25、”How are you?” is a nice question. It’s a friendly way that people greet each other in the USA. But “How are you?” is also a very unusual question.
It’s a question that often doesn’t have an answer. The person who asks “How are you?” hopes to hear the answer “Fine”, even if the person’s friend isn’t fine. The reason is that “How are you?” isn’t really a question and “Fine” isn’t really an answer. They are simply other ways of saying “Hello” or “Hi”.
Sometimes, people also don’t say exactly what they mean. For example, when someone asks, “Do you agree?” the other person might think, “No, I disagree. I think you’re wrong…” But it isn’t very polite to disagree strongly, so the other person might say, “I’m not sure…”. It’s a nice to say that you don’t agree with someone.
People also don’t say exactly what they are thinking when they finish talking with other people. For example, many talks over the phone finish when one person says “I have to go now.” Often, the person who wants to hang up gives excuses, “Someone is at the door.” “Something is burning on the stove (炉子).” The excuses might be real, or not. Perhaps the person who wants to hang up simply doesn’t want to talk anymore, but it isn’t polite to say that. The excuse is more polite, and it doesn’t hurt the other person.
When people are greeting each other or talking about an idea, they don’t say exactly what they are thinking. It’s an important way that people try to be nice to each other, and it’s also part of the game of language.

26、“What do you usually have for breakfast?” I ask my students and hear the answers:
“I never eat breakfast.”
“I don’t get time to eat.”
“I eat some bread and hurry to school.”
Sometimes I don’t have my breakfast or just get a coffee, so I want to do something for myself and my students. I set up (创建) the Breakfast Club. My idea is to have breakfast with a student every day and know more about them. When I tell my class about my new idea, they are excited. They talk about what food to bring to school and who will get the first invitation (邀请).
The next day, I put an invitation on Nicholas’s desk. He is often late and find it difficult to do his schoolwork. When most of my students talk happily with each other, he is always alone (独自一人).
He doesn’t smile a lot. But when Nicholas sees the invitation, there is a big smile on his face. The next morning, he is my first student to get to school. We sit at my desk and eat a meal of bread and juice. I learn that he has two dogs and he likes sports. He plays soccer with his father on weekends. We both enjoy the breakfast. The next day, I put an invitation on a new desk. I see many benefits as my students have their turn to eat breakfast with me. No one is late for school; they work harder in school; they are happy to talk with me and other teachers.
