二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 26、I was reading these interesting stories behind a group of great logos(商标) in the world. Personally Nike is my favorite one﹣it's so simple. And I liked the stories behind them, which made me forget all other things. McDonald's, Apple, and Mercedes Benz own great logos as well, and they are among my favorites.

    Nike

In the Greek myth, Nike is the goddess of victory and the source of inspiration for soldiers. This logo represents the wing in the famous statue of the Greek goddess. Nike's logo was designed by Carolyn Davidson in 1971 for﹩35, and was registered as a trademark in 1995.

    McDonald's

The logo was designed in 1962 by Jim Schindler to resemble the arch shaped (拱形的) signs on the side of the company's then walk﹣up hamburger stand. Later on, the two golden arches were combined together to form the M. The McDonald's name was added to the logo in 1968.

    Apple

There are different stories behind Apple's logo. The first logo was a reference to the religious story of Adam and Eve, in which the apple represented the fruit of the Tree of Knowledge. One year later, the second logo was designed in 1977 by Steven Jobs and Ronald Wayne, and it described Sir Isaac Newton sitting under an apple tree. This logo didn't stay long. One year later it was replaced almost immediately by graphic designer Rob Janoff's "rainbow apple", a rainbow﹣colored silhouette (轮廓) of an apple with a bite taken out of it. And then the rainbow﹣colored apple was replaced by the one﹣colored logo in 1998. It has not been changed so far.

    Mercedes Benz

The Mercedes Benz logo, which was originally created by Gottlieb Daimler in 1909, consists of a simple description of a three﹣pointed star that represents its rule of the land, the sea and the air. The company was founded by Gottlieb Daimler and Wilhelm Maybach. Mercedes is the name of Maybach's elder daughter, while Benz came as a result of a combination with Benz Cie and DMG in 1926.

【1】What does the author think of the stories of the great logos?

    A.They are boring.

    B.They are attractive.

    C.They are out of date.

    D.They are practical.

【2】We can learn that Apple's present logo is ___.

A.a bitten apple with only one color

B.Newton's sitting under an apple tree

C.the religious story of Adam and Eve

    D.the rainbow﹣colored bitten apple

【3】Which of the following time orders describes the births of the great logos?

    A.Nike ﹣ McDonald's ﹣ Apple ﹣ Mercedes Benz.

    B.Mercedes Benz ﹣ Apple ﹣ Nike ﹣ McDonald's.

    C.Mercedes Benz ﹣ McDonald's ﹣ Nike ﹣ Apple.

    D.Nike ﹣ Mercedes Benz ﹣ McDonald's ﹣ Apple.

  • 27、   I work with Volunteers for Wildlife, a rescue and education organization at Bailey Arboretum in Locust Valley. Trying to help injured, displaced or sick creatures can be heartbreaking; survival is never certain. However, when it works, it is simply beautiful.

I got a rescue call from a woman in Muttontown. She had found a young owl(猫头鹰) on the ground. When I arrived, I saw a 2-to 3-week-old owl. It had already been placed in a carrier for safety.

I examined the chick(雏鸟) and it seemed fine. If I could locate the nest, I might have been able to put it back, but no luck. My next work was to construct a nest and anchor it in a tree.

The homeowner was very helpful. A wire basket was found. I put some pine branches into the basket to make this nest safe and comfortable. I placed the chick in the nest, and it quickly calmed down.

Now all that was needed were the parents, but they were absent. I gave the homeowner a recording of the hunger screams of owl chicks. These advertise the presence of chicks to adults; they might also encourage our chick to start calling as well. I gave the owner as much information as possible and headed home to see what news the night might bring.

A nervous night to be sure, but sometimes the spirits of nature smile on us all! The homeowner called to say that the parents had responded to the recordings. I drove over and saw the chick in the nest looking healthy and active. And it was accompanied in the nest by the greatest sight of all-LUNCH! The parents had done their duty and would probably continue to do so.

1What is unavoidable in the author's rescue work according to paragraph 1?

    A.Efforts made in vain.

    B.Getting injured in his work.

    C.Feeling uncertain about his future.

D.Creatures forced out of their homes.

2Why was the author called to Muttontown?

    A.To rescue a woman.

B.To take care of a woman.

C.To look at a baby owl.

    D.To cure a young owl.

3What made the chick calm down?

    A.A new nest. B.Some food.

    C.A recording. D.Its parents.

  • 28、When it comes to the most famous 20th century painters of the United States, Grandma Moses should be mentioned, although she did not start painting until she was in her late seventies. As she once said to herself , “I would never sit back in a rocking chair, waiting for someone to help me”. No one could have had a more active old age.

She was born on a farm in New York State, one of five boys and five girls. At 12 she left home and was in domestic service until at 27 she married Thomas Moses, the hired hand of one of her employers. They farmed most of their lives, first in Virginia and then in New York State, at Eagle Bridge. She had ten children, of whom five survived; her husband died in 1927.

Grandma Moses painted a little as a child and made embroidery (刺绣) pictures as a hobby, but only changed to oils in old age because her hands became too stiff (僵硬的) to sew and she still wanted to keep busy and pass the time. Her pictures were first sold at the local drugstore and at a market and were soon noticed by a businessman who bought all that she painted. Three of the pictures were exhibited in the Museum of Modern Art, and in 1940 she had her first exhibition in New York. Between the 1930’s and her death, she produced some 2,000 pictures: careful and lively portrayals of the country life she had known for so long, with a wonderful sense of color and form. “I think really hard till I think of something really pretty, and then I paint it” she said.

【1】What can we learn about Moses?

A.She stopped painting in her late seventies.

B.She still led an active life when she was old.

C.Her marriage life was not happy.

D.She painted oils as a child.

【2】What did Grandma Moses spend most of her life doing?

    A.Embroidering.

    B.Farming.

    C.Nursing.

    D.Painting.

【3】What does the underlined word “portrayals ” in the last paragraph mean?

    A.Directions.

    B.Stages.

    C.Surveys.

    D.Descriptions.

【4】Which of the following would be the best title for the passage?

A.Grandma Moses: the Best Woman Painter

B.Grandma Moses and Her Farm Life

    C.Grandma Moses and Her Exhibition

D.Grandma Moses : A Famous Woman Painter of 20th Century

  • 29、   There are many places to go on safari in Africa, but riding a horse through the flooded waters of Botswana’s Okavango Delta must be one of the world’ most exciting wildlife journeys.

Several safari camps operate as the base for this adventure(冒险经历), providing rides twice a day to go deep into the delta. The camps have excellent horses, guides and lots of support workers. They are famous for providing a great riding experience.

The morning ride, when the guides take you to beautiful, shallow lakes, is more active. It is unlike any other riding experience. With rainbows forming in the splashing water around you and the sound of huge drops of water bouncing off your body and face, it is truly exciting. You are very likely to come across large wild animals, too. On horseback it is possible to get quite close to elephants, giraffes and many other animals. The sense of excitement and nervousness rise suddenly though, as does your heartbeat, as you move closer to them.

In the evening, rides are usually at a less exciting and unhurried pace, with golden light streaming across the grassy delta and the animals coming out to eat and drink. Though they are peaceful and slow, rides at this time of day are still unforgettable. As the sun’s rays pass through the dust kicked up by the horses, the romance of Africa comes to life.

Back at the camp you can kick off your boots and enjoy excellent food and wine. Looking back on your day, you will find that a horseback Safari is as close as you will ever come to answering the call of the wild.

1What does the underlined word “They” refer to?

    A.Flooded waters B.Safari camps

    C.Wildlife journey D.Special rides

2What does the writer find most exciting about a horse safari?

A.Seeing and feeling the real African life.

B.Enjoying good food and wine at the camp.

C.Hunting large animals just as our ancestors did.

D.Being part of the scene and getting close to animals.

3Compared to the morning ride, the evening ride is ________.

    A.wild B.relaxed

    C.fast D.active

4The author introduced the riding experience in the Okavango Delta mainly by________.

A.Following time order B.Following space order

    C.Giving answering questions D.Giving examples

四、短文填空 (共1题,共 5分)
  • 31、Directions: Complete the following passage by using the words in the box. Each word can be used only once. Note that there is one word more than you need.

The view that the spirit of adventure no longer has any scope for its enterprise seems, at first glance, depressingly true. The highest mountains have been scaled; the deepest seas plumbed. Maps today no longer contain huge blanks marked "Unknown Territory", nor do they make random guesses at the shapes of 1 land-masses. All major journeys of exploration to 2 the true shape and nature of the globe have been made in the past. It was left to us to fill in the details with 3 which once would have been considered impossible. The gaps have been 4. What next?

The obvious answer, of course, is that man is now looking upwards into space. Discoveries are being made at such a tremendous rate that even authors of science-fiction are finding it difficult to keep up with them and have to tax their imagination to invent bigger and better space-craft. Satellites sending signals as they swing round our globe have become 5.

Astronauts have successfully landed on the moon and its entire surface has been photographed. The information that satellites may provide fueling stations for manned rockets no longer strikes us as preposterous. If thirty years ago, a scientist has urged that we send messages into outer space in the hope of receiving an answer, he would have been regarded as either irresponsible or mad. Now, anything seems 6.

From dreams like these, we return to earth with a bump. Trips into space are all very well, but they are not for us; we must 7 ourselves with our own, much-traveled world. The earth itself is the training-ground for adventurous spirits, for "adventure" need not mean the seeking out of something new. A person can be called adventurous when he finds out something for himself, and it does not matter how many times the discovery has been made before. No one would say that men who set out now to cross the forbidding Antarctic are less enterprising than their predecessors who tried to do the same thing. The little boy who climbs the small hill that 8 his town, or even he who tries to climbs and fails, has precisely the same spirit that led Hillary to climb Everest. For the bold spirit and inquiring mind, there are inexhaustible possibilities. So long as there are people willing to 9 places that are well-known, there will be those who will, one day, set foot on remote and 10 shores.
