “judge” him.

Children who are from ethnic minorities, short, obese, disabled, gay or have poor social skills are at higher risk. In America bullies pick on “nerds”. In China and South Korea, by contrast, those with poor grades are at higher risk. A study in 2013 of the Arab world found that the best predictor of being bullied was having crooked teeth. 2. A graduate student at Oxford University says he was “emotionally scarred for at least five years” after being tormented in middle school in Hong Kong.

    3. In Britain all state schools have since 2006 been required to adopt a school-wide anti-bullying policy. By 2015 every state in America had anti-bullying legislation, States with the strictest laws, such as Massachusetts, require school officials to report all bullying to the head, who must “promptly conduct an investigation”.

Central to tackling bullying in schools, argues Christina Salmivalli of the University of Turku in Finland, is to encourage bystanders to intervene. 4. By teaching bystanders to speak up, or at least not to laugh at the victim, the “social rewards” of bullying can be reduced, she says.

Other approaches abound. The International School of Beijing has security guards in every changing room. Many school-bus drivers in North America assign seats, keeping suspected bullies close to the front. Every classroom at Rhiw-Bechan School in mid-Wales has a “worry-box” for pupils to report bullies anonymously.

    A. The main motivation for bullying is the drive for social status.

    B. Victims of bullying may in turn bully others.

    C. But bullied children everywhere risk long-term health effects.

    D. But educators struggle to spot bullying, let alone to stop it.

    E. Cultural differences complicate the picture.

    F. Most rich countries have anti-bullying laws.

  • 28、   Facebook says it is working on technology to allow us to control computers directly with our brains.  It is developing "silent speech "software to allow people to type at a rate of 100 words per minute, it says.  The project, in its early stages, will require new technology to detect brainwaves without needing invasive operation. "We are not talking about monitoring your random thoughts," assured Facebook's Regina Dugan. "You have many thoughts, and you choose to share some of them. We're talking about monitoring those words. A silent speech interface(界面)-one with all the speed and flexibility(灵活)of voice. ”

Ms Dugan is the company's head of Building 8the firm's hardware research lab. The company said it intends to build both the hardware and software to achieve its goaland has employed a team of more than 60 scientists and academics to work on the project.

The problem is that the best way we have to get information out into the world-speech-can only send about the same amount of data as a 1980s modem. We're working on a system that will let you type straight from your brain about five times faster than you can type on your phone today. Finallywe want to turn it into a wearable technology that can be produced in quantity. ”

Technology is going to have to get a lot more advanced before we can share a pure thought or feeling. but this is a first step. Other ideas detailed at the company's developers conference in San Jose included work to allow people to “hear" through skin. The systemcomparable to Brailleuses pressure points on the skin to pass information. "One daynot so far awayit may be possible for me to think in Chinese, and you to feel it instantly in Spanish,"Ms Dugan said.
