四、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 24、Facial expressions are the main way people show their feelings and read the feelings of others. Happiness, sadness, disgust, fear and surprise can be communicated through facial expressions alone. However, because of the novel coronavirus (冠状病毒), people have to wear masks to keep them safe. When people wear masks, it becomes more difficult to read their feelings.

If you cannot read someone else’s feeling, you may have difficulty communicating with them. Wearing a mask can also make you feel more distracted (心烦意乱) and uncomfortable, making your relationship with others worse.

Luckily, you can change this situation by working with what you have left—the eyes. If you want to increase understanding with a person who wears a mask, you should look them in the eyes, which may be easier said than done. Eye contact may make people become uncomfortable after only three seconds. But it can also make you appear smarter and more honest.

You might be surprised how much information is showed by the body itself. For example, when someone is happy, they stand up straighter and lift their head; when they are sad, they drop their head; and when they are angry, their whole body tenses up (紧张). Learning how people use their bodies to show feelings may help you communicate with someone in a mask.

Pay attention to your own body language too. In a conversation, if you turn your body toward the speaker, leaning in (前倾) or nodding, the speaker may think you are listening carefully. To let another person know you want to start speaking, keep your back straight, hold up your index finger (食指) or nod more often.

Don’t forget the effect of your voice. It’s not just what you say, it’s how you say it. For example, a very low voice may mean sadness, while a loud shout could show anger. If you feel the need to speak louder, just be aware that raising your voice can change the message you are trying to send. So instead of speaking louder, try speaking more clearly.

All in all, continue to wear a mask to keep yourself safe, but don’t give up your communication with others.

    【1】Wearing masks can ______.

    A.help people communicate more easily

    B.help people read others’ feelings

C.make people feel relaxed and comfortable

    D.help keep novel coronavirus away

【2】What is NOT true about eye contact according to the passage?

A.Eye contact can help you understand more about a person.

B.Eye contact with only two seconds may make people uncomfortable.

C.Eye contact makes people appear smarter and more honest.

D.Eye contact for too long is not a good idea.

【3】If you want to start talking, you can ______.

A.turn your body toward the speaker

    B.make eye contact

    C.keep your back straight

    D.drop your head

【4】What can we learn from the passage?

A.When someone is angry, his or her body may keep straight.

B.If a person is sad, he or she will speak loudly.

C.Raising your voice may not change the meaning of your words.

D.Speaking clearly in a conversation (谈话) is very important.

    Dear Sigmund Friend,

My brother plays the guitar very well, so my parents signed me up(报名) for guitar too. But I’m just not a guitar girl. What should I do?

    Can’t Hold

    Dear Can’t Hold,

Thank you for your letter. While your parents want you to play the guitar, mine hoped I’d play baseball. You would be amazed at how much my parents love baseball. My dad was the star player on his school team, and they first met in line to buy hot dogs at a baseball game!

Years ago, my parents thought baseball would just be in my blood and I’d be a talented player. Before I could say “Thanks, but no thanks”, they had signed me up and ordered my uniform!

Don’t get me wrong. My training on baseball wasn’t terrible. Our coach was nice and the kids on our team were great. Even though I never became very good at baseball, I did improve by the end of that season. Then something unexpected happened one day. My grandmother took me to the community pool on the way home after the baseball practice. It turned out to be the best time I ever had. I swam happily with a boy called Ben and later we became good friends. Then we decided to join a swimming team.

So I talked to my parents about it that night, and they were surprisingly understanding about my wanting to be on a swimming team. But they said I should finish out that year’s baseball season first.

So dear Can’t Hold, here’s what I think. Your parents possibly think that because your brother is into guitar, you must be into it too. But they won’t know how you feel if you don’t talk to them about it. Why not let them know that guitar doesn’t seem like the right instrument for you, and give another instrument a try? Maybe you can give violin or piano a shot.

    Hope my advice is helpful.

New research strategies(策略) have helped scientists to discover that babies begin life with the ability to learn any languages. By interacting(互动) with other people and by u4their excellent listening and observational skills, they quickly learn the languages they hear most often.

Because babies can't tell scientists what they're hearing, scientists have been using a different method to c 5 if they can tell one sound from another. In some e6for example, scientists play recordings of a sound, such as "eee" over and over on one side of a baby's head. Then, they play another sound such as "aaah," to the baby's o7 side. If the baby turns to the new sound, he will see a dancing toy—a p8that encourages him to respond to such changes. If he doesn't turn, that suggests that he doesn't hear the difference b9 the sounds.
