二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 26、   In an ideal world, people would not test medicines on animals. Such experiments are stressful and sometimes painful for animals, and expensive and time-consuming for people. Yet animal experimentation is still needed to help bridge vast gaps in medical knowledge. That is why there are some 50 to 100 million animals used in research around the world each year.

Europe, on the whole, has the world’s most restrictive laws on animal experiments. Even so, its scientists use some 12 million animals a year, most of them mice and rats, for medical research. Official statistics show that just 1.1 million animals are used in research in America each year. But that is misleading. The American authorities do not think mice and rats are worth counting and, as these are the most common laboratory animals, the true figure is much higher. Japan and China have even less comprehensive data than America.

Now Europe is reforming the rules governing animal experiments by restricting the number of animals used in labs. Alternatives to animal testing, such as using human tissue or computer models, are now strongly recommended. In addition, sharing all research results freely should help to reduce the number of animals for scientific use. At present, scientists often share only the results of successful experiments. If their findings do not fit the hypothesis being tested, the work never sees the light of day. This practice means wasting time, money, and animals’ lives in endlessly repeating the failed experiments.

Animal experimentation has taught humanity a great deal and saved countless lives. It needs to continue, even if that means animals sometimes suffer. Europe’s new measures should eventually both reduce the number of animals used in experiments and improve the way in which scientific research is conducted.

1What is the main idea of this passage?

A.The success of animal experiments should be ensured.

B.A ban on the use of animals in the lab should be enforced.

C.Greater efforts need to be taken to reduce the number of lab animals.

D.Scientists should be required to share their research results with each other.

2Which of the following statements is TRUE about animals used in the lab?

A.America uses only about 1.1 million lab animals per year.

B.Europe does not use mice and rats as lab animals at all.

C.Britain does not use as many lab animals as China does.

D.Japan has limited data on the number of lab animals used each year.

3Which of the following is mentioned as an alternative to replace animal experiments?

    A.Statistical studies.

    B.Computer models.

    C.DNA planted in animals.

    D.Tissue from dead animals.

4What usually happens to unsuccessful animal experiments?

A.They are not revealed to the public.

B.They are made into teaching materials.

C.They are collected for future publication.

D.They are not removed from the research topic list.

  • 28、Stages of Hurricane: Simple Storms Grow Into Giants

A storm progresses through four different stages before it is actually considered a hurricane. First is a tropical disturbance (热带扰动), which has thunderstorms and rotating (旋转) winds. Next is a tropical depression (热带低气压), which is similar to a tropical disturbance, but has winds between 23 and 39 miles per hour. A tropical storm is the next level, which has stronger wind speeds between 40and 73 miles per hour. Once winds reach 74 miles per hour the storm is officially called a hurricane. The wind picks up energy from the warm surface ocean water.

As a hurricane crosses over land, it begins to become weaker or break apart and reduce in strength. This is because it is no longer over the warm ocean water that it needs for energy. At this point, a hurricane can still cause a lot of damage because of high winds, rain, and flooding. But unless it makes its way back over the open ocean, it is downgraded from a hurricane back to a tropical storm.

    What’s Your Name, Hurricane?

Hurricanes and tropical storms are given names to help people recognize them. Scientists refer to hurricanes and storms by name as they track them across the ocean.

Before 1953, hurricanes were not given official names. From 1953 through 1978, hurricanes were only given female names, like Isabel, Camille, Claudette, and Wilma. Beginning in 1979, hurricanes were given the names of both women and men. Today, the names alternate male and female, and they are named in order of letters.

For example, in 2010, storms were named as follows: Alex (male), Bonnie (female), Colin (male), Danielle (female), Earl (male) and so on…

There are six different lists of names that change, so the same names are used every six years. The only way that a new name is added is when a hurricane has been particularly deadly or costly and the name is retired, then replaced with a new one.

【1】Which of the following is the right order of stages of a hurricane?

A.Tropical depression, tropical disturbance, tropical storm, hurricane

B.Tropical disturbance, tropical depression, tropical storm, hurricane

C.Tropical storm, tropical depression, tropical disturbance, hurricane

D.Tropical storm, tropical disturbance, tropical depression, hurricane

【2】What happens when a hurricane crosses over land?

A.It breaks apart and forms tornadoes.

B.It returns to the ocean afterwards.

    C.It moves more quickly.

    D.It becomes less powerful.

【3】The underlined word “alternate” in paragraph 4 means “____”.

    A.take turns between

    B.carry or

    C.come from

    D.cause trouble to

【4】What do we know about the hurricanes?

A.Six common hurricane names are often used.

B.An old name will be replaced every year.

C.Most of them are deadly and costly.

    D.They didn’t have official names until 1953.

  • 29、   Picking pineapples can be hard, heavy work often with little reward. The price paid for each individual fruit is a small part of a penny.

The leaves from pineapple plants are usually thrown away. A use for them has now been found, turning the leaves into fabric, which provides some extra income for workers.

“I think everybody is quite surprised that the fabric is made of pineapple, because it doesn’t smell like pineapple, it’s not spiky, it’s got a nice texture( 质地) to it. So it’s quite an unusual thing to be working with. ” said Ben Patton, designer for Material Products.

To make the fabric, fibers are extracted(提取) from the leaves. These get sent from the Philippines to Spain.

Once there, machinists complete the process of turning them into a material which has been named ‘Pinatex’.

An online shop based in Cambridge has begun using Pinatex to create handbags, satchels and purses.

And these are the finished bags. If you want one, they’ll charge you around 137 pounds. The texture is slightly crinkled – not too different to some leathers.

As manufacturers become more confident using the material, it’s hoped that more items will be made out of it in the future, making use of pineapple leaves that were otherwise destined to be wasted.

1What is the function of the first paragraph?

A.Giving the main idea. B.Bringing in the topic.

C.Raising the problem. D.Introducing the background.

2Why are Ben Patton’s words quoted here?

A.To show that the pineapple is a useful fruit.

B.To show that pineapple leaves are comfortable to feel.

C.To show that the new material is surprisingly good.

D.To show that the product is profitable.

3What does the underlined word “fabric” in the fourth paragraph mean?

    A.Cloth. B.Leather. C.Bag. D.Money.

4What is the writer’s attitude towards this use of pineapple leaves?

    A.Favorable. B.Negative. C.Concerned. D.Doubtful.
