二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 26、When you think of Chinese food in the US, fried rice, or General Tso’s chicken may first come to mind. But a new museum exhibition in New York City is trying to expand visitors’ palates (味蕾). It features stories of famous cooks like Martin Yan and home cooks whose food represents 18 different regional cooking styles of China.

“I think it’s unfair to just classify Chinese cooking as one,” says Kian Lam Kho, an organizer of “Sour, Sweet, Bitter, Spicy: Stories of Chinese Food and Identity in America” at the Museum of Chinese in America. “Even with the same dish or same cuisine, every family has a different variation.” That’s why the organizers say if you want to taste the full range of Chinese cuisine in the US, you’ll need to go beyond restaurants and into home kitchens, which can play a central role in many immigrants’ lives.

“The kitchen itself is kind of a comfort when you come to a new country. That’s the one place where you set up as your home base, and you cook things that you remember from your past,” explains Audra Ang, another organizer.

One of the home cooks showcased in the exhibition is Ni Biying, 80, of Manhattan. She worked as a live-in babysitter for years before she could finally afford to rent a home with her own kitchen. These days, you can usually find her moving around her one-bedroom apartment as a sweet smell of vinegar and rice wine floats from her stove. For Ni, a small dinner for friends and family means preparing almost a dozen different dishes. She learned some of her techniques from her father, who made most of her family’s meals when she was a child. “I still miss the beef with stir-fried celery my father used to cook,” she says. And it’s the kind of comfort food that defines Chinese food for Ni.

【1】What is the new museum exhibition mainly about?

    A.Cuisine of different countries.

    B.Exploration of famous restaurants.

    C.History of Chinese immigration.

D.Stories of Chinese food and cooks.

【2】Why does the kitchen play a key role in many immigrants’ lives?

    A.It provides a wealthy life.

B.It brings a sense of belonging.

C.It helps them to accept new cultures.

D.It enables them to forget the past.

【3】What can we learn about Ni Biying from Paragraph 4?

A.She worked in a Chinese restaurant.

B.She made most meals as a child.

C.She learned cooking from her father.

D.She lives with a big family.

【4】What can be a suitable title for the text?

    A.Cuisine Gains New Variations

B.Home Cooking Brings More to the Table

C.Immigrants Seek Their Fortune in the US

    D.Chinese Restaurant Tells Immigrant Tales

  • 27、The Silk Road is arguably the most famous long-distance trade route of the ancient world. This passage connected Europe in the West with China in the East, and allowed the exchange of goods, technology, and ideas between the two civilizations. Although merchants could make huge profits travelling the road, it was not without risk.

The main Silk Road started in Chang’an (known today as Xi’an), the early Han capital. Travelers commencing their journey from this city could take a northern route that would take them across China’s northwestern provinces. After this, they would face the Gobi Desert, arguably the greatest danger of the Silk Road.

The Gobi Desert, the largest desert in Asia, consists mainly of rocky, hard earth. This feature made it easier for traders to travel across, compared to sandy deserts like the neighboring Taklamakan Desert. Like other deserts, the Gobi Desert is dry and hot, and therefore the biggest challenge travelers faced was obtaining enough water for themselves as well as for their camels.

So, rest stops were created along the route, allowing travelers to rest, eat and drink. These places also promoted the exchange of goods, and even ideas, amongst the travelers who stopped there. Usually, the rest stops were placed within a day’s journey of each other. In this way, travelers could avoid spending too much time in the desert, which would make them targets for robbers, another danger of the Silk Road.

Once through the Gobi Desert, travelers would continue their journey into Iran, Turkey, and finally Europe. While this part of the journey may have been less dangerous, it is not entirely without its perils (风险).

【1】The underlined word “it” in the first paragraph refers to _________.

    A.making huge profits

    B.traveling the Silk Road

    C.exchanging goods and ideas

    D.connecting different civilizations

【2】Why was the Gobi Desert easier to cross than other deserts?

A.The desert’s surface was easier to walk on.

B.Camels for transportation were easier to find.

C.It was smaller and could be crossed in less time.

D.There were more natural water sources available.

【3】What can we guess about the rest stops in the Gobi Desert?

    A.Travelers were offered free accommodation.

B.They were located around the edges of the desert.

C.They were shared by travelers from different countries.

D.Exchanging goods and ideas there was entirely without risk.

【4】What is the passage mainly about?

A.The origins of the Silk Road.

B.The benefits of the Silk Road.

C.The difficulties faced by Silk Road travelers.

D.The cultural exchanges among Silk Road travelers.

    This Way to Dreamland

Daydreaming means people think about something pleasant, especially when this makes them forget what they should be doing. 【1】 They can seem forgetful and clumsy. They stare off into space and wander by themselves. They annoy us because they seem to be ignoring us and missing the important things.

But daydreamers are also responsible for some of the greatest ideas and achievements in human history. 【2】 Can you imagine what kind of world we would have without such ideas and inventions?

So how can you come up with brilliant daydreams and avoid falling over tree roots or otherwise looking like a fool?

First, understand that some opportunities for daydreaming are better than others. Feeling safe and relaxed will help you to slip into daydreams. 【3】 And if you want to improve your chances of having a creative idea while you’re daydreaming, try to do it while you are involved in another task—preferably something simple, like taking a shower or walking, or even making meaningless drawings.

It’s also important to know how to avoid daydreams for those times when you really need to concentrate. “Mindfulness”, being focused, is a tool that some people use to avoid falling asleep. 【4】

Finally, you never know what wonderful idea might strike while your mind has moved slowly away. Therefore, it’s a good idea to keep a notebook or voice recorder nearby when you are in the daydream zone.

Always remember that your best ideas might come when your head is actually in the clouds.

A.Having interesting things to think about also helps.

B.Without wandering minds, we wouldn’t have relativity or Post-it notes.

C.At one time, daydreaming was thought to be a cause of some mental illnesses.

D.Daydreamers have a bad reputation for being unaware of what’s happening around them.

E.It involves slow, steady breathing for self-control that helps people stay calm.

F.Daydreams are often very simple and direct, quite unlike sleep dreams, which may be hard to understand

  • 29、   Are you interested in higher education in the United States? The following advice might help you.

    ● College, University or Institute

College and universities offer undergraduate degrees in arts and sciences. And both can help prepare young people to earn a living. But many colleges don't offer graduate studies. Universities are generally bigger, offer more programs and do more research. An institute of technology can offer a wide choice of programs and activities. Seventy-five percent of freshmen go there with a strong interest and involvement in the arts.

    ● The Application Process

International admissions officers advise students to apply to at least three schools. You may be able to apply online and pay the application charge with a credit card, or by mail. You should study the websites of schools to find information about how and when to apply, how much it will cost and whether any financial aid is available.

    ● Get a Student Card

If you request a visa for the first time, you will have to go to an American embassy or consulate(领事馆). You will need to bring a government form sent to you by your American school that shows you have been accepted. A consular official will also take your picture and your fingerprints. You will also need banking and tax records that show you have enough money to pay for your education.

    ● Financial Aid

American schools provide aid, like scholarships, fellowships, to almost half of foreign graduate students, but only ten percent of undergraduates. But grants, which, unlike a loan, does not have to be paid.

1It can be inferred from the passage that American colleges and universities .

    A. have their own origins in institutes of technology

    B. have both similarities and differences
