27、 Kids in primary schools in Bellaire, Ohio, have something to sing about. For the past eight years, public primary schools in that town didn’t offer music classes. They didn’t have the money to pay for them. But the school district got some support to bring back music this school year.
Many school officials across the country say music classes get students excited about going to school. And studies have shown that music classes may boost brainpower. For example, researchers from the University of Southern California recently released the results of a fiveyear study. They found that the brains of 10and 11yearolds who learned to play a musical instrument developed faster than the brains of kids who didn’t.
Though most people aren’t against teaching music in schools, not everyone says it’s necessary. Many school officials argue (争论) that learning music means less time spent on maths, writing, and science, all of which may be more useful to students later in life.
Here’s what two of our readers think.
Music should be taught in school for the simple reason that it makes learning more fun. We have music classes at my school, and I love them!
Taking music lessons can also build character. In 2015, a research company called Grunwald Associates did a survey on music education. More than 60 percent of parents whose kids took music classes in school said their child became more focused (集中注意力的).
—Noah Falcon, New Jersey
At my school, we don’t have music classes. I think that’s OK because it gives us more time to focus on main subjects, like reading and maths. It’s more important to learn these subjects than it is to learn how to play an instrument or sing.
If someone wants to take music lessons, he or she can do it outside of school. Once I took a mariachi (墨西哥流浪乐队音乐) class after school, so it didn’t take time away from my other classes.

28、Beat the Burglar
Don’t invite crime -- take basic, sensible precautions (预防). Your house and possession are valuable and must be properly protected. When you buy a lock, you buy time. The best prevention is delay and noise which could mean discovery.
When you leave it- lock it! First of all, fit security locks to all doors and windows and a safety chain on the front door. Secondly, use them! If you have any ladders or tools, don’t leave them lying about in the garden, lock them away. “Safe”or “secret” places for keys and valuables are not reliable -- nine times out of ten. they are the first place a thief will look. | When you move house… When you move into a new home even if it is fitted with security locks, change them. You don’t know who else may have keys. Never let strangers into your house. An official-looking cap is not enough, ask for proof of identity and look at it carefully -- if you are still not satisfied, don’t let the person in. |
Valuables need special protection Valuables should really be given special protection- preferably by leaving them with your bank. A small security safe works too, but not to the most determined burglar. It is also important to keep an up-to-date list of valuables and their descriptions. In the case of fine art paintings, or jewelry, color photographs can sometimes be of assistance to the police if you are unfortunate enough to have them stolen. Enter the details on the back of the pictures. But don’t keep such documents in your house, keep them at the bank or with your insurance company. | Going on holiday? Don’t talk about your holidays and future plans loudly in public. Do remember to cancel the milk and newspapers and also to draw curtains back. Operate a “Good Neighbor” program to ensure that mail is taken in, the house is checked regularly and that lights are put on. Call at your local police station and tell them you are going away. Make sure that they know how to contact you in case of trouble Don’ t leave cash or valuables in the house -- take them with you or put them in the bank. |
【1】Which is the safest way to protect your valuables?
A.Putting your valuables in your safe.
B.Giving a list of your valuables to the police.
C.Taking pictures of your valuables.
D.Keeping your valuables at the bank.
【2】When you are away for holidays, you ________.
A.shouldn’t make it known that your home is empty
B.shouldn’t leave your keys to your neighbors
C.should cancel your mail
D.should ask the police to check your house regularly
【3】What is the purpose of the passage?
A.To inform people of safety standards.
B.To educate people on prevention of burglars.
C.To introduce the advantages of banks.

So what is rewilding?
Imagine our natural homes growing instead of shrinking. Imagine species (物种)diversifying instead of declining. That's rewilding. Rewilding is ecological restoration. Rewilding offers hope for wildlife, humans and the planet.
Why is rewilding important and necessary?
●Our natural ecology is broken. The places where you would expect wildlife to exist have been reduced to wet deserts. The seabed has been destroyed and there have been no livingcreatures any more.
●Our wildlife is disappearing. Many wonderful species have declined over the past century. We've lost more of our large animals than any European country.
●We need keystone species. These vital species, including top predators (食肉动物), drive ecological processes. Their loss has worsened our living systems.
●Nature looks after us. Good natural ecology can provide us with clean air and water, prevent flooding and store carbon. Rewilding can leave the world in a better state than it is today.
What are challenges?
As a long-term project, our “rewilding britain” has its challenges. Many people are notinterested, because we have got used to the lack of native forests. Many farmers oppose the idea. They thought it a crazy idea to bring back predators because they would start killing farmanimals. It takes time to educate them. Above all, we need money! So we need your help!
Make a donation.
Help us bring back living systems and restore wild nature!
With your help we can. . .
●Open up new chances for rewilding and push for change.
●Develop tools to educate, influence and spread the word.
Thanks for your support.

A. To introduce a new project.
B. To call on people to give money.
C. To warn people of the natural ecology.
D. To convince people to change their mind.
