二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 26、   About ten men in every hundred suffer from color blindness in some way. Women are luckier; only about one in two hundred is affected in this matter. Perhaps, after all, it is safer to be driven by a woman!

There are different forms of color blindness. In some cases a man may not be able to see deep red. He may think that red, orange and yellow are all shadows of green. Sometimes a person cannot tell the difference between blue and green. In rare cases an unlucky man may see everything in shades of green a strange world indeed.

Color blindness in human beings is a strange thing to explain. In a single eye there are millions of very small things called “cones”. These help us to see in a bright light and to tell difference between colors. There are also millions of “rods”, but these are used for seeing when it is near dark. They show us shape but no color.

Some insects(昆虫) have favorite colors. Mosquitoes(蚊子) prefer blue to yellow. A red light will not attract(吸引) insects, but a blue lamp will. In a similar way human beings also have favorite colors. Yet we are lucky. With the help of the cones in our eyes we can see many beautiful colors by day, and with the help of the rods we can see shapes at night. One day we may even learn more about the invisible(不可见)colors around us.

1The passage is mainly about _____________.

    A.color and its surprising effects.

    B.women being luckier than men

    C.danger caused by color blindness

    D.color blindness

2Why do some people say it is safer to be driven by women?

    A.Women are more careful.

    B.There are fewer color-blind women

C.Women are fonder of driving than men.

D.Women are weaker but quicker in thinking.

3We can attract and kill mosquitoes by using a _____________.

    A.red light B.yellow light

    C.blue light D.green light

  • 27、Remember Vitainwater’s “free of rolling screen for a year” challenge that dared people to be free from smart phones for a whole year will win $ 100,000? Well, Elana Mugdan, a New York woman, has been into it for eight months, and just four months away from claiming grand prize.

Vitaminwater made news headlines last December when it announced its unique challenge. Thousands of people applied to be chosen as the perfect candidate to spend a year without touching their smart phones, but in the end, the only person who got to try and survive for an entire year without a handheld smart phone was Elana Mugdan, a 29-year-old fiction writer from Queens, New York. Eight months into the challenge, she claims it has been a free and eye-opening experience that shows her just how dependent she becomes on her smart phone. Even though there are times when she misses her handheld smart phone, she plans to go on living without it even after the challenge ends, because she really doesn’t want to go back to days when she abused it, wasted time, stayed up all hours of the night on it, and was obsessed with social media.

But not having access to her smart phone really made certain situations a lot harder than she could have imagined them before. “Many people did me a favor. However, once, I almost got stranded (滞留) in the SeaTac airport because the phone number I’d written down was wrong, and I had no way of referring to the right one, no way of calling a cab, and no one in the state who could help me,” the young writer said.

Another time, her car’s “check engine” light turned on while she was driving in an unfamiliar area at night. She couldn’t use her phone’s GPS location feature, r even check what the light meant on Google or find a nearby car repair shop. Still, she learned to overcome these situations. And now she claims the last eight months of phone-free life have been one of the best adventures of her life and that she’ll keep it for another four months.

【1】What’s the challenge “free of rolling screen for a year”?

A.People free from smart phones can live a richer life.

B.People living a telephone-free life can be awarded every year.

C.People living without computers for a year will win grand prize.

D.People spending a year free from smart phones will get a reward.

【2】Which phrase can replace the underlined part “obsessed with” in paragraph 2?

    A.satisfied with

    B.accustomed to

    C.addicted to

    D.popular with

【3】What does Elana Mugdan mainly want to express in paragraph 3?

A.It’s fantastic to have someone to help her all the way.

B.It’s unimaginable to lose her phone number on the way.

C.It’s unnecessary to refer to information with a smart phone.

D.It’s difficult to get out of the trouble without a smart phone.

【4】What can we learn about Elana Mudgan?

    A.She couldn’t live without a smart phone.

B.She finds no one can help her in the adventure.

C.She has not won the grand $ 100,000 prize yet.

D.She used to use her smart phone to write fiction.

  • 28、   Entering the already crowded festival site, I was a little uneasy. I'd heard discouraging tales of muddy fields, shocking toilet facilities and not being able to find your tent among so many others exactly the same as yours. I had, of course, tried to prepare for every possibility.

The five-day Glastonbury Festival of Contemporary Performing Arts is the largest open-air music festival in the world. But it's not just music at the festival. As I wandered about the site, I realized that this was, indeed, a festival of performing arts. There were theatre tents, dance performances, and mime artists all over the site. You certainly wouldn't starve in this place, either. I'd never seen so many food stands (摊位) in my life.

The famous Pyramid Stage had its usual lineup of great bands and there were plenty of big names playing on the Other Stage, too. In fact, there were so many stages, with so many different types of music and things going on, that it was really difficult to see and do everything you wanted to. I found myself running from one stage to the next, trying to catch at least part of my favourite acts, and still missed a few altogether.

Then it was all over, and I had to pack up my possessions and head back to the real world again. It had been a pleasant surprise to discover that 100,000 people filled into muddy fields could still manage to have the time of their lives. Tickets aren't cheap, but since over £1 million in profits from the festival goes to charity, it would be childish to complain. I left holding the souvenirs bought from various stalls, and with a warm, happy feeling that I'm sure is shared by anyone who has experienced the magic of the Glastonbury Festival.

1How did the author feel when she arrived at the festival?

    A. She was sorry for being late.

    B. She was shocked by the toilets.

    C. She was afraid the festival would not be enjoyable.

    D. She was regretful that her favourite artist was not there.

2What impression did the author get walking around the festival site?

    A. It was a theatrical festival.

    B. There was little food to eat.

    C. It was easy to get lost on the site.

    D. There were lots of performances to see.

3Which of the following surprised the author?

    A. The money from the festival would be donated to charity.

    B. Tickets for the festival were very expensive.

    C. The festival was pleasant despite the lack of comfort.

    D. Over 100,000 people enjoyed the muddy fields.

4What is the author's purpose in writing the text?

    A. To share an impressive experience.

    B. To advertise a traditional festival.

    C. To tell a discouraging story.

    D. To report a rare event.

  • 29、   School is still out for the summer, but at Eastern Senior High School, students are hard at work. In a garden bursting with vegetables and herbs, nearly a dozen teenagers are harvesting them for the weekend’s farmers market. They work Tuesday through Saturday with City Blossoms, a non-profit that brings community gardens to schools and other places where kids gather in urban(城市的) areas.

Roshawn Little, going into her junior year at Eastern, believes that working in the garden has taught her to try all sorts of new things — like eating different kinds of vegetables more often. And she has taken those healthy behaviors home with her and her family now buy more fruits and vegetables. We mainly live around liquor stores and snack stores. There aren’t that many grocery stores. They’re way out, and you have to drive so far ——a common problem in low-income urban areas .”

City Blossoms is one of many groups across the country teaming up with local communities to establish school gardens, like the one at Eastern. These gardens, advocates say, are really outdoor classrooms where kids learn valuable lessons — not just about nutrition, but also about science and math, even business skills. For example, the gardens can be used for math lessons — like calculating the area of a plant bed — or learning the science of how plants grow.

On a recent weekend at the Aya farmers market, the kids work at a table decorated with handmade signs that read “onions” and “garlic”, inviting people to try their herbed salt with bread. Working at the market helps them practice public speaking skills and business skills.

Nadine Joyner of a nutrition education company has a food table next to the kids’ at the market and often buys produce from them. She is constantly impressed by the kids’ knowledge of what they’re selling — they know how to grow it, how to prepare it, and how to cook it.

1What do students at Eastern do with the harvested vegetables?

A.Sell them on market. B.Take them to school.

C.Give them to farmers. D.Share them at home.

2What can we infer about the area Little lives in?

    A.It is inconvenient in traffic.

B.It is crowded with grocery stores.

C.It has poor access to fresh foods.

    D.It suffers from income inequality.

3Why does City Blossoms establish school gardens?

    A.To provide nutritious food.

    B.To improve classroom conditions

    C.To cooperate with local community.

    D.To create outdoor learning chances.
