21、Long long ago, a donkey(驴) fell into a well(井). The animal cried for hours as the farmer tried to think out what to do. Finally, the farmer thought the animal was too old and the well needed to be covered up anyway, so he decided not to save the donkey.
The farmer invited his neighbours to help him. They began to shovel(铲) dirt into the well. The donkey cried harder. But a few minutes later, he became quiet. The farmer looked into the well, and was surprised by what he saw.
While every shovelful of dirt hit his back, the donkey would shake it off and take a step on the new layer of dirt. As the farmer’s neighbours continued to shovel dirt on top of the animal, the donkey would shake it off and take another step up. Soon the donkey stepped up out of the well and ran away, to the surprise of all the neighbours.
The lesson we get from this story is that if life shovels some dirt on us, we must get out the well and not let it cover us. We must learn to shake it off and take a step up. Each of our troubles is a stepping-stone(踏脚石). We can get out of the deepest well by never giving up!

“I've never seen a diamond ring in the wallet,” said the dustman.
They began to quarrel. The businessman didn’t do what he had said. The dustman became angry and took him before a judge (法官).
After the judge heard what had happened to them, he said to the businessman, “I'm sure you are an honest man. It's true that you have lost a wallet in which there was a diamond ring. But it's also clear that there is only a lot of money in this wallet. I don't think it's yours. Wait for some time. Perhaps someone will be able to return your wallet to you!”

23、 I arrived in the classroom, ready to share my knowledge and experience with 76 students who would be my English literature(文学) class. Having taught in the US for 17 years, I was sure of my ability to hold their attention and I was confident that they would admire(钦佩) my ability to teach them literature well in English.
I was shocked when the monitor shouted, “stand up!” The whole class rose as I entered the room and I was somewhat unclear about how to get them to sit down again, but once the embarrassment(尴尬) was over, I quickly gained my calmness and admiration again. I went back, to my office with the rosy glow which came from a strong sense of achievement(成就).
My students kept diaries. However, as I read them, the rosy glow was slowly replaced(取代) by a strong sense of sadness. The first diary said, “Our literature teacher didn’t teach us anything today perhaps her next lecture(讲座) will be better.” Greatly surprised, I read diary after diary, each saying something about a similar theme. “Didn’t I teach them anything? I described the whole Western philosophy(哲学) and laid the historical background for all the works we will study in class,” I complained. “How should they say I didn’t teach them anything?”
It was a long term, and it slowly became clear that my ideas about education were not the same as those of my students. I thought a teacher’s job was to raise interesting questions and provide enough background so that students could draw their own conclusions. My students thought a teacher’s job was to provide exact information as directly and clearly as possible. What a difference!
However, I also learned a lot; and the experience with my Chinese students has made me a better American teacher, and I knew how to teach in a different culture.
