二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 26、   Siblings refer to one's brothers and sisters. We're attached to siblings as adults far longer than we are as children. Our sibling relationships, in fact, are the longest-lasting family ties we have.

“Paul, my younger brother, and I, kind of annoyed each other when we were kids,” said Anna, an interviewee, “But as adults, we've always had each other's back, especially when dealing with our mother's health crisis. Paul is the first person I want to talk to when something worries me.”

There's probably a biological explanation for the close bond of the sibling relationship. Siblings share half their genes, which biologists say should be motivation enough for each other's devotion.

One thing that can weaken closeness in adulthood is a parent who played favorites in childhood; this sense of hatred can last a lifetime. The simple concept of parental favoritism was enough to shake their relationship.

“What Paul and I are pretty sure is our parents treated us the same when we were growing up. Yet we're very different people,” Anna said, “Paul is outgoing while I'm shy. Paul is an amateur pianist while I can't read music or carry a tune. In families with more than one child, every sibling seems to get a label in contrast to every other sibling.”

The very presence of siblings in the household can be an education. When a new baby is born, the older sibling gains social skills by interacting with the younger, and the younger gains cognitive (认知) skills by imitating the older. They learn from the friction between them, too, as they fight for their parents' attention, Mild conflict between brothers and sisters teaches them how to interact with friends and co-workers for the rest of their lives.

It's so sad when things between siblings fall apart, which happens when aging parents need care or dieold feelings of contradiction and jealousy erupt all over again. Many families get through their parents' illnesses just fine, establishing networks where the workload is divided pretty much equally. But about 40 percent of the time there is a single primary caregiver who feels like she is not getting any help from her brothers and sisters, which can lead to serious conflicts.

Throughout adulthood, the sibling relationship “is powerful and unchanged”, said Jane Mersky Leder, author of the new e-book The Sibling Connection. Whether we are close to our siblings or distant, she writes, they remain our brothers and sisters for better or for worse.

So remember the immortal (永恒的) words of folksinger Loudon Wainwright , in a song called Thanksgiving. “On this brilliant occasion, this special family dinner, if I argue with a loved one, please make me...”

1What can probably encourage hatred among siblings?

A.The aging of their Mom and Dad. B.The difference between their hobbies.

C.The conflict in their daily lives. D.The unequal treatment from their parents.

2The underlined word “friction” in Para. 6 is closest in meaning to ___________.

    A.mild conflict B.close relationship C.active interaction D.cognitive imitation

3One effective way to avoid conflict when looking after sick parents is to _________.

A.employ an experienced caregiver B.take on reasonable burdens

C.equally divide the fortune D.send them straight to hospital

4The writer ends the passage with a song Thanksgiving to indicate that __________.

A.it's emotionally acceptable to quarrel with siblings

B.we should be grateful to have brothers or sisters in life

C.Thanksgiving Day is a wonderful occasion

D.Thanksgiving Day is a time for brothers to get together

  • 27、   Jane Goodall was born in Bournemouth, England, on April 3, 1934. As a child, she had a natural love for the outdoors and animals. When Jane was about eight she read the Tarzan and Dr. Dolittle series and, in love with Africa, dreamed of traveling to work with the animals.

Finally, at age 23, she left for Nairobi, Kenya. There, Jane met famed Dr. Louis Seymour Bazett Leakey, who offered her a job at the local natural history museum. She worked there for a time before Leakey decided to send her to the Gombe Stream Game Reserve in Tanzania to study wild chimpanzees. He felt her strong interest in animals and nature, and her knowledge as well as high energy made her a great candidate to study the chimpanzees.

In December 1958, Jane returned home to England and Leakey began to make arrangements for the expedition (考察), securing the appropriate permissions from the government and raising funds. In May 1960, Jane learned that Leakey had gained funding from the Wilkie Brothers Foundation.

Jane arrived by boat at the Gombe Stream Game Reserve on the eastern shore of Lake Tanganyika with her mother. The early weeks at Gombe were challenging. Jane developed a fever that delayed the start of her work. Finally, an older chimpanzee named David Greybeard, began to allow Jane to watch him. As a high ranking male of the chimpanzee community, his acceptance meant other group members also allowed Jane to observe. It was David Greybeard whom Jane first witnessed using tools. Excited, she telegraphed Dr. Leakey about her observation. He wrote back, “Now we must redefine ‘tool,’ and ‘man,’ or accept chimpanzees as humans.”

Jane continued to work in the field and, with Leakey’s help, began her doctoral program without an undergraduate degree in 1962. At Cambridge University, she found herself at odds with senior scientists over the methods she used — how she had named the chimpanzees rather than using the more common numbering system, and for suggesting that the chimps have emotions and personalities. She further upset those in power at the university when she wrote her first book, My Friends, the Wild Chimpanzees, aimed at the general public rather than an academic audience. The book was wildly popular, and her academic peers were outraged. Dr. Jane Goodall earned her Ph.D. on February 9, 1966, and continued to work at Gombe for the next twenty years.

1It can be inferred from the passage that ______ .

A.Jane was the first to discover chimpanzees use tools

B.a journey to Kenya rooted Jane’s deep love for animals

C.Dr. Leakey easily raised funds from the Wilkie Brothers Foundation

D.Jane’s work at the Gombe Stream Game Reserve went along smoothly

2What is the academic peers’ attitude towards Jane’s first book?

    A.Extremely puzzled. B.Genuinely pleased.

    C.Really angry. D.Truly sensitive.

3What does the underlined sentence imply in paragraph 5?

A.Jane’s study of chimpanzees received no support from scientists.

B.Jane’s method inspired more scientists to make further discoveries.

C.Jane’s achievements quickly attracted attention from senior scientists.

D.Senior scientists disagreed with Jane’s method in observing chimpanzees.

4What message is mainly conveyed in the passage?

A.Passion and hard work can make a difference in scientific research.

B.Cooperation is the key to making significant discoveries.

C.Challenging senior scientists is a must in gaining fame.

D.High energy counts in achieving great success.

  • 28、   May is a beautiful month full of sunshine and flowers. It is also the month when we show thanks to our mothers on Mother’s Day.

In my family, Mother’s Day celebration is different every year. Two years ago, I made breakfast for my mom and she still remembers all the dishes I cooked. Last year, I bought her a selfie stick (自拍杆) with the money that I made from selling some of my old books. She uses it all the time.

I wanted to do something special on this “quarantined” (隔离) Mother’s Day due to the coronavirus (新冠病毒) outbreak. In April, I started to search for different gift ideas on the internet. Finally, I decided to make multiple cards by hand and make a box out of the cards. It took me a long time to make it. I then put a small bag of colorful chocolates in the box. The messages I wrote on the cards were some small favors I could do for my mom, such as wash-ing dishes.

On the night before Mother’s Day, I asked my mom to go to sleep early so that I could go into her room and put the present next to her bed. When she woke up, she was very excited a-bout my gift and spent a lot of time looking at every tiny detail of the box.

My mom is my hero and she has sacrificed (牺牲) her career to take care of me. I am glad that there is a special day in May for me to honor my mom and show her my thanks and love.

1What did the writer buy for her mom on last Mother’s Day?

    A.dishes. B.selfie stick. C.chocolates. D.flowers.

2Why were they quarantined on Mother’s Day this year?

    A.Because of the coronavirus outbreak.

B.Because of the sunshine and flowers this month.

C.Because of selling some of her old books.

    D.Because of her mother’s sacrifice.

3Why did the writer ask her mom to go to sleep early on the night before Mother’s Day?

A.Because her mother is a hero.

B.Because she wanted to wash dishes.

C.Because she would make a box out of cards.

D.Because it was convenient for her to put her present.

4What is the best title for the text?

A.Mother’s Day. B.A Box out of Cards.

C.May Love for Mom D.My Hero.

  • 29、Pets are like our family members and their good health is something that is very important to all pet owners. Just as the pollutants, such as carbon monoxide (一氧化物) and carbon dioxide in the air, affect our health, these same environmental nasties can affect our pets too.

【1】57% of dogs exposed to higher pollution levels developed brain diseases and showed signs of neuro problems. In a more recent study from the journal of Veterinary Internal Medicine, researchers found that cats with breathing problems were more likely to live in households with higher indoor air pollution.

Air purifiers have been brought into use in recent years. They work to remove harmful chemicals known as volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and other environmental pollutants from the air.【2】But are they safe for pets? How can we ensure that they aren’t harming our furry friends?

【3】The physical safety of using a mechanical device around pets is what we have to pay attention to. Air purifiers come in various shapes and sizes, from small desk-top units to large, free-standing models. In terms of physical harm, there is an existing risk of our pet becoming trapped in the electrical wire of our air purifier. Air purifiers are designed to be used in the home around children and their internal mechanisms should also be safe from small tails of our pets and other parts of their bodies. 【4】

Whether the air purifier improves or damages the health of our animals is also something we have to consider. The air purifiers are safe for pets, but only if they do not produce any ozone (臭氧) byproduct.【5】We should always stay away from the ones that produce even minimal quantities. We are always on the safe side by picking a standard air purifier with the classic 3-stage filtration (过滤) system of a pre-filter, HEPA filter and carbon activated filter.

Picking the wrong air purifier type can quickly make things worse for our pets. On the other hand, picking the correct air purifier can lead to a big increase in the quality of life for them.

A.At present many homes are equipped with these useful devices.

B.Before buying an air purifier, we should keep two aspects in mind.

C.Pet owners always pay close attention to the physical health of their pets.

D.Even the smallest pets shouldn’t be able to access the insides of air purifiers.

E.This greatly depends on the type of air purifier and air cleaning technology used.

F.So always check the product specifications and try to find a model that does not produce any carbon monoxide.

G.A 2008 study published in Brain and Cognition showed that dogs’ brains were negatively affected by the heavy pollution levels.
